Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between impact and shear peak force, and tibia-accelerometer variables during running. Method: Twenty-five male heel strike runners (mean age: 23.5±3.6 yrs, mean height: 176.3±3.3 m/s, mean mass: 71.8±9.7 kg) were recruited in this study. The peak impact and anteroposterior shear forces during treadmill running (Bertec, USA) were collected, and impact shock variables were computed by using a triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA). One-way ANOVA was used to test the influence of the running speed on the parameters. Pearson's partial correlation was used to investigate the relationship between the peak impact and shear force, and accelerometer variables. Results: The running speed affected the peak impact and posterior shear force, time, slope, and peak vertical and resultant tibial acceleration, slope at heel contact. Significant correlations were noticed between the peak impact force and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration, and between peak impact average slope and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration average slope, and between posterior peak (FyP) and peak vertical tibia acceleration, and between posterior peak instantaneous slop and peak vertical tibial acceleration during running at 3 m/s. However, it was observed that correlations between peak impact average slope and peak vertical tibia acceleration average slope, between posterior peak time and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration time, between posterior peak instantaneous slope and peak vertical tibial acceleration instantaneous slope during running at 4 m/s. Conclusion: Careful analysis is required when investigating the linear relationship between the impact and shear force, and tibia accelerometer components during relatively fast running speed.
In this paper, an identification method of impact force is proposed for composite structures. In this method, the relation between force histories and strain responses is first formulated. The transfer matrix, which relates the strain responses of sensors and impact force information, is constructed from the finite element method (FEM). Based on this relation, an optimization model to minimize the difference between the measured strain responses and numerically evaluated strain responses is built up to obtain the impact force history. The identification of force history is performed by a modified least-squares method that imposes the penalty on the first-order derivative of the force history. Moreover, from the relation of strain responses and force history, an error vector indicating the force location is defined and used for the force location identification. The above theory has also been extended into the cases when using acceleration information instead of strain information. The validity of the present method has been verified through two experimental examples. The obtained results demonstrate that the present approach works very well, even when the internal damages in composites happen due to impact events. Moreover, this method can be used for the real-time health monitoring of composite structures.
Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the impact peak force and kinematic variables in running speed and investigate the relationship between them. Method: Thirty-nine male heel strike runners ($mean\;age=21.7{\pm}1.6y$, $mean\;mass=72.5{\pm}8.7kg$, $mean\;height=176.6{\pm}6.1cm$) were recruited in this investigation. The impact peak forces during treadmill running were assessed, and the kinematic variables were computed using three-dimensional data collected using eight infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualisys, Sweden). One-way analysis of variance ANOVAwas used to investigate the influence of the running speed on the parameters, and Pearson's partial correlation was used to investigate the relationship between the impact peak force and kinematic variables. Results: The running speed affected the impact peak force, stride length, stride frequency, and kinematic variables during the stride phase and the foot angle at heel contact; however, it did not affect the ankle and knee joint angles in the sagittal plane at heel contact. No significant correlation was noted between the impact peak force and kinematic variables in constantrunning speed. Conclusion: Increasing ankle and knee joint angles at heel contact may not be related to the mechanism behind reducing the impact peak force during treadmill running at constant speed.
Flow-induced vibration in heat exchanger (or fuel rod) in nuclar power plant can cause dynamic interactions between tubes and tube supports resulting in fretting-wear. To increase the reliability and design life of heat exchanger components, design criteria that establish acceptable limits of vibration and minimize fretting wear are necessary. The fretting-wear rate is dependent upon material combination, contact configuration, environmental conditions and tube-to tube support dynamic interaction. It is demostrated that the fretting -wear rate correlates well with tube-to-support contact force or work rate. The tube-to-support dynamic interaction, which consists of dynamic contact forces and tube motion, is used to relate single-span wear data to real heat exchanger configurations consisting of multi-span tube bundles. This paper describes the test facility to measure tube-to-support dynamic impact force and reports its dynamic characteristics through the four impact tests - a force transduces independent and external impact tests, central ring inside impact test and additional cylinder impact test. Through the tests the impact parameter change dependent upon the material difference of impacting ball is studied, and the impact parameters of Force Transducer Assembly components are measured. And also the dynamic behavior of Force Transducer Assembly is analyzed. The force measurement technique herein is shown to provide a reasonable measure of dynamic contact forces.
In this study, wave force tests were carried out for the four types of offshore support structures with scale factor 1:25 and wave forces to the support structure shapes were investigated. As the results of this study, it was found that, as the wave period increased at the normal wave condition, wave force decreased for the most cases. Extreme wave force was affected by the impact wave force. Impact wave force of this study significantly effect on Monopile and slightly on GBS and Hybrid type. Accordingly, Hybrid type indicated even lower wave force at the extreme and irregular wave conditions than the Monopile although Hybrid type indicated higher wave force at the normal wave condition of the regular wave because of the larger wave area of wave body. In respects of the structural design, since critical loading is extreme wave force, it should be contributed to improve structural safety of offshore support structure. However, since the impact wave force has nonlinearity and complication dependent on the support structure shape, wave height, wave period, and etc., more research is needed to access the impact wave force for other support structure shapes and wave conditions.
This paper is concerned with the numerical investigation of the transfer characteristics of the landing impact force exerted on court sport shoes to the sport surface condition. The reaction force occurred by the impact between court sport shoes and sport surface is absorbed by shoes to some extent, but the remaining impact force is to transfer the human body from the sole of a foot. We consider four surface conditions, asphalt, urethane, clay and wood court surfaces. For the dynamic response analysis, we construct a coupled leg-shoes FEM model and create the multi-layered composite surface model. The numerical simulations are performed by an explicit nonlinear finite element method. Through the numerical experiments, we examine the transfer characteristics of the landing impact force to the surface condition.

In this study, the impact force levels of bang machine and impact ball were measured, then the heavy-weight impact sounds generated by the bang machine and impact ball were investigated. It was found that the heavy-weight impact sources generated through modal excitation, and the impact force of the impact ball was similar to that of real impact source. The heavy-weight impact sounds were also measured in the real apartments with different slab thickness and floor structures. The results showed that the floor impact sound levels in terms of $L_{iFmax,AW}$, generated by impact ball sounds were reduced by using the resilient isolators. The frequency characteristics of heavy-weight impact sounds at 125 and 250 Hz were consistent with the characteristics of impact force spectrum. However, the difference between the impact sounds and the impact forces were found at 63 and 500 Hz due to the resonance of the floor structure and flanking noise, respectively.
Hydraulic breaker of excavator has been used for the destruction and disassembling of buildings, crashing road pavement, breaking rocks at quaky and etc. The performance of breakers is evaluated their own destructive force and the number of impact by input hydraulic flow rate and pressure on the operating conditions. Because hydraulic breakers generate high impact energy, the accurate measurement of the impact force has been facing a technical challenge. In this study, the hydraulic pressure transducer system was developed based on the characteristics of pressure variation in closed vessel fur testing the impact energy. The hydraulic pressure transducer system is consisted with a hydraulic cylinder, main base, pressure & temperature sensors, LVDT, data acquisition system and etc. The developed hydraulic pressure transducer system was applied to measure the impact energy for hydraulic breaker. The measured impact force was 438.8 kgf.m within the designed impact force bounds. The developed hydraulic pressure transducer system as a simple tester could be applied to measure the impact force and the number of impact.
Monitoring of impact loads is a very important technique in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). However, in most cases it is not possible to measure impact events directly, so they need to be reconstructed. Impact load reconstruction refers to the problem of estimating an input to a dynamic system when the system output and the impulse response function are usually known. Generally this leads to a so called ill-posed inverse problem. It is reasonable to use prior knowledge of the force in order to develop more suitable reconstruction strategies and to increase accuracy. An impact event is characterized by a short time duration and a spatial concentration. Moreover the force time history of an impact has a specific shape, which also can be taken into account. In this contribution these properties of the external force are employed to create a sample-force-dictionary and thus to transform the ill-posed problem into a sparse recovery task. The sparse solution is acquired by solving a minimization problem known as basis pursuit denoising (BPDN). The reconstruction approach shown here is capable to estimate simultaneously the magnitude of the impact and the impact location, with a minimum number of accelerometers. The possibility of reconstructing the impact based on a noisy output signal is first demonstrated with simulated measurements of a simple beam structure. Then an experimental investigation of a real beam is performed.
