  • In this study, the velocity characteristics of liquid elements formed by two impinging jets is analysed using double pulse image capturing technique. For the droplets formed by low speed impinging jets, the droplet velocities are higher with smaller azimuthal and impingement angle. The maximum droplet velocities are about 25 % lower than jet velocity. With an increase of azimuthal angle, the shedding angles increases but remains lower than azimuthal angle. The velocities of ligaments formed by high speed impinging jets gradually decreases with an increase of azimuthal angle. The maximum ligament velocities are about 40% lower than jet velocity. Higher impingement angles produce lower ligament velocities. The shedding angles of ligament almost increases with the same value of azimuthal angle, which implies that the moving direction of ligaments is radial from the origin as the impingement point.

  • In high-pressure diesel engine, the injected fuel spray impinges on the piston cavity surface due to the short distance between the injection nozzle and the cavity wall. The behavior of the impinging spray has the great influence on the dispersion of fuel, the evaporation, and the mixture formation process. In this study, the numerical simulation using the GTT code was performed to study the gas flows, the spray behaviors, and the fuel vapor distributions in the combustion of a D.I engine for variation of spray angle and swirl ratio.

  • Impinging spray characteristics were investigated to find suitable injection pressure by using high pressure injection system. Spray radius and spray height were increased continuously until 2,500bar but the rate of enhancement was decreased suddenly over this injection pressure region. It is expected that the maximum suitable injection pressure of impinging spray exists at around 2,500bar.

  • The fuel spray behavior in the intake port of an electronic control port irijection gasoline engine has a strong influence on engine performance, exhaust emission and fuel consumption. Thus, in this study, fuel spray behavior and flow characteristics of the air assist gasoline spray injected into a suction flow in a simulated rectangular intake port have boon investigated. Macro-behavior of spray characteristics was investigated by means of visualization and the measurements of SMD and velocity were made by PDPA. For analysis the flow field with droplets size, droplets are classified five droplets size groups. As a result, the normal distance of suction flow increasing, the relatively large droplets distribution and SMD increase because small droplets easily follow suction flow. Near impinging wail, after impinging against the wall, secondary atomized small droplets of D < $30{\mu}m$ bound from the wall. And the increasement of suction flow progress to the large droplets of D > $100{\mu}m$ distribution. Therefore, SMD are apparently increased near impinging wall, Z/d = 9.0.

  • Investigation on the fuel adhering on a wall was carried out experimentally to clarify the characteristics of impinging diesel sprays. Diesel sprays were injected into a high-pressure chamber of cold state and impinged to a wall having various impingement distances and ambient pressures. Photographs of both the fuel film and the post-impingement spray were taken through a transparent wall. Adhered fuel mass on a wall was measured by means of dividing into two types of fuel state: the fuel film itself; and sparsely adhered fuel droplets. Adhering fuel ratio was predicted and further the distribution of fuel mass for impinging diesel spray was analyzed as a function of time. As result, with an increase of the ambient pressure, both the maximum fuel film diameter and the adhered fuel ratio decreased. Based on some assumptions, the adhering fuel mass increased rapidly until the fuel film diameter approached the maximum value, and then increased comparatively gradually.

  • A modified spray impingement model has been developed, which is assessed against experiments for the impinging sprays on the small combustion chamber at various gas pressures. To investigate spray behaviors in the diesel combustion chamber, a transparent constant-volume chamber is made which is similar to the combustion chamber of the real diesel engine. The chamber is pressurized by N2 gas from 0 bar to 20 bar to find the effects of ambient pressures. The behaviors of spray injected into this chamber and dispersed after impingement on the cylinder wall is measured two-dimensionally using laser sheet Mie scattering method. The physical submodels have been properly modified to improve the prediction capability of original KIVA code to describe the spray behaviors after impingement on the curved cylinder wall. In terms of spray dynamics and evolution. numerical results give qualitatively good agreements with experimental data.

  • The objective of this study is to establish geometric guidelines for design of impaction parts prepared for removing undesirable effects of fuel deposition on a wall in small direct-injection diesel engines. In order to get the guidelines a new wall geometry is introduced and assessed, which has a flat top and a slant edge. The size of the flat top and the angle of the slant edge are varied and tested in same chamber condition, then their effects on spray dispersions and drop sizes are discussed. The results show that the case of 3.0mm flat top and $60^{\circ}$ edge angle gives the best spray characteristics for a small combustion chamber in the test conditions chosen in this paper.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out to examine the influence of injector design variables and operating conditions on the resultant drop size for triplet impinging streams injectors. The variables studied in this investigation are pressure drop, impinging angle, orifice length to diameter ratio, and impinging point distance. Droplet-size data are obtained using water as the propellant simulant by Malvern Particle Analyzer System. Drop size decreases with increasing impinging angle and pressure drop while other injector parameters remain constant at the same point. But it is found that there is no noticeable droplet-size change which results from change in orifice length to diameter ratio or impinging point distance within the investigated range.

  • In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by a low speed impinging jet onto a flat plate was measured by the direct contact method. The spatial distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness in the radial and circumferential directions, and the effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity were analyzed. The measurement results were compared with the theoretical predictions. The wavy surface was observed in the case of low viscosity water, but not in the high viscosity aqueous glycerol solutions. The sheet thickness increased as the circumferential angle increased or the distance from the impinging point increased, but the thickness decreased as the circumferential angle increased around the impinging point. As the jet speed increased, the sheet thickness decreased, and the sheet thickness increased as the liquid viscosity increased. Comparison with the theoretical predictions showed that the measurement results agreed well in the case of low viscosity water or high viscosity liquids around the impinging point. The distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness can provide useful means for prediction of spray characteristics in splash plate injectors.
