  • This paper aims to empirically study how service trade regulations and FTAs have affected trade in services of Korea, China, and Japan (KCJ). We estimate the gravity equation using the OECD Services Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI), the Heterogeneity Index, and service trade data of KCJ and their main trade partners from 2003- 2010. The analysis revealed that the more restrictive regulations measured by the STRI are negatively associated with the services trade of Korea and Japan. In addition, Korean FTAs have had a significantly positive effect on service trade. Further empirical results showed that FTAs with a longer implementation period had a greater effect on services trade.

  • This study raised the necessity of developing performance indicators for measuring the management efficiency and effectiveness of school food service, and as a means of helping its implementation, a balanced score card (BSC) approach developed by Norton and Kaplan was adopted. This study established BSC in seven phases through literature: Phase 1 Defining a school food service and the scope of working activities, Phase 2 Establishing the vision of a school food service, Phase 3 Setting strategic goals, Phase 4 Identifying critical success factors (CSFs), Phase 5 Developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Phase 6 Extracting cause and effect relationship, and Phase 7 Completing a preliminary BSC. The preliminary BSC was fumed into a survey, which was administered to food service related people working at the Office of Education and School Food Service including 16 offices,209 dietitians, 48 school administrators both from self-operated and contract-managed, and 9 experts in areas related to school food service. They were asked questions about strategies from 4 different perspectives,12 CSFs, 39 KPls, and the cause and effect relationships among them. As a result, among the CSFs based on 4 different perspectives, all factors other than ' zero sum on profit/loss ' from the financial perspective turned out to be valid. In terms of KPIs, manufacturing cost percentages, casualty loss count/reduction rates, school foodervice participation rates, and sales goal achievement rates were found to be valid from the financial perspective, while student satisfaction index, faculty satisfaction index, leftover ratio, nutrition educational performance count, index of evaluating nutrition education, customer claim count/reduction rate, handling customer claim count/reduction rate, and parent satisfaction index were found to be valid from the customers' perspective. Besides, nutritional requirement sufficient ratio, nutritional management score, food poisoning outbreak count, employee safety accident count, sanitary inspection assessment index, meals per labor hour (productivity index), computerization ratio, operational management index, and purchase management assessment index were also found to be valid from the perspective of internal business processes. From the perspective of innovation and learning, employee turnover ratio/rate of absenteeism, annual education and training count, employee satisfaction index, human resource management assessment index, annual menu-related customer feedback, food service information index for employees and parents/schools were also found to be valid. The significance of this study is to present indices for measuring overall performance of school lunch food service operations without putting any limitation on types of school food service management, and to help correctly assess the contribution of the current types of school food service management to schools and students. • We present new methods for an efficient retrieval of SGML documents. We define IDDL (index database description language) which is able to describe various information such as meta data, an indexing range, and the creation and manipulation of a database. In addition, we design IDQL (index database query language) that can deal with querying meta data as well as logical structure. Especially, the retrieval system based on IDDL and IDQL has been developed and implemented, and has been experimented on large number of documents. Experimental result shows that the proposed method provides the dynamic creation of an index database and a convenient retrieval environment.

  • In this paper, we propose a new dynamic spatial index structure, called PR -file, for handling spatial objects and the modified hierarchical variance which measures the degree of spatial locality at each level. Under the assumption that a multidimensional search space has a circular domain, PR-file uses the modified hierarchical variance for clustering spatially adjacent objects. The insertion and splitting algorithms of PR_file preserve and index which has a low hierarchical variance regardless of object distributions. The simulation result shows that PR- file has a high hit ratio during a retrieval of objects by using an index with low hierarchical variance. And it shows a characteristic that the larger the bucket capacity, the higher the bucket utilization.

  • The Korean e-Navigation system is a Korean approach to correspond with implementation of IMO e-Navigation. It provides five services, among them SV20 service, a ship remote monitoring system that collects and processes sensor information related to fire, navigation, and seakeeping performance safety. The system also detects abnormal conditions such as fires, capsizing, sinking, navigation equipment failure during navigation, and calculates the safety index and determines the emergency level. According to emergency level, it provides appropriate emergency response guidance for the onboard operator. The fire safety module is composed of three sub-modules; each module is the safety index sub-module, the emergency level determination sub-module and emergency response guidance sub-module. In this study, operational concept of the fire safety module in SV20 service is explained, and fire safety assessment factors are estimated, to calculate the fire safety index. Fire assessment factors included 'Fire detector position factor,' 'Smoke diffusion rate factor,' and 'Fire-fighting facilities factor.'

  • Hand-held devices such as smart phones exploit flash memory based storages to store data for processing jobs. Since the flash memory, non-volatile memory, is able to store mass data, it is required to use the index for processing queries. However, the flash memory has the shortcomings that it does not support the overwrite operation and its write operation is very slow. In this paper, we build the fixed grid file, one of the multi-dimensional spatial index, on a flash memory and evaluate the performance test.

  • In this paper, a novel platform for chemical sensing and biosensing is presented. The working principle is based on the coupling efficiency and interference properties of optical directional coupler (DC) and multimode interference coupler (MMIC). It has been realized using planar technology to allow integration on a silicon substrate. Firstly, the dispersion curves of DC and MMIC is described, and the design specification of an optimized slot optical waveguide to increase waveguide sensitivity is selected. Next, the sensor response to the refractive index change of sensing analyte is numerically simulated. The numerical results reveal that high effective index change per refractive index unit (RIU) change of analyte is obtained, and the sensitivity can be tuned using the DC and MMIC design technique.

  • The main memory DBMS(MMDBMS) efficiently supports various database applications that require high performance since it employs main memory rather than disk as a primary storage. In this paper, we discuss theexperiences obtained in developing the index manager of the Tachyon, a next-generation MMDBMS. The indexmanager is an essential sub-component of the DBMS used to speed up the retrieval of objects from a largevolume of a database in response to a certain search condition. Previous research efforts on indexing proposed various index structures. However, they hardly dealt with the practical issues occured in implementating an index manager on a target DBMS. In this paper, we touch these issues and present our experiences in developing the index manager on the Tachyon as solutions. The main issues touched are (1) compact representation of an indexentry, (2) support of variable-length keys, (3) support of multiple-attribute keys, (4) support of duplicated keys,(5) definition of external APls, (6) concurrency control, and (7) backup and recovery. We believe that ourcontribution would help MMDBMS developers highly reduce their trial-and-errors.

  • Flash SSDs have many advantages over the existing hard disks such as energy efficiency, shock resistance, and high I/O throughput. For these reasons, in combination with the emergence of innovative technologies such as 3D-NAND and V-NAND for cheaper cost-per-byte, flash SSDs have been rapidly replacing hard disks in many areas. However, the existing database engines, which have been developed mainly assuming hard disks as the storage, could not fully exploit the characteristics of flash SSDs (e.g. internal parallelism). In this paper, in order to utilize the internal parallelism intrinsic to modern flash SSDs for faster query processing, we implemented a prefetching method using asynchronous input/output as a new functionality for secondary index scans in MySQL InnoDB engine. Compared to the original InnoDB engine, the proposed prefetching-based scan scheme shows three-fold higher performance in the case of 16KB-page sizes, and about 4.2-fold higher performance in the case of 4KB-page sizes.
