  • The water jet impingement cooling with boiling is one of the techniques to remove heat from high heat flux equipments. The configuration of surface roughness is one obvious condition of affecting the performance on heat transfer in nucleate boiling, The present study investigates the water jet impinging single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer for the effect of surface roughness to enhance the heat transfer in free surface and submerged jet. The distributions of the averaged wall temperature as well as the boiling curves are discussed. Jet velocities are varied from 0.65 to 1.7 m/s. Surface roughness by sand blast and sand paper varies from 0.3 to 2.51 ${\mu}m$ and cavity shapes on surface are semi-circle and v-shape, respectively The results showed that higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipience to be delayed more. The incipient boiling and heat transfer increase with increasing surface roughness due to a large number of cavities of uniform size.

  • An experimental investigation is conducted to improve a slot film cooling system which can be used for the cooling of gas turbine combustor liner. The tangential slots are constructed of discrete holes with different injection types which are the parallel, vertical, and combined to the slot lip. The investigation is focused on the coolant supply systems of normal-, parallel-, and counter-flow paths to the mainstream direction. A naphthalene sublimation technique has been employed to measure the local heat/mass transfer coefficients in a slot with various injection types and coolant feeding directions. The velocity distributions at the exit of slot lip for the parallel and vertical injection types are fairly uniform with mild periodical patterns with respect to the hole positions. However, the combined injection type increases the nonuniformity of flow distribution with the period equaling twice that of hole-to-hole pitch due to splitting and merging of the ejected flows. The secondary flow at the lip exit has uniform velocity distributions for the parallel and vertical injection types, which are similar to the results of a two-dimensional slot injection. In the results of local heat/mass transfer coefficient, the best cooling performance inside the slot is obtained with the vertical injection type among the three different injection types due to the effect of jet impingement. The lateral distributions of Sh with the parallel- and counter-flow paths are more uniform than the normal flow path. The averaged Sh with the injection holes are $2{\sim}5$ times higher than that of a smooth two-dimensional slot path.

  • The heat transfer and flow measurements on a cylindrical pedestal mounted on a flat surface with a turbulent impinging jet were made. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number of Re = 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance of L/d = 2~10, the dimensionless pedestal height of H/D = 0~1.5. Measurements of the surface temperature and the Nusselt number distributions on the plate surface were made using liquid crystal and shroud-transient technique. Flow measurements involve smoke flow visualization and the wall pressure coefficient. The results show that the wall pressure coefficient sharply decreases along the upper surface of the pedestal. However, the pressure increases when the fluid escapes from the pedestal and then collides on the plate surface. The secondary maxima in the Nusselt numbers occur in the region of 1.0 $\leq$ r/d $\leq$ 1.9. Their values for the case of H/D = 0.5 are maximum 80% higher than those for other cases. The formation of the secondary maxima may be attributed to the reattachment of flow on the plate surface which was separated at the edge of the pedestal.

Focus has been put on current status of research in the aspect of heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation and building environment. The conclusions are as follows. 1) A review of the recent studies on fluid flow, turbomachinery and pipe-network shows that many experimental investigations are conducted in applications of impingement jets. Researches on turbulent flows, pipe flows, pipe-networks are focused on analyses of practical systems and prediction of system performance. The results of noise reduction in the turbomachinery are also reported. 2) A review of the recent studies on heat transfer analysis and heat exchanger shows that there were many papers on the channel flow with the application to the design of heat exchanger in the heat transfer analysis. Various experimental and numerical papers on heat exchanger were also published, however, there were few papers available for the analysis of whole system including heat exchanger. 3) A review of the recent studies on heat pump system have focused on the multi-type system and the heat pump cycle to utilize treated sewage as the heat source. The defrosting and the frosting behaviors in the fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined by several authors. Several papers on the ice storage cooling system are presented to show the dynamic simulation program and optimal operation conditions. The study on the micro heat pipes for the cooling of high power electronic components is carried out to examine the characteristics of heat and mass transfer processed. In addition to these, new type of separate thermosyphon is studied experimentally. 4) The recent studies on refrigeration/air conditioning system have focused on the system performance and efficiency for new alternative refrigerants. New systems operating with natural refrigerants are drawing lots of attention. In addition to these, evaporation and condensation heat transfer characteristics of traditional and new refrigerants are investigated for plain tubes and also for microfin tubes. Capillary tubes and orifice are main topics of research as expansion devices and studies on thermophysical properties of new refrigerants and refrigerant/oil mixtures are widely carried out. 5) A review of the recent studies on absorption cooling system shows that numerous experimental and analytical studies on the improvement of absorber performance have been presented. Dynamic analysis of compressor have been performed to understand its vibration characteristics. However research works on tow-phase flow and heat transfer, which could be encountered in the refrigeration system and various phase-change heat exchanger, were seemed to be insufficient. 6) A review of recent studies on duct system shows that the methods for circuit analysis, and flow balancing have been presented. Researches on ventilation are focused on the measurement of ventilation efficiency, and variation of ventilation efficiency with ventilation methods by numerous experimental and numerical studies. Furthermore, many studies have been conducted in real building in order to estimate indoor thermal environments. Many research works to get some information for cooling tower design have been performed but are insufficient. 7) A review on the recent studies on architectural thermal environment and building mechanical systems design shows that thermal comfort analysis is sitting environment, thermal performance analysis of Korean traditional building structures., and evaluation of building environmental load have been performed. However research works to improve the performance of mechanical system design and construction technology were seemed to be insufficient.

  • If the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) concept is applicable to the nuclear piping design, it is not necessary to consider the dynamic effect due to pipe rupture. Therefore, the construction cost can be significantly reduced by eliminating unnecessary pipe whip restraints and jet impingement devices. The objective of this paper is to develop the Piping Evaluation Diagram (PED) for efficient application of LBB concept to piping system at an initial piping design stage. For this purpose, the 3-D finite element analyses were performed to evaluate the crack stability. And the stress-strain curve based on the pipe material tests were used to calculate the detectable leakage crack length. Finally, the present PED which was composed as a function of NOP load and allowable SSE load, was developed for an application of LBB concept to the safety injection and shutdown cooling line in Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR).

  • An experimental study has been performed on thermal transport from an aluminum foam heat sink under a confined impinging air jet. Three kinds of aluminum foam heat sinks with 10, 20 and 40 PPI and a conventional pin-fin heat sink are tested in the present study. The jet Reynolds number is varied in the range of Re=667~5672 The effect of the confinement disk diameter and the distance between the confinement disk and the heater surface on the averaged Nusselt number is investigated in detail. The results are also compared with those of the unconfined impinging air jet. The critical distance, at which thermal performance shows a minimum compared to the unconfined jet impinging, will be described in terms of the Reynolds number and the pore density of the aluminum foam.

  • An experimental investigation is reported on the heat transfer coefficient from a rotating flat plate in a round turbulent normally impinging water jet. Tests were conducted over a range of jet flow rates, rotational speeds, jet radial posetions with various combinations of three jet nozzle diameter. Dimensionless correlation of average Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flow is given in terms of jet and rotational Reynolds numbers, dimensionless jet radial position. We suggested various effective promotion methods according to heat transfer characteristics and aspects. The data presented herein will serve as a first step toward providing the information necessary to optimize in rational manner the cooling requirement of impingement cooled rotating machine components.

  • The internal cooling passage of a gas turbine blade can be modeled as a ribbed channel. Most studies have considered square ribs. However, the ribs can be rounded due to improper manufacturing or wear during the operation. Hence, we have studied two different rib geometries in this study, i.e. square and semicircle ribs. We have performed large eddy simulations (LES) and experiments to validate the results from the simulations. LES predicts the detailed flow and thermal features, which have not been captured by simulations using turbulence models. By investigating the instantaneous flow and thermal fields, we propose the mechanisms for the local heat transfer distribution between ribs. For both the geometries, heat transfer is enhanced by the entrainment of the cold fluid by the vortical motions and impingement of the entrained cold fluid on the ribs.
