  • An analysis of the dynamics in the closing phase of the occluder of a mechanical monoleaflet heart valve prosthesis is presented. The dynamic analysis of the fluid in the vicinity of the occluder was based on the control vo]use approach. The backflow velocity of the fluid was computed by applying the continuity, Bernoulli's and momentum equations in the unsteady state. By considering the fluid pressure and gravity as external forces acting on the occluder, the moment equilibrium on fine occluder was employed to analyze the motion of the occluder during closing and the force of impact between the occluder and the guiding struts. Occluder comes to rest after several oscillations in about 10-18 msec after the Inltiaton of closing. As the aortic pressure increases, the occludes closes faster and comes to the final resting position earlier and the impact force increases also. But backflow is not af footed by the variation of the aortic pressure. With decreasing time delay of the ventricle pressure, the occluder closes faster and impact force Increases. The computed magnitudes of the occluder tiP velocities as well as the backflow of the fluid during the closing phase using this model were in agreement with previously reported experimental measurements.

  • For robotic endoscope, some researchers suggest pneumatic actuators based on inchworm motion. But, the existing endoscopes have not been replaced completely because human intestine is very sensitive and susceptible to damage. We design and test a new locomotion of robotic endoscope that allows safe maneuverability in the human intestine. The actuating mechanism is composed of two solenoids at each side and a single permanent magnet. When the current direction is reversed, repulsive force and attractive at the opposition side propels permanent magnet. Impact force against robotic endoscope transfers momentum from moving magnet to endoscope capsule. The direction and moving speed of the actuator can be controlled by adjustment of impact force. Modeling and simulation experiments are carried out to predict the performance of the actuator. Simulations show that force profile of permanent magnet is the dominant factor for the characteristic of the actuator. The results of simulations are verified by comparing with the experimental results.

  • Numerical analysis of the heat transfer associated with droplet impact on a hot solid surface is performed by solving the equations governing conservation of mass, momentum and energy in the liquid and gas phases. The deformed droplet shape is tracked by a level set method which is modified to achieve volume conservation and to include the effect of contact angle at the wall. The numerical method is validated through the calculations for the cases reported in the literature. Based on the numerical results, the heat transfer rate is found to depend strongly on the droplet spread radius. Decreased advancing/receding contact angles enlarge the splat radius and in turn enhance the wall heat flux. The effect of impact velocity on the droplet spread is reduced as the droplet size decreases. Also, droplet atomization is observed to significantly enhance the heat transfer rate and the effect is pronounced for a smaller size of droplet. An existing model equation to predict the maximum spread radius is improved for application to a micro droplet.

  • SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) on DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a multi-functional after-treatment device which integrates soot filtration and DeNOx function into a single can. Because of its advantage in package and cost, the SCR on DPF is considered as a potential candidate for future application. It inherently employes wall flow type monolithic reactor so ash included in exhaust gas may deposit inside the inlet channel of this device. This study is intended to identify the impact of ash deposit on SCR reaction under wall flow type monolithic reactor. Simulation approach is used so relevant species transport equations for wall flow type monolith is derived. These equations can be solved together with momentum conservation equations and give solution for conversion performance. Both ash deposit and clean catalyst case are simulated and comparison of these two cases gives an insight for the impact of ash deposit on conversion performance. Ash deposit can be classified as ash layer and ash plug. and impact of ash deposit is described along with different morphology of ash deposit.

  • We have investigated aluminum cluster deposition using a classical molecular dynamics simulations. We studied the variations of the cluster momentum and the impulse force during collisions, and found that the close-packed cluster impact has some of properties of the single particle collision and the linear atomic chain collisions. We also simulated the series of energetic cluster deposition with energy Per atom. When energy Per atom in cluster has some eV rather than very low, the intermixing occurred easily in growth film and we can obtain a good film without subsequent annealing process.

  • The droplet motion on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is studied by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid- gas interface is determined by an level-set method which is based on a sharp-interface representation for accurately imposing the matching or coupling conditions at the interface. The method is modified to treat the dynamic contact angle at the liquid-gas-solid interface. The computations are performed to investigate a droplet impact and merging pattern on a flat substrate to find a optimal condition in a micro-line patterning process. The effects of dynamic contact angles on droplet motion are quantified.

  • The global performance of various ships estimated by simplified formulae of classification societies is compared with the numerical results by a strip-theory-based whipping analysis program including slamming impact(USLAM). Heave acceleration, pitch angle and the vertical acceleration are compared and the effectiveness of simplified formulae is evaluated. Four different ship models are used for comparison study, which include S175, Flokstra, 6000TEU and 8100TEU container ships. In order to verify the numerical results, the vertical bending moment of S175 is compared with the results of ITTC workshop data.

  • Seed separation from half-cut red pepper were investigated with free falling, up-and-down shaking and rotating collision methods. The separation rates were related with impact appiied and the rotating case was distinguished from the other two methods. Beside the impact effect, velocity of the pod and tumbling factors were involved. Momentum effectiveness of seed separation were calculated as $2.50{\times}10^{-6}$, $2.09{\times}10^{-6}$, and $3.94{\times}10^{-8}$ for free falling, shaking and rotating method on the same velocity basis, respectively. The tendency of separation rate was similar to that of red pepper drying rate against time.

  • In this paper, the fault analysis of the momentum wheel, which is a high-speed rotary machinery of 'Control Moment Gyro' for medium and large satellite, was described. For fault diagnosis, envelope spectrum analysis was performed using Hilbert transformation method and signal demodulation method to find the impact signals periodically generated from amplitude modulated signals. Through this, the fault of the momentum wheel was diagnosed by analyzing whether there was a harmonic component of the rotational frequency and a bearing fault frequency in a specific frequency band with a high peak.

  • Understanding the origin of strong galactic outflows and the suppression of star formation in dwarf galaxies is a key problem in galaxy formation. Using a set of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated dwarf galaxy, we show that the momentum transferred from resonantly scattered Lyman-alpha(LyA) photons can suppress star formation by a factor of two in metal-poor galaxies by regulating the dynamics of star-forming clouds before the onset of supernova explosions (SNe). This is possible because each LyA photon resonantly scatters and imparts ~10-300 times greater momentum than in the single scattering limit. Consequently, the number of star clusters predicted in the simulations is reduced by a factor of ~5, compared to the model without the early feedback. More importantly, we find that galactic outflows become weaker in the presence of strong LyA radiation feedback, as star formation and associated SNe become less bursty. We also examine a model in which radiation field is arbitrarily enhanced by a factor of up to 10, and reach the same conclusion. The typical mass-loading factors in our metal-poor dwarf system are estimated to be ~5-10 near the mid-plane, while it is reduced to ~1 at larger radii.
