Two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter, and initial crossflow passes between the plates. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10 mm, and the Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effect of crossflow, the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.2 to 2 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. With the initial crossflow, the heat/mass transfer rates on the effusion (target) plate decrease as the velocity of crossflow increases, since the crossflow induces the locally low transfer regions formed at the mid-way between the effusion holes. However, the impingement/effusion cooling with crossflow presents higher heat/mass transfer rates than the array jet impingement cooling with the same initial crossflow.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of fin and tube heat exchanger. The existing transient and steady methods are very difficult to apply for the measurements of heat transfer coefficients of a thin heat transfer model. In this study the lumped capacitance method was adopted. The heat transfer coefficients were measured by using the lumped capacitance method based on the liquid crystal thermography. The method is validated through impinging jet and flat plate flow experiments. The two experiments showed that the results of the lumped capacitance method with polycarbonate model showed very good agreements with those of the transient method with acryl model. The lumped capacitance method showed similar results regardless of the thickness of polycarbonate model. The method was also applied for the heat transfer coefficient measurements of a fin and tube heat exchanger. The quantitative heat transfer coefficients of the plate fin were successfully obtained. As the frontal velocity increased, the heat transfer coefficients were increased, but the color-band shape showed similar patterns regardless of frontal velocity.

Rocket Plumes can cause serious damage to launch vehicles and adjacent structures. This paper describes the impact of an adjacent structure by a rocket plume. Each parameter related with dynamic behavior of a missile is modeled with probabilistic distributions of variables. Flyout analyses of initial behavior of a vertically launched missile are performed using Monte-Carlo simulation and flow-motion analyses were conducted by using CFD. In this way, when a missile is fired by a ship, the impact of an adjacent structure by a rocket plume was analyzed.
Simultaneous PIV and OH PLIF measurements are used for shear strain rates and flame locations, respectively. It is believed that the shear strain rates represent flow characteristics such as turbulence intensity and the OH intensity indicates the flame characteristics such as burning velocities. However, these are still lack of geometric information, which may be very important to flame quenching Hence, fractal dimensions 'Df) of the OH images are adopted as an additional information. Finally, the flame structure diagram proposed in this research has three parameters, which consist of strain rates, OH intensities and fractal dimensions. The results show that this diagram classifies turbulent premixed flames more effectively based on flame structures. The regime of weak turbulence is limited to narrow strain ranges and has the fractal dimension of about 2 In the regime of moderate turbulence, OH intensities increase as strain rates increase and the values of fractal dimensions are 1.8 Df 1.95. The regimes of thickened reaction and flame extinction (quenching) show bell-shaped and their values of fractal dimensions are 1.5 Df 1.7 and 0.9 Df 0.6, respectively.
Axisymmetric circular water jet impinges against rectangular heated surface with uniform hear flux and wire-mesh screens are set up in the nozzle-to-heater space to augment heat transfer. In the free jet region to be used them, pressure drop and intensive turbulence flow was brought up. When water jet system is not used wire-mesh screens, maximum heat transfer appears in the stagnation point and the secondary maximum appears X/D=4 but it disappears when they are is used. In the low velocity(Vo<6.0m/s), coarse mesh-screen enhanced heat transfer but fine mesh-screens inpeded heat transfer. In the high velocity(Vo>6m/s), all of them enhanced heat transfer. Average Nusselt number of experimental system to be used wire-mesh screens was promoted $4{\sim}6$times than that of simple water jet system. The stagnation heat transfer of experimental system to be used wire-mesh screens was augmented 6times that of simple water jet system.
An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper we present a two-dimensional edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. We use a new lattice BGK compressible fluid model that has an additional term and allow larger time increment comparing a conventional FDLB model, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}=23^{\circ}$ . At a stand-off distance ${\omega}$ , the edge is inserted along the centreline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency f is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and to propagate towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations result from periodically oscillation of jet around the edge. That pressure fluctuations propagate with the sound speed. Its interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.

This study investigates the behavior of a plunging wave and its associated runup and overtopping through velocity measurements and suggests an empirical formula for overtopping velocities on a structure. The plunging wave breaking in front of the structure generates very bubbly flow fields. For measurements of the two phase flow field of the breaking wave, particle image velocimetry and a modified optical method were employed. The obtained velocity fields were discussed in respect of the process of wave impinging, runup and overtopping. The overtopping velocity distribution is found to have a nonlinear profile showing a maximum magnitude at its front part. The relationship of self-similarity among dimensionless parameters is observed and used to obtain the regression formula to depict the overtopping velocity.

Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction steam line- inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data on effect of geometry of the impingement baffle plate on the shell wall thinning. Additionally, a new type impingement baffle plate was installed above the impingement baffle plate in the feedwater heater and then the numerical and experimental study were performed in the same progress.
Thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for numerous structural failures around the world. The wind characteristics in thunderstorm downbursts containing vortex rings differ with those in 'traditional' boundary layer winds (BLW). This paper initially performs an unsteady-state simulation of the flow structure in a downburst (modelled as a impinging jet with its diameter being $D_{jet}$) using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, and then analyses the pressure distribution on a solar updraft tower (SUT) in the downburst. The pressure field shows agreement with other previous studies. An additional pair of low-pressure region and high-pressure region is observed due to a second vortex ring, besides a foregoing pair caused by a primary vortex ring. The evolutions of pressure coefficients at five orientations of two representative heights of the SUT in the downburst with time are investigated. Results show that pressure distribution changes over a wide range when the vortices are close to the SUT. Furthermore, the fluctuations of external static pressure distribution for the SUT case 1 (i.e., radial distance from a location to jet center x=$D_{jet}$) with height are more intense due to the down striking of the vortex flow compared to those for the SUT case 2 (x=$2D_{jet}$). The static wind loads at heights z/H higher than 0.3 will be negligible when the vortex ring is far away from the SUT. The inverted wind load cases will occur when vortex is passing through the SUT except on the side faces. This can induce complex dynamic response of the SUT.
In the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is well known that the gas wiping through an air knife system is most effective because of its uniformity in coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, workability in high speed, and simplicity of control. However, gas wiping used in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing at the strip edge above a certain high speed of process. It is also known that the problem of edge splashing is more harmful than that at the mid strip surface. For a given liquid(of a certain viscosity and surface tension), the onset of splashing mainly depends upon the strip velocity, the gas-jet pressure, and the nozzle's stand-off distance. In these connections in the present study, we proposed three kinds of air knife system having nozzles of constant expansion rate, and compared the jet structures issuing from newly proposed nozzle systems with the result by a conventional one. In numerical analysis, the governing equations are consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is employed to solve turbulence stress and so on. As the result, it is found that we had better use the constant expansion-rate nozzle which can be interpreted from the point view of the energy saving for the same coating thickness. Also, we better reduce the size of separation bubble and enhance the cutting ability at the strip surface, by using an air-knife having constant expansion-rate nozzle.
