  • This study examined how to determine the optimal sediment level in dam reservoir for efficient plan and operation of dam. Currently, Korea is applying a horizontally accumulated method for sediment level estimation for the safety design of dam and so the method estimated relatively higher level than others. However, the sediment level of dam reservoir should be accurately estimated because it is an important factor in assessing life cycle of a dam. The sediment level in dam reservoir can be determined by SED-2D model linked with RMA-2, horizontally accumulated method, area increment method, and empirical area reduction method. The estimated sediment level from each method was compared with the observed sediment level measured in 2007 in Imha dam reservoir, Korea and then the optimal method was determined. Also, the future sediment level was predicted by each method for the future trend analysis of sediment level. As the results, the most accurate sediment level was estimated by the empirical area reduction method and the future trend of sediment level variation followed the past trend. Therefore, we have found that the empirical area reduction method is a proper one for more accurate estimation of sediment level and it can be validated by the results from a numerical model of SED-2D linked with RMA-2 model.

  • Floodplain in a reservoir is defined as the area naturally formed between the design flood level and the normal pool level. Located around the dam reservoir, floodplain has been damaged in many different ways including cultivation. As it is impossible to restore all the damaged floodplain at once, it is necessary to determine their order of priority. This process considers various factors, among which the flooding frequency is an important hydrologic characteristic, Different from the floodplains in a river, all the floodplains around the given dam reservoir have the same flooding frequency. To overcome this problem, this study proposes to use the cumulative flooding area curve, which represents the cumulative flooding area corresponding to the reservoir water level. Especially, this study evaluates the flooding frequency of those water levels corresponding to the cumulative flooding area of 30%, 50% and 70%. As application examples, this study considers the five restoration candidates each selected in the Andong Dam, Imha Dam, Youngju Dam and Nam river Dam of the Nakdong River Basin. As a result, the cumulative flooding area curve was found to well represent the overall shape of the floodplain (i.e., steep-to-mild slope or mild-to-steep slope). Also, the flooding frequency of those water levels corresponding to the cumulative flooding area of 30%, 50% and 70% was found to be so effective to quantify the hydrologic characteristics of a floodplain.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of meteorological changes on tree growth due to the reservoir construction. First, climatic normals were estimated before and after the reservoir construction at the area of Imha, through the topoclimatological relationships. Secondly, the amount of meteorological changes was quantified based on the difference analysis of the climatic normals. Thirdly, the diameter increments of Pinus densiflora around Imha area were measured with increment borer. Sample trees were taken on the 6 points of 30m, 100m, 500m, 1km, 3km, and 5km from the reservoir, respectively. Finally, effects of meteorological changes on tree growth were investigated based on the analysis of tree ring increment patterns. Results showed that the growth of trees within the range of 1km from the reservoir had been increased, but the growth of ones out of 1km range had no relationship with meteorological changes after the reservoir construction. It seems that the diameter increment of trees grown near reservoir has been increased mainly due to the increased solar radiation in spring and the increased total amount of precipitation during growing season, compared with those before the reservoir construction. It is supposed, however, that the changes of monthly mean temperature has little effect on the tree growth because of its small amount of changes.

  • In this study, a performance evaluation method of water supply for a multi-purpose dam based on deficitsupply method and reservoir storage is presented. The method is applied to 16 multi-purpose dams and water supply performance is evaluated. As a result, 6 dams (Soyanggang, Chungju, Hoengseong, Andong, Imha, and Hapcheon dam) have highest performance and 2 dams (Sumjingang and Buan dam) have relatively low performance. Particularly, Buan dam is the most vulnerable in the analysis results of reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability. Therefore, measures to improve the performance of water supply are needed in Buan multi-purpose dam.

  • The main objective of this study was to offer informations about long-term seepage behavioral characteristics and to find a leakage safety management method for Juam Dam and Imha Dam, a central cored rockfill dams in Korea by the evaluating the automatically monitored leakage data. In the water leakage monitoring of fill dam, the generation of abnormal water leakage is difficult to directly detect due to the effect of outside factors such as the component of rainfall inherent in the observation value. Therefore, conventionally estimation methods of water leakage quantity were applied by multiple regression analysis considering reservoir water level, rainfall, etc.. However, the estimated error of rainfall component is relatively big in these method. This paper identifies the seepage characteristic of each dams which is not directly affected by rainfall through the hydrograph separation analysis and 3 dimensional analytical method, and thinks a leakage management method. It was noticed that two dams had site specific seepage behaviour features and were in stable state with the decreasing leakage quantity. It was also found that hydrograph separation method might be applicable to leakage safety management method.

  • In this study aims is water supply criteria relations for evaluating the possible performance of water resources systems. These measures describe how likely a systems is to fail(reliability), how quickly it recovers from failure(resiliency), and how severe the consequences of failure may be(vulnerability). The performance of a criteria evaluating with a variety of operating policies illustrates their use. As a result study frequency reliability and quantitative reliability is linear relations and quantitative reliability is high reliability for equality water supply policy. As reliability and vulnerability are in inverse proportion to each other. Therefore these criteria relation analysis can be for Imha dam to variety water supply policy.

  • This study was conducted for determining the influence of artificial structures on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in stream. Sampling was taken at upper(pool), down(riffle) and control(riffle) from two check dams, two weirs, one agricultural reservoir, and one multipurpose dam in northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do. The benthic macroinvertebrate communities of these structures were surveyed during 2009 to 2011. The simple habitat of benthic macroinvertebrates occurred at the upper sites due to pooling effects from artificial structures. Specifically, Check dam1, Jusanji, Imha dam showed very low biological attribute values compared to the down and control sites, which have greater difference in substrate characteristics. However, in the upper sites of Check dam2, Weir1 and Weir2, the difference of values of biological attributes was relatively smaller. Also, proportion of functional feeding groups and functional habit groups were relatively simpler at upper stream and the degree of community differences was greater between upper and down, control sites. Spearman's correlation between biological attributes and substrate characteristics, water quality parameters had significant correlations; particularly, the substrate characteristics were more significantly related. In conclusion, the pool caused by artificial structures had negative effects on benthic macroinvertebrate communities thus leading to simplified stream habitats at upper stream ecosystems.

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the characteristic of suspended matter in soils of Imha-Dam area by turbidity. Soil sampling was conducted at 5 points of Yeongyang (Turbid area) and 2 points of Cheongsong (Clean area). Experimental analysis was conducted using those samples. The pH of water in the soils at turbid area was higher than that of clean area. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that every sample consists in mainly quartz, illite and feldspar before precipitation. After precipitation for 3 days, the content of quartz and feldspar was decreased and the content of illite was increased at turbid area. The soil of Sinheung (St. 6) at clean area was analyzed only illite. SEM-EDS analysis showed the much content of $SiO_2$ as to every sample before precipitation, but $K_2O$, MgO, $Al_2O_3$, CaO and $Fe2O_3$ with illite was increased after precipitation for 3 days as to every sample. Experimental results exhibited that the major mineral of turbid water was illite at turbid area and clean area.

  • The purpose of multipurpose reservoir operation in flood season is to reduce the peak flood at a control point by utilizing flood control storage or to minimize flood damage by controlling release and release time. Therefore, the most important thing in reservoir operation for flood season is to determine the optimal release and release time. In this study, goal programming is used for the optimal reservoir operation in flood season. The goal programming minimizes a sum of deviation from the target value using linear programming or nonlinear programming to obtain the optimal alternative for the problem with more than two objectives. To analyze the applicability of goal programming, the historical storm data are utilized. The goal programming is applied to the reservoir system operation as well as single reservoir operation. Chungju reservoir is selected for single reservoir operation and Andong and Imha reservoirs are selected for reservoir system operation. The result of goal programming is compared with that of HEC-5. As a result, it was found that goal programming could maintain the reservoir level within flood control level at the end of a flood season and also maintain flood discharge within a design flood at a control point for each time step. The goal programming operation is different from the real operation in the sense that all inflows are assumed to be given in advance. However, flood at a control point can be reduced by calculating the optimal release and optimal release time using suitable constraints and flood forecasting system.

  • In Korea, about two-thirds of the precipitation is concentrated in the summer season, so the problem of turbidity in the summer flood season varies from year to year. Concentrated rainfall due to abnormal rainfall and extreme weather is on the rise. The inflow of turbidity caused a sudden increase in turbidity in the water, causing a problem of turbidity in the dam reservoir. In particular, in Korea, where rivers and dam reservoirs are used for most of the annual average water consumption, if turbidity problems are prolonged, social and environmental problems such as agriculture, industry, and aquatic ecosystems in downstream areas will occur. In order to cope with such turbidity prediction, research on turbidity modeling is being actively conducted. Flow rate, water temperature, and SS data are required to model turbid water. To this end, the national measurement network measures turbidity by measuring SS in rivers and dam reservoirs, but there is a limitation in that the data resolution is low due to insufficient facilities. However, there is an unmeasured period depending on each dam and weather conditions. As a sensor for measuring turbidity, there are Optical Backscatter Sensor (OBS) and YSI, and a sensor for measuring SS uses equipment such as Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST). However, in the case of such a high-tech sensor, there is a limit due to the stability of the equipment. Therefore, there is an unmeasured period through analysis based on the acquired flow rate, water temperature, SS, and turbidity data, so it is necessary to develop a relational expression to calculate the SS used for the input data. In this study, the AEM3D model used in the Water Resources Corporation SURIAN system was used to improve the accuracy of prediction of turbidity through the turbidity-SS relationship developed based on the measurement data near the dam outlet.
