  • For decades, solitary waves have commonly been used to simulate tsunami conditions in numerical studies. However, the main component of a tsunami waveform acts at completely different spatial and temporal distributions than a solitary waveform. Thus, this study applied a 2-D numerical wave tank that included a non-reflected tsunami generation system based on Navier-Stokes equations (LES-WASS-2D) to directly simulate the run-up of a tsunami-like solitary wave on a slope. First, the waveform and velocity due to the virtual depth factor were applied to the numerical wave tank to generate a tsunami, which made it possible to generate the wide waveform of a tsunami, which was not reproduced with the existing solitary wave approximation theory. Then, to validate the applied numerical model, the validity and effectiveness of the numerical wave tank were verified by comparing the results with the results of a laboratory experiment on a tsunami run-up on a smooth impermeable 1:19.85 slope. Using the numerical results, the run-up characteristics due to a tsunami-like solitary wave on an impermeable slope were also discussed in relation to the volume ratio. The maximum run-up heights increased with the ratio of the tsunami waveform. Therefore, the tsunami run-up is highly likely to be underestimated compared to a real tsunami if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied in a tsunami simulation in a coastal region.

  • A theoretical equation, from which we can get a suitable ratio of bentonite at bentonite-mixed soil, was derived for desigri of the impermeable condition. Bentonite is a soil with great expansion property and it has the permeability lower than $1\times10^{-7}cm/sec$ in spite of its maximum expansion state. Accordingly if the void of soil is filled with the liquid of bentonite, water will flow only through the veid of bentonite liquid. And the permeability of bentonite-mixed soil will always satisfy the condition as impermeable zone. However, because it is very difficult to mix uniformly bentonite with soil, it is thought that the actual mixing ratio fur the impermeable zone will be grater than that by theoretical equation. Permeability tests were performed to check the equation and a modified equation was suggested from the experimental results.

  • In this study, in order to improve the mechanical properties and durability of asphalt mixtures, a modifier (CSM, Cationized Silicate Modifier) was applied to asphalt to derive optimal mixing ratio conditions. Design of asphalt mixture using modified asphalt binder was conducted, and moisture resistance and dynamic stability were evaluated for optimal mixing conditions. The evaluation results showed that it exceeded the standards stipulated in the relevant guidelines, and as a result of conducting a water permeability test on the optimal mixing condition, it was confirmed that impermeable performance was secured. As a result of examining the noise reduction performance through field test, a noise reduction performance of about 10 dB was secured compared to before paving. It will be necessary to secure reliability through continuous noise generation evaluation in the future.

  • 5 each permeable and impermeable debris dams were selected to analyze the characteristics of dredging and sedimentation according to facility type in Inje, Gangwon. Field tests for the ground water table and sedimentation characteristics of the selected dams were performed. Furthermore, data of the dredging amount, storage capacity, and drainage area were analyzed for the 51 more debris control facilities. From the results of field tests, it was found that the storage capacity of impermeable debris dam could be not enough when the large debris flow is produced since sediments are accumulated even if large debris flow was not occurred. Drainage can be a problem since the ground water table of impermeable debris dam was reached to the surface of ground. However, it was found that the ground saturation should not occur at heavy rain since ground water table of permeable debris dam was located in lower part of buttress. Furthermore, from the analysis results of relation among the dredging amount, basin area, and capacity of debris control facility, it was found that size of debris control facility was not reflected by the basin area. Effective planning and construction should be accomplished for the future since the real sedimentation amount was not significant even though large debris dams were constructed.

  • The Bragg reflection of monochromatic waves propagating over a rectangular-typed impermeable submerged breakwaters is numerically investigated by using the finite element method. The reflection coefficients calculated from the present model are compared with those of laboratory measurements and the eigenfunction expansion method. A good agreement is observed. The finite element model is also applied to calculate reflection coefficients according to variations of length and width of submerged breakwater.
