  • This study deals with mechanism of relay operation and modeling of transfer function between impact force and sound pressure due to the impact force in order to reduce relay noise. A collision between a moving-contact and fix-contact produces impact noise. Therefore impact noise of relay is determined by not only excitation force but also transfer function from impact force to noise. In this study, we find mechanism of relay operation, make impact force model and measure characteristic of relay noise. And also we find transfer function of relay noise.

  • An egg grading machine is composed of many mechanisms of which functions are to carry eggs to the bucket in that sensors are located to categorize eggs by their weight, to transfer eggs from the basket of packer holder to the mold tray, to feed the mold tray dispenser after egg chairs are filled with eggs. This paper deals with the analysis and new design of packer holder mechanism of which function is transfer eggs vertically from the bucket conveyor to the mold tray dispenser. Egg is fragile to impact so in designing packer holder mechanism it is necessary to estimate moving speed, acceleration and impact when eggs are touched by any links of mechanism and mold tray dispenser. A new packer holder mechanism is proposed in this paper, which use quick return mechanism composed of 6 links with pin and contact joints.

  • Recently PZT is used in ultra precision mechanism field. PZT has a small motion range although it has a high resolution. Many methods, such as inchworm, impact driving, etc., have been applied for the expansion of the motion range.? In this study, the new actuating mechanism for rotational motion with two PZT actuators is proposed. The ultra precision rotational actuator which is made by proposed mechanism is able to operate both coarse and fine motion. The design parameters of the proposed mechanism are considered to improve the performance of the system. The rotational stage which is applied by the proposed mechanism is fabricated. The resolution and velocity for fabricated rotational stage are measured by laser interferometer.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of impact punching in brittle materials, an experimental setup was developed. In the setup, a long bar as a punch was used to apply the impact load to the specimen plate and measure the applied impact force during the impact punching process. Impact punching tests with various shape of punches were performed in soda-lime glass and silicon wafer under a different level of contact pressure. The damage appearance after the impact punching was examined according to the applied contact pressure. The minimum contact pressure required for a complete punching in glass specimens without development of radial cracks around the punched hole was sought at each condition. The minimum contact pressure increased with increasing the thickness of specimens and decreasing the end radius of punches. The profile of impact forces was measured during the impact punching experiment, and it could explain well the behavior of the punching process in brittle material plates. The measured impact force increased with increasing the contact pressure applied to the plates.

  • Impact damper is a passive damping system that controls undesirable vibration with mass block impacting with stops fixed to the excited structure, introducing momentum exchange and energy dissipation. However, harmful momentum exchange may occur in the random excitation increasing structural response. Based on the mechanism of impact damping system, a semi-active impact damper (SAID) with controllable impact timing as well as a semi-active control strategy is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of engineering structures in this paper. Comparative experimental studies were conducted to investigate the damping performances of the passive impact damper and SAID. The extreme working conditions for SAID were also discussed and approaches to enhance the damping effect under high-intensity excitations were proposed. A numerical simulation model of SAID attached to a frame structure was established to further explore the damping mechanism. The experimental and numerical results show that the SAID has better control effect than the traditional passive impact damper and can effectively broaden the damping frequency band. The parametric studies illustrate the mass ratio and impact damping ratio of SAID can significantly influence the vibration control effect by affecting the impact force.

  • This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory. The absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 6.8J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen; however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. The delamination areas of the impacted specimen were measured with the ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope) through a low-velocity impact test in order to confirm the fracture mechanism.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a model for the prediction of residual strength. For this purpose, two-paremeter model based on Caprino's is developed and formulated by the ratio of indentation due to impact and normalized residual strength. The damage zone is considered only as an indentation. Impact tests are carried out on laminated composites by steel balls. Test material is carbon/epoxy laminate. The specimens are composed of $[{\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_2$ and $[\pm}45^{\circ}]_4$ stacking sequence and have $0.75^T{\times}0.26^W{\times}100^L(mm) dimension. A proposed model shows a good correlation with the experimental results And failure mechanism due to high impact velocity is discussed on CFRP laminates to examine the initiation and development of damage by fractography and ultrasonic image ststem. The effect of the unidirectional ply position on the residual strength is considered here.

  • RCAR low speed impact test estimates repair cost of the impacted vehicle. In this study, for a mid-size vehicle front body model, structural performance for RCAR low speed impact were analyzed with changing the bumper stay shape and size. First, for improving the impact load transfer mechanism to side member the stay rear section shape at connecting area with side member was modified and the stay outer was redesigned to be normal to the barrier. Next, the investigation on stay thickness effect was carried out and the performances of several models with different forming shape were compared. The final design showed 13mm decrease in the maximum barrier intrusion distance and greatly reduced side member deformation. Additional analyses explained the validity of the final design.

  • This paper presents the experimental results to verify the atomization characteristics and environmental impact of cutting fluid. Even though cutting fluid improves the productivity through the cooling and lubricating effects, environmental impact due to cutting fluid usage is also increased on factory shop floor. Cutting fluid's aerosol via atomization process can generate human health risk such as lung cancer and skin diseases. Experimental results show that the generated fine aerosol of which particle size less than 10 micron appears near working zone under typical operation conditions. The aerosol concentration also exceeds NIOSH regulations. This research can be provided as a basis of environmental impact analysis for environmental consciousness.

  • Recently, composite material which has much excellent mechanical characteristics has been applied in many industries. However, it has a brittle characteristic under impact event. Especially, its invisible characteristics of the damaged area has been the motivation of many engineers investigation, and the nonlinearity of the impact mechanism is one of the main reason to assume the damaged area too simple. The damage mechanism of the composite laminated plate subjected to low velocity impact using ABAQUS/Standard & user subroutine was presented here.
