The hydraulic performance analysis of a turbopump with an inducer for a liquid rocket engine was performed using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. A simple mixing-plane method and a full interaction method were used to simulate inducer/impeller interaction. Two methods show almost similar results due to the weak interaction between the inducer and impeller since the inducer outlet blade angle is lather small. But, when the inducer and the impeller are closely spaced near the shroud region, flow angles at the impeller inlet show different results between two methods. Thus, the full interaction method predicts about $2\%$ higher pump performance than the mixing-plane method. And the effects of prewhirl at the impeller inlet are also investigated. As the inlet flow angle is increased, the head rise and the efficiency are decreased. The computational results are compared with measured ones. The computational results at the design point show good agreements with experimental data, however under-predicts the head rise at high mass flow rates compared to the experiment.

Centrifugal fans are widely used and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few research have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to understand the generation mechanism of sound and to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field of the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method(DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowsons method is used to predict the acoustic source. In order to compare the experimental data, a centrifugal impeller and wedge introduced by Weidemann are used in the numerical calculation and the results are compared with the experimental data. Reasonable results are obtained not only for the peak frequencies but also for the amplitudes of the tonal.

The high-cycle fatigue cracking and the resonance generated in operation of a centrifugal compressor are main cause of the impeller damage. In order to prevent the damage, the impeller is designed or modified to have sufficient strength to withstand the operating condition. The damage prevent design will lead to a change of the flow condition and the performance characteristics of the compressor. In this study, the computational analysis were performed to identify the flow and the performance characteristics. The cases are a scalloped and a increased the blade thickness models with a closed type impeller. As the analysis results, the value of head coefficient and total to total efficiency for the increased the blade thickness model was decreased by each 0.5% and 0.1% than the values of the baseline model. Each value for the scalloped model was increased by 0.4% and was decreased by 1.6%.
An impeller is a type of high-speed rotor that is used to compress or transfer fluid under high-speed and pressure at high temperatures. The impeller is composed of an axial hub and several blades attached along the hub. The weight and shape of an impeller must be balanced, because their imbalances can cause noise and vibration, which can lead to the breakage of the impeller blades during operation. Thus, the hub and blades of an impeller are commonly machined in a 5-axis NC machine to obtain qualified surfaces. The impeller machining strategy or process plan can not be easily obtained due to the complex, overlapped and twisted shapes of impeller blades. Skillful machining process planners may generate appropriate machining strategies based on their experiences and floor data. However, in practice most shop floor data for the impeller machining is not well-structured such that it does not effectively provide a process planner with information for machining strategies and/or process plans. This paper reports the development of a case-based machining strategy support system (CBMS) that employs case-based reasoning to obtain the machining strategy of an impeller by using the existing machining strategies of the shop floor. The CBMS generates impeller machining strategies through a stepwise reasoning process considering the similarity features between the blade shapes and machining regions. A case study is provided to demonstrate that CBMS can generate useful machining strategies facilitating process planners. The developed system can simulate the tool paths of impeller machining and runs on the web.
Centrigugal fans are widely used due to their ability to achieve relatively high pressure ratios in a short axial distance compared to axial fans. Because of their widespread use, the noise generated by these machines causes one of serious problems. In general, centrigugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the periodic flow discharged radially from the impeller and the stator blades or the cutoff. But in vacuum cleaner fan the noise is dominated by not only the discrete tones of BPF but also broadband frequencies. In this study we investigate the mechanism of broadband noise and predict for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field associated with the centrifugal fan. DVM(discrete vortex method) is used to calculates the flow field and the Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic pressures. From the results we find that the broadband noise of a circular casing centrifugal fan is due to the unsteady force fluctuation around the impeller blades related to the vortex shedding. The unsteady forces associated with the shed vortices at impeller and related to the interactions to the diffuser and the exit.
Pressure distribution around rotating impeller blades in centrifugal pump has been main issue for design of efficient and high performance automotive water pump. In addition, pressure losses of inlet water pipes should be considered to reduce additional pressure drop and design high performance engine cooling system. In this paper, pressure distribution inside water pump and pressure drop between inlet and outlet of water pump are investigated numerically to design plastic water pump for clean diesel engine application. And the inlet geometry of water pump was considered to analysis the effect of inlet water pipe geometry on pressure distribution around impeller blades and outlet pressure. The prediction results are compared with experimental data to validate and determine optimal operation condition without water pump cavitation. Major design parameters such as blade angle, volute geometry, system pressure, and coolant flow rate are considered to confirm applying possibility of plastic blades to the clean diesel engine.

In this study, flow structure in a two-stage centrifugal compressor for a turbo-chiller with the refrigerant, R134a, was numerically investigated at the design point of the compressor using a commercial code. Flow characteristics in the passages of impeller, diffuser and return channel were analyzed in detail including velocity vector, secondary flow, Mach number and pressure contours in blade spanwise and meridional plane for each stage. The estimation on the one-dimensional output from the preliminary design and three-dimensional shape of the impeller blade and the meridional shape of the return channel were performed through the flow analysis, while some numerical schemes and techniques including Multiple Frames of Reference technique, real gas property data and inlet boundary condition changes, which were used in CFD, were compared with their features. The results will be used as reference data for a new design of 3-D impeller shape to improve R134a compressor performance.

A conventional centrifugal pump causes a drastic deterioration of air-water two-phase flow performances even at an air-water two-phase flow condition of inlet void fraction less than 10% in the range of relatively low water flow rate. Then we have developed a two-phase flow centrifugal pump which consists of a tandem arrangement of double rotating cascades and blades of outer cascade have higher outlet angle more than $90^{\circ}$. In design of the two-phase flow pump for various sized and operating conditions, similarity relations of geometric dimensions to hydraulic performances is very useful. The similarity relations of rotational speed, impeller diameter and blade height are investigated for the developed impeller in the present paper. As the results, the similarity law of rotational speed and impeller diameter is clarified experimentally even in two-phase flow condition. In addition, influences of blade height on air-water two-phase flow performances indicate a little difference from the similarity relations.
The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by various impellers in a rectangular tank. Impellers are FBT (Flat blade turbine), PBT (Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine types. The solutions of flows in moving reference frames require the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are based on MRF (Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and sliding method, which is an unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches we compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper, we simulated the flow patterns with above-mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model used is RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model. Sliding-mesh method is more effective than MRF for simulating the rectangular tank with inlet and outlet. RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model strongly underestimates the velocity of experimental data and velocity by Chen & Kim's model, but it seems to be correctly predicted in overall distribution.
