  • An efficient code has been developed to predict dispersion of indoor air pollutants. The computing capability of the code has been compared with that of a commercial code in a benchmark test. After that, the code has been employed to compute dispersion of a pollutant released from a new furniture, a kind of Sick Building Syndrome(SBS). A sofa which generates formaldehyde is implemented by using an immersed boundary method. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is employed to obtain time-dependent velocity and concentration fields. LES has been regarded as an academic tool, but the newly-developed code reveals a possibility of application of LES to practical problems, especially dispersion of indoor pollutants.

  • We investigate two-dimensional laminar flow around rectangular cylinders placed in a uniform stream. Numerical simulations are performed, using finite volume method, in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$ and $0.1{\leq}W/H{\leq}1.0$, where Re and W/H are the Reynolds number and the width-to-height ratio, respectively. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the rectangular cylinder in a rectangular grid system. Comparisons with the previous results show good agreement in Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient. The present study reports the detailed information of flow structure at different width-to-height ratios in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$.

  • The 3-D unsteady viscous flow around an impulsively started rotating marine propeller is simulated using VIC(Vortex-In-Cell) method which is adequate to analyze the strong vortical flow around complicatedly-shaped body. The computational procedure is governed by the vorticity transport equation in Lagrangian form. In order to solve the equation, a regular grid which is independent to the shape of a body is introduced and each term of the equation is evaluated numerically on the grid by applying immersed boundary concept. In this paper, the overall algorithm including the formulation of governing equations and boundary conditions is described and some computational results are presented with discussing their physical validity.

  • This study investigated the effect of variation in the angle of the elliptic cylinder as well as the presence of circular cylinder on natural convection inside a square enclosure. The Rayleigh number was varied between $10^3$ and $10^6$, and the Prandtl number was fixed to 0.7. In the present study, the angle of the elliptic cylinder was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$, and the perimeter of the elliptic cylinder was same as that of the circular cylinder. The immersed boundary method was used to capture the virtual wall boundary of the inner cylinder. With the increasing angle of the elliptic cylinder, the surface-averaged Nusselt numbers on the cylinder and the enclosure increased. In the Rayleigh number range considered in the present study, the surface-averaged Nusselt number on the elliptic cylinder over = $45^{\circ}$ was higher than that of the circular cylinder. The effect of elliptic cylinder's angle on natural convection in the enclosure was analyzed according to the flow and thermal fields, and the distributions of the Nusselt number.

  • The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate fluid-structure interaction of a two-dimensional orbiting flexible foil. The elastic deformation of the flexible foil is modelled based on the dynamic equation of a thin-plate. At each time step, the locations and velocities of the Lagrangian control points on the flexible foil are used to reconstruct the boundary conditions for the flow solver based on the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid. To test the developed code, the flow fields around a flapping elliptical wing are calculated. The time history of the vertical force component and the evolution of the vorticity fields are compared with recent other computations and good agreement is achieved. For the orbiting flexible foil, the vorticity fields are compared with those of the case without the deformation. The combined effects of the angle of attack and the orbit on the deformation are investigated. The grid independency study is carried out for the computed time history of the deformation at the tip.

  • The thrust force created by a propeller depends on the incoming flow velocity and the rotational velocity of the propeller. The performance of the propeller can be described by dimensionless variables, advanced ratio, thrust coefficient, and power coefficient. This study included the application of the immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) with the stereo lithography (STL) file of the rotating object for performance analysis. The immersed boundary method included the addition of the external force term to the LB equation defined by the velocity difference between the lattice points of the propeller and the grid points in the domain. The flow by rotating a 4-blade propeller was simulated with various Reynolds numbers (Re) (including 100, 500 and 1000), with advanced ratios in the range of 0.2~1.4 to verify the suggested method. The typical tendency of the thrust efficiency of the propeller was obtained from the simulation results of different advanced ratios. It was also necessary to keep the maximum mesh size ratio of the propeller surface to a grid size below 3. Additionally, a sufficient length of the downstream region in the domain was maintained to ensure the numerical stability of the higher Re and advanced ratio flow.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of columns immersed in fluid. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-euler theory which neblects the effects of rotatory inerital and shear deformation. The eccentricity and rotatory inertial of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into accuont. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, thedensity of immersed part was midified to account for theadded fluid mass. The govering differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters ; the mas density ration of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, and the eccentricity.

  • In this paper, the wave propagation in generalized thermo elastic plate immersed in fluid is studied based on the Lord-Shulman (LS) and Green-Lindsay (GL) generalized two dimensional theory of thermo elasticity. Two displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion. The frequency equations that include the interaction between the plate and fluid are obtained by the perfect-slip boundary conditions using the Bessel function solutions. The numerical calculations are carried out for the material Zinc and the computed non-dimensional frequency, phase velocity and attenuation coefficient are plotted as the dispersion curves for the plate with thermally insulated and isothermal boundaries. The wave characteristics are found to be more stable and realistic in the presence of thermal relaxation times and the fluid interaction.
