Prevalence and Risk Factors for Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Fasting Glucose of Adults (30-69세 성인의 공복혈당장애와 당뇨병의 유병률과 위험인자 분석)

  • This study was conducted to draw out prevalence and the risk factors of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose for adults,(age 30-69). The subjects were 2096 adults, who had regular health examinations between January and December of 1999 at K Hospital in Seoul. The data was analyzed using chi-square test, unpaired t-test and logistic regression. Diabetes Mellitus and impaired fasting glucose were diagnosed by ADA (American Diabetes Association, 1997) criteria. The results were as follows: 1. Mens' prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus was 7.9% and womens' prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus was 3.8%. Mens' prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was 10.4% and womens' prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was 6.5%. Prevalences of Diabetes Mellitus and impaired fasting glucose increased with age. 2. Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and impaired fasting glucose of obese subjects (relative body weight>=162) was higher than that of overweight subjects (110<=relative body weight<=119) in men and women. 3. The diagnoses of Diabetes Mellitus and impaired fasting glucose increased with systolic blood pressure and triglyceride. 4. Significant factors associated with diabetes in the logistic regression best gut model were age, relative body weight, systolic blood pressure, triglyceride in men, and systolic blood pressure in women. In conclusion, as age, weight, systolic blood pressure and triglyceride get higher, Diabetes Mellitus and impaired fasting glucose prevalence also increases, porportionally.

Articulation Production Ability and the Phonological Pattern of Profound Hearing Impaired Children who Are at Different Education Condition (교육환경이 다른 학령기 고도난청아동의 음소 산출능력과 그 음운패턴의 변화)

  • This study was designed to evaluate the phonological characteristics in profound hearing-impaired children. 10 males and 10 females participated in this study and all were prelingually hearing impaired. 7 children were educated at deaf school and 13 children at general elementary school with private clinic. Their hearing levels were more than 95dB HL and did not appear any wave by ABR. The results can be summarized as following: The articulation accuracy of hearing impaired children was 54.19% and most distinguished phonological patterns of the hearing impaired children were alveolarization and stop assimilation. The accurate articulation phonation was significantly different from education system between deaf school and general school. The error articulation degrees in profound hearing impaired children at general school seemed meaningfully smaller than those in hearing impaired children at deaf school.

  • As the number of visually impaired people steadily increases, interest in independent walking is also increasing. However, there are various inconveniences in the independent walking of the visually impaired at present, reducing the quality of life of the visually impaired. The white cane, which is an existing walking aid for the visually impaired, has difficulty in recognizing upper obstacles and obstacles outside the effective distance. In addition, it is inconvenient to cross the street because the sound signal to help the visually impaired cross the crosswalk is lacking or damaged. These factors make it difficult for the visually impaired to walk independently. Therefore, we propose the design of an embedded system that provides traffic light recognition through object recognition technology, voice guidance using TTS, and upper obstacle recognition through ultrasonic sensors so that blind people can realize safe and high-quality independent walking.

  • In this paper, we studied the path determination algorithm of the guidance robot for the visually impaired. Using the guidance robot for the visually impaired, the visually impaired can go to the destination where they want without other's heir. The navigation path of the guidance robot for the visually impaired must be the optimal path not only the shortest but also the most safe, which is different from a shortest path for common people. GPS and electronic map are used for the location information of the visually impaired. We corrected the error by converting the coordinates of location information from GPS, which includes maximum several tens of meters error, to the coordinates of electronic map. Information such as simple path and direction to the destination is not enough because it may be different between a going path from the start to the destination and a coming path from the destination to the start as around environment. So, we added information which can be dangerous for the visually impaired such as driveway, sidewalk without braille blocks, crosswalk, stairs and overpass, each has weight value as dangerous degree, when matching the GPS information to the electronic map, enough large as 1:5,000 scale.

The Health and Dietary management of Impaired elderly by ADL in Gyeonggi, Korea (ADL에 의한 도움필요 노인의 건강과 식생활관리 -경기지역 농촌노인을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide information searching for health promotion, nutrition improvement, and health care of the impaired elderly by ADL(Activity of Daily Living) and IADL(Instrumental Activity of Daily Living). The subjects were divided into the Assistant Needed Group and No Assistant Needed Group for living in line with the responses of ADL(10 items like dressing, washing, move etc.) and IADL(10 items like housekeeping, using transportation, shopping, Phone call etc.). Survey was made for health behavior, health risk habit, dietary management status and diet intake by 24 hr-recall and questionnaire method. 242 subjects were collected in 12 cities or Gun districts in Gyeonggi Province, S. Korea. Survey was carried out by regional home extension workers using interview method. Statistical analyses were made using SAS (Version 8.1). Chi-Square Tests and General Linear Models. The subjects of impaired ADL elderly was 26.5% and it composed 30% of the total male and 22.2% of the total female. The demographic status of the impaired ADL elderly showed no difference from that of the normal elders, elementary school educated (73.4%), with spouse (43.8%) or with adult children(37.5%), using monthly living cost of 500-1,000 thousand won(35.9%). Mean age was 74.05 years compared to 72.25 years of normal elders. However, there was no significant difference from the normal and impaired ADL group, regular exercise(60.0%), with walking (90.0%), no-smoke(54.7%) and no-drink(48.4%). Kind of disease was not different from the one in impaired and normal group, with cardiovascular disease(32.3%), with diabetes mellitus(8.1%), joint lumbago neuralgia(32.3%) and osteoporosis(9.7%). Gastrointestinal complaints of the impaired ADL group were nausea(57.8%), chronic indigestion (23.4%), constipation (14,0%) and vomiting(3.7%). Sleeping time required for the impaired was longer than that for the normal group by 10hours(4.7%) or 8-10hours(20.3%), which consisted 1.7% and 16.6% respectively. Nutrient intake of the impaired ADL group was low compared to normal range elders: Energy(1260kca1), Protein(52.75g). There was gender difference in nutrient intake; the male impaired group showed no significant difference from the normal group but it was significantly lower in female impaired group. These results suggest that low quality of life and low economic status of the impaired ADL elderly require congregate meal in village hall to cover the lack of side dishe variety. And nutrition education program including community assistance would be required for the impaired ADL elderly together with the sufficient food and exercise practice. By operating nutrition education program, the impaired ADL elderly would maintain more enhanced quality of life and ameliorate the ADL capability.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of whole language approach on the development of language abilities and story structure concepts for hearing impaired children. For this end, two research questions have been established. First, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children’s language abilities? Second, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children's story structure concept? Three subjects participated in the study. Each subject was scheduled for a 40-minute session two times a week. Subjects received 36 sessions of use animation activities for 3 months. The study used a multiple baseline across the subjects. The followings were the findings of this study. First, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's language abilities. Second, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's story structure concept.

Prototyping Training Program in Immersive Virtual Learning Environment with Head Mounted Displays and Touchless Interfaces for Hearing-Impaired Learners

  • The purpose of the study was to identify key design features of virtual reality with head-mounted displays (HMD) and touchless interface for the hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing learners. The virtual reality based training program was aimed to help hearing-impaired learners in machine operating learning, which requires spatial understanding to operate. We developed an immersive virtual learning environment prototype with an HMD (Oculus Rift) and a touchless natural user interface (Leap Motion) to identify the key design features required to enhance virtual reality for the hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing learners. Two usability tests of the prototype were conducted, which revealed that several features in the system need revision and that the technology presents an enormous potential to help hearing-impaired learners by providing realistic and immersive learning experiences. After the usability tests of hearing-impaired students' exploring the 3D virtual space, interviews were conducted, which also established that further revision of the system is needed, which would take into account the learners' physical as well as cognitive characteristics.

The Effect of Parent Involvement Auditory Training Program on Communication Ability of Children with Hearing Impairments (부모 듣기 지도 프로그램이 청각장애아동의 언어 능력과 의사소통 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the parents listening guidance program, which allows the parents to understand their hearing impaired children and how to listen at home, on the communication skills of the hearing impaired children. The research subjects were 3 hearing impaired children who did not accompany with the intellectual, emotional and behabioral problems, and the listening guidance has been performed for their parents for 3 months through the listening guidance program. The changes in the communication skills in the hearing impaired children were observed comparing before and after the education. In the results, first, the receptive language skill of the hearing impaired children was improved after than before the parents listening guidance. Second, the expressive language skill of the hearing impaired children was improved after than before the parents listening guidance, too. Third, in the communication behavior of the hearing impaired children, the phonation and the speech production were increased together with the gesture after the parents listening guidance. In conclusion, it is deemed that the parents listening guidance program would have positive influence on the communication behavior of the hearing impaired children.

The effect of child, adolescent period's father-child relationship on interpersonal problems among married women : The mediating role of impaired objective self and emotional regulation difficulties (어린 시절 부-자녀관계가 대인관계문제에 미치는 영향 : 대상적 자기손상과 정서조절곤란의 매개효과)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the process of how a parent-child relationship affects an impaired objective self, emotional regulation difficulties, and, consequently, interpersonal problems. Methods: To carry out this study, a total of 467 married women were surveyed on their parent-child relationship, impaired objective self, and emotional regulation difficulties. The resulting data was interpreted using descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation models analysis. Results: First, the parent-child relationship shows negative correlations with an impaired objective self, emotional regulation difficulties, and interpersonal problems. In addition, an impaired objective self, emotional regulation difficulties, and interpersonal problems show positive correlations with one another. Second, an impaired objective self and emotional regulation difficulties mediate the parent-child relationship and intrapersonal problems consecutively. Conclusions: This indicates that efforts to mitigate an impaired objective self and to intervene in difficulties in emotional regulation can help address intrapersonal difficulties. Finally, this paper examines how this study affects the ongoing discussion on this matter and its implications for future studies.

A Kinematic Characteristics of Throwing Performance on Period When Blind's became Sightless (시각장애인의 실명시기에 따른 던지기 동작의 운동학적 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze a kinematic characteristics of throwing performance among born visually impaired, postnatal visually impaired and visually correct people through their kinematic characteristics. Another purpose of this study is to prevent injury and improve blind's exercise leadership and physical abilities. Three video cameras were used and each camera's shooting velocity was 60field/sec. Then the longest thrown pose was collected and analyzed by using Kwon 3D ver. 3.1 program. The results obtained from this study were followings; 1. During release, the fastest speed of ball was visually corrected followed by postnatal visually impaired and then born visually impaired. 2. Visually corrected used wrist joint well and had wide body round range with similar motion patterns, however born visually impaired couldn't do this at all. 3. Visually corrected used waist to lead shoulder at Phase 2 while throwing ball, but some of born visually impaired and postnatal visually impaired couldn't use waist to lead shoulder. 4. Visually corrected looked at the way where ball would go, but blinds couldn't look where ball would go. 5. Not like visually corrected who show similar patterns, born visually impaired showed each different patterns and some postnatal visually impaired showed similar patterns with visually corrected. 6. While throwing ball, visually corrected showed flexible weight-movement, postnatal visually impaired were not good as visually corrected, and born visually impaired couldn't do weight-movement at all. Synthetically, this result showed that throwing motions are affected a lot by the time when people became blind.
