The Porous pavement gains popularity because of several benefits. It is to minimize hydro-planning condition, spraying condition, and splash to increase friction resistance, and decrease noise. Also, other studies showed that it is important to have appropriate porosity to reduce noise and water flush. The purpose of this study is an evaluation on the mechanical properties of asphalt pavements for surface course. In this study the specimen was manufactured using the Gyratory compactor in order to compact the strengthened surface course that involved the two-layer pavement. This study is conducted by using Marshall stability test(KS F 2377), Impact resonance test, Schmidt hammer test(KS F 2730), and the Uniaxial compression test(KS F 2314). Using the Uniaxial compression test and Schmidt hammer test, the values of compressive strength and bearing capacity were measured, and the modulus of elasticity for each specimen was respectively measured using the Uniaxial compression test, Impact Resonance test.

We have developed an acoustic resonance inspection system to inspect the welding defects in the mechanical parts fabricated using friction stir welding method. The inspection system was consisted of a DAQ board, a microphone sensor, an impact hammer, and controlled by a PC software. The system was developed to collect and analyze the sound signal generated by hitting the sample with an impact hammer to determine whether it is defective. In this study, 100% welded good samples were compared with 95%, 90%, and 85% welded samples, respectively. The variation of the completeness in welding did not affect the visual appearance in the samples. As a result of analyzing the natural frequencies of the good samples, the five natural frequency peaks were identified. In the case of the defective samples, the frequency change was observed. The welding failure detection time was fast enough to be only 0.7 seconds. Employing our welding defect inspection system to the actual industrial field will maximize the efficiency of quality inspection and thus improve the productivity.
PURPOSES : A tack coat has been utilized to increase the bond performance between the surface layer and base course (intermediate course) at various road pavement sites. This is similarly true in other nations. Based on this connection, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures with an RSC-4 or BD-Coat and determine the application rate of the tack coat. METHODS : The HMA specimens were manufactured using superpave gyratory compaction. The HMA mixtures were composed of a 5-cm thick surface layer and a 10-cm thick base course. An impact hammer resonance test (IHRT) and a static load shear test were conducted to evaluate the performance of the HMA mixtures with a tack coat. From these tests, the dynamic moduli related to the high-frequency resistance and interlayer shear strength (ISS) of HMA could be obtained. RESULTS : The results of the dynamic moduli of HMA are discussed based on the resonance frequency (RF). To check the accuracy of the IHRT, we conducted a coherence analysis. A direct shear test using the application of a static load test was carried out to evaluate the interlayer shear strength (ISS) of HMA. CONCLUSIONS : The maximum ISS was demonstrated at an RSC-4 application rate of 462 gsm, and the maximum dynamic modulus was demonstrated at an RSC-4 application rate of 306 gsm. By averaging the results of the ISS, the maximum ISS values were obtained when a BD-Coat application rate of 602 gsm was applied.

Explosively activated pyro-technic device is used to release exhausted rocket booster or payloads at prescribed times in the rocket's flight. It creates pyro-shock environment that rocket or payload components must survive. With the shock spectra acquired from flight data, laboratory test should be performed before flight to check whether all of component can sustain the shock environment. The pyro-shock environment simulation was created by the resonance fixture response to a projectile impact. Desired shock spectra is realized by adjusting the natural frequency of resonance plate and the velocity of impact hammer. This paper describes the development process of Pyro-shock testing machine, which is designed and tested by Korean engineers, to verify components of Korean Sounding Rocket(KSR-3) and the other Korean space vehicle. Both analytical and experimental techniques are introduced in this paper.

This paper describes analysis results of vibration characteristics and modal test for a small-scale quad-rotor drone. The rotor arm has a slender body with a propeller and motor at its tip. Rotor system generates excitation for an unbalanced mass. Therefore, the drone platform is involved in the possibility of resonance. For advance identification of the possibility of resonance, confirmation of eigen-mode being closest to the propeller operation range is necessary. Material properties of CFRP tubes used for the rotor arm were acquired by finding the natural frequency based on Rayleigh method. A simplified quad-rotor FE model consisting of rotor arm assembly with tip mass was built to perform numerical analysis, and a free-free boundary condition was applied to provide flight status. Modal tests for the actual platform with impact hammer instrument were performed to verify analysis results. Separation margin from hazardous eigen-mode was checked on the propeller operation range.
Resonance of railroad bridge can be broken out when natural frequency of the bridge coincides with exciting frequency of moving forces. In order to avoid aforementioned unpleasant response of the structure, exact determination of dynamic structural properties is important to understand dynamic behavior of the structure under moving train loads. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale IPC girder and 15m Precom girder models were fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios. In the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied to obtain frequency response functions more exactly and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with structural status.

The dynamic behavior of a small wind-turbine blade was analyzed experimentally. Arrays of fiber Bragg-Grating (FBG) sensors attached along the blade were used to measure the strains of the blade surface. An impact test was performed to estimate the resonance frequencies of the fundamental and higher modes of the cantilever blade system developed for this study. The results were similar to the results for conventional strain gages. However, FBG sensors could sense modes that strain gauges could not sense. The strains obtained from the FBG sensor array were used to estimate displacement-mode shapes of the blade.

The mechanical property of a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is subjected to two elements, carbon fiber and polymer resin, in a first step and the selection of multi-layered structure is second one. Many combination of fabric layers, i.e. plainweave, twillweave, can be derived for candidates of test specimen used for a basic mechanical components so that a reliable identification of dynamic nature of possible multi-layered structures are essential during the development of CFRP based component system. In this paper, three kinds of multi-layered structure specimens were prepared and the dynamic characteristics of service specimens were conducted through classical modal test process with impact hammer. In addition, the design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility function was applied for the measured response data so that the response sensitivity for each resonance frequency were compared for three CFRP test specimens. Finally, the evaluation of CFRP specimen over different multi-layered fabric structures are commented from the experimental consequences.

This paper described the free vibration characteristics of Optimized H Type (OHT) spacer grids (SG) supporting the PWR fuel rod. The vibration test and the finite element (FE) analysis are performed under the free boundary condition and the clamped at two points (or three points) in the bottom which is the same one as the experimental condition for the dummy rod continuously supported by spacer grids. A modal test is conducted by the impulse excitation method using an impulse hammer and an accelerometer, and the TDAS module of the I-DEAS software is used to acquire and analyze the sensor signals. The softwares related to the FE analysis are the I-DEAS for the geometrical shape modeling and meshing, and the ABAQUS for solving. The fundamental frequency of the OHT SG by experiment under a clamped condition at two points is 175.18 Hz, and shows a bending mode. We think there is no resonance between the fuel rod and the SG because the SG's frequency is higher than that of the fuel rod existing in the range from 30 to 120 Hz. The fundamental frequency of the SG under the free boundary condition is 349.2 Hz showing a bending mode, and the results between the test and the analysis have a good agreement with maximum 7 % in error It is also found that the FE analysis model of the OHT SGs to analyze an impact, a buckling and vibration et al. has been generated with reliability.

Precise estimation of a structure's dynamic characteristics is indispensable for ensuring stable dynamic responses during lifetime especially for the structures which can experience resonance such as railway bridges. In this paper, the results of forced vibration tests of different excitation methods (vibration exciter and impact hammer) are compared to examine the differences and the cause of differences of extracted natural frequencies. Consequently a natural frequency modification method is suggested to eliminate effects of non-structural disturbance factors. Also, sequential forced vibration tests are performed before and after track construction according to the construction stage of a railway bridge, and the variation of natural frequencies are examined. Effect of added mass of vibration exciter and variation of support condition due to the level of excitation force are concluded as the major cause of natural frequency differences. Thus eliminating these effects can enhance the reliability of the extracted natural frequencies. Construction of track affects not only the mass of structure but also the stiffness of the structure. Also, the amount of increase in stiffness varies according to the level of structural deflection. Therefore, reasonable estimation of the level of structural response during operation is important for precise natural frequency calculation at design phase.
