  • A survey of 2,123 slaughtered adult sheep in markets of the south-east Kazakhstan established that the average contamination of animals by Echinococcus granulosus is 9.1% with primary localization of cysts in livers and lungs. The histologic structure of the muscle tissue of infected sheep displayed destructive changes with a prevalence of granular dystrophy. The amount of protein, fat, calcium and energetical value of such meat considerably decreased. Besides in the muscle tissue of the animals infected with echinococcosis there was a substantial increase of humidity and amount of ash as well as qualitative and quantitative changes of the amino acids profile. Along with damage to the synthesis of proteins and sharp insufficiency of vitamins A, E, $B_1$, and $B_2$ there was a shift in a lipidic exchange that was expressed as a noticeable reduction in the level of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The data support the conclusion that the meat from the sheep infected with echinococcosis is of inferior quality and quantity compared to that of healthy animals.

  • We investigated the effects of dietary lipid sources on growth and fatty acid composition of juvenile Chinese longsnout catfish. Triplicate groups of fish (initial average weight, 3.8 g) were fed four diets containing either fish oil (FO), soybean oil (SO), linseed oil (LO) and lauric acid (LA) for 10 weeks. There were no differences among the groups in body weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and body proximate composition of fish fed the diets containing different lipid sources (P > 0.05) during the study. However, fatty acids compositions of the whole body were influenced by dietary lipid source. Fish fed the SO diet had high concentration of linoleic acid, whereas those of fish fed the LO diet were rich in linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. Fish fed the FO diet had significantly (P < 0.05) higher levels of monounsaturated fatty acids such as 18:1n-9 and 20:1n-9 than those of fish fed the SO and LO diets. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) composition of body were not influenced by dietary lipid source. The results suggest that each of FO, SO, LO or LA can be used as a lipid source in the diets of Chinese longsnout catfish without any negative effects on growth and feed utilization and these data demonstrate the potential impact which dietary fat composition can change the body fatty acid profile.

  • This study investigated the impact of microalgal oil (MO) on body weight management in C57BL/6J mice. Obesity was induced for 8 weeks and animals were orally supplemented with the following for 8 additional weeks: beef tallow (BT), corn oil, fish oil (FO), microalgal oil (MO), or none, as a high fat diet control group (HD). A normal control group was fed with a normal diet. After completing the experiment, the FO and MO groups showed significant decreases in body weight gain, epididymal fat pad weights, serum triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels compared to the HD and BT groups. A lower mRNA expression level of lipid anabolic gene and higher levels of lipid catabolic genes were observed in both FO and MO groups. Serum insulin and leptin concentrations were lower in the MO group. These results indicated that microalgal oil has an anti-obesity effect that can combat high fat diet-induced obesity in mice.

  • PURPOSES : Road sectors contribute approximately 16 % of total GHG emission rates in South Korea. Engineers and experts expend significant efforts to identify countermeasures for the reduction of carbon emission. This study aims to determine how total carbon emission rates change depending on whether or not there is speed limit enforcement. METHODS : In this study, Lamm's travel speed profile theory is first adopted to select the hazard road, which sections are designated as speed limit enforcement. Second, Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) was used to simulate the carbon emission on the road. RESULTS : The total carbon emission rate under speed limit enforcement was 10,773 g higher than the condition without speed limit enforcement in the designated road. This might affect acceleration, which can lead to increased emissions. CONCLUSIONS : There would be no researches about proving the relationship how speed limit enforcement has an effect on carbon emission. The result of our study can provide valuable guidelines regarding road safety and eco-friendly roads.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of reverse link synchronous CDMA with orthogonal spreading and Rake combining, and compare this to that of an asynchronous transmission under Rayleigh multipath fading environments. The link performance is evaluated in terms of average bit error rate (BER) and capacity, assuming ideal BPSK data modulation. The focus of this paper is on the impact that the multipath intensity profile (MIP) shape and number of taps in Rake receiver have on the performance of synchronous transmission. The results show the reverse link synchronous transmission can always achieve smaller BER than the asynchronous transmission even if inter-path interference exists.

  • Fire simulation by using a computational fluid dynamics model and examination of the fires at indoor shooting ranges broken out in the past were conducted, to presume causes of the fire at the indoor shooting range in Busan and suggest fire safety measures. On-site investigations and shooting tests on unburned gunpowder were also carried out. No trace of the muzzle spark and spark at the bullet trap was found in CCTV footage, and the impact of a stray bullet failed to ignite gunpowder. Cigarette was therefore presumed to be the most likely source of ignition among the potential sources. It appeared that the explosion in the shooting area was caused by violent burning of the polyurethane sound absorber and unburned gunpowder accumulated on it. The fire safety measures include prohibit of use of profile polyurethane sound absorber, removal of steel components from bullet trap, clean up and control of unburned gunpowder, etc.

  • A novel PM (powder metallurgy) steel for automotive power-train gear components was developed to reduce manufacturing cost, while meeting application requirements. The high-density PM steel was manufactured by mixing using special Cr-Mo atomized iron powders, high-pressure compaction, and sintering. Tensile strength, charpy impact, bending fatigue, and contact fatigue tests for the PM steel were carried out and compared to conventional forged steel. Pinion gears for auto-transmission were also manufactured by helical pressing, sintering, and surface densification process. In order to evaluate the durability of the PM parts, auto-transmission durability tests were performed using dynamometer tests. Results showed that the PM steel fulfilled the requirements for pinion gears indicating suitable tensile, bending fatigue, contact fatigue strengths and improved gear tooth profile. The PM gears also showed good performance during the transmission durability tests. As a result, the PM gears showed significant potential to replace the conventional forged steel gears manufactured by tooth machining (hobbing, shaving, and grinding) processes.
