  • This paper introduces the development of imaging luminance meter which measures the luminances of external/internal road tunnel. The developed imaging luminance meter complies with both L20 method and Veiling luminance method of the international standards, CIE88. In this paper the L20 method is mainly presented because most of tunnels currently adapt L20 method. The developed system has an embedded computer to operate at stand-alone. The system has a ethernet port, a heater, a fan, a defroster, a wiper and sun shielder. Compensation algorithm is applied for correcting non-linear responses to the luminance and integration time. The accuracy of measurement is less than 1% when it calibrated at the public certification institute. The developed system was also tested at the real field, road tunnel. The test results were very similar with the reference luminance meter and showed that the developed system operates well at the real field. Partial sensor saturations were happened to show the less luminance, because there were the high reflecting objects in the real field. Further study should be followed for high luminance measurement.

  • We have developed a compact and cost-effective camera module on the basis of wafer-scale replication technology. A multiple-layered structure of several aspheric lenses in a mobile camera module is first assembled by bonding multiple glass-wafers on which 2-dimensional replica arrays of identical aspheric lenses are UV-embossed, followed by dicing the stacked wafers and packaging them with image sensor chips. We have demonstrated a VGA camera module fabricated by the wafer-scale replication processing with various UV-curable polymers having refractive indices between 1.4 and 1.6, and with three different glass-wafers of which both surfaces are embossed as aspheric lenses having 200 um sag-height and aspheric-coefficients of lens polynomials up to tenth-order. We have found that precise compensation in material shrinkage of the polymer materials is one of the most technical challenges, in order to achieve a higher resolution in wafer-scaled lenses for mobile camera modules.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of performance tests for the integral Stirling cryocooler. Infrared sensor systems incorporating cryocoolers are required to be qualified to the appropriate environmental specification. Integral Stirling cryocooler for thermal imaging system have matured to the stage of undergoing formal qualification test program. The thermal environmental test of the Stirling cryocooler is presented in this paper. We performed that low and high temperature keeping test from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $+71^{\circ}C$ and operating test at high and low temperature cyclic range with acceptance tests performed at scheduled intervals. Cooldown time to 80K and steady state input power at 80K were determined as a function of cooler components temperatures at the compressor, hot end and cold tip. Tests performed on this cooler have been successful with a measured cooldown time to 80K of less than 5 minutes 24seconds for $71^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature with input power of 11W

  • Purpose : To determine whether subtraction images utilizing contrast media can improve the diagnostic performance of proximal caries diagnosis compared to conventional periapical radiographic images. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six teeth with 57 proximal surfaces were radiographied using a size #2 RVG-ui sensor (Trophy Radiology, Marne-la-Vallee, France). The teeth immersed in water-soluble contrast media and subtraction images were taken. Each tooth was then sectioned for histologic examination. The digital radiographic images and subtraction images were examined and interpreted by three dentists for proximal caries. The results of the proximal caries diagnosis were then verified with the results of the histologic examination. Results: The proximal caries sensitivity using digital subtraction radiography was significantly higher than simply examining a single digital radiograph. The sensitivity of the proximal dentinal carious lesion when analyzed with the subtraction radiograph and the radiograph together was higher than with the subtraction radiograph or the radiograph alone. Conclusion: The use of subtraction radiography with contrast media may be useful for detecting proximal dentinal carious lesions.

  • The flexible solid state device has been widely studied as portable and wearable device applications such as display, sensor and curved circuits. A zero-bias operation without any external power consumption is a highly-demanding feature of semiconductor devices, including optical communication, environment monitoring and digital imaging applications. Moreover, the flexibility of device would give the degree of freedom of transparent electronics. Functional and transparent abrupt p/n junction device has been realized by combining of p-type NiO and n-type ZnO metal oxide semiconductors. The use of a plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film substrate spontaneously allows the flexible feature of the devices. The functional design of p-NiO/n-ZnO metal oxide device provides a high rectifying ratio of 189 to ensure the quality junction quality. This all transparent metal oxide device can be operated without external power supply. The flexible p-NiO/n-ZnO device exhibit substantial photodetection performances of quick response time of $68{\mu}s$. We may suggest an efficient design scheme of flexible and functional metal oxide-based transparent electronics.

  • Detecting and segmenting diffuse targets in laser ranging data is a critical problem for tactical reconnaissance. In this study, we propose a new method that facilitates the characterization of diffuse irregularly shaped objects using "spin images," i.e., local 2D histograms of laser returns oriented in 3D space, and a clustering process. The proposed "cluster-based spin imaging" method resolves the problem of using standard spin images for diffuse targets and it eliminates much of the computational complexity that characterizes the production of conventional spin images. The direct processing of pre-segmented laser points, including internal points that penetrate through a diffuse object's topmost surfaces, avoids some of the requirements of the approach used at present for spin image generation, while it also greatly reduces the high computational time overheads incurred by searches to find correlated images. We employed 3D airborne range data over forested terrain to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in discriminating the different geometric structures of individual tree clusters. Our experiments showed that cluster-based spin images have the potential to separate classes in terms of different ages and portions of tree crowns.

  • We present a method of modeling lights from photographs taken with conventional imaging equipment. It does not use both any geometrical information and special apparatus to calculate surface reflection properties. To represent surface reflection properties of the scene, we use BRDFs which are calculated by radiance values of surface elements and light sources. And the BRDF data of each surface is further transformed to the spherical harmonic domain for efficient storage. Thus it allows to reconstruct the photo-realistic scene under different light sources, to manipulate diversely the arbitrary light source and to control exposure time of camera sensor. Moreover we test our algorithm with real image instead of synthetic image.

  • Unlike general VHR (Very-High-Resolution) satellite sensors that are mainly for panchromatic and MS (Multispectral) imaging, Worldview-3 sensor additionally provides eight SWIR (Short Wavelength Infrared) bands in wavelength range from 1198 nm to 2365 nm. This study investigates the effect of informative Worldview-3 SWIR bands for wetland classification performance. Worldview-3 imagery acquired over Sunchon Bay, which is a coastal wetland located in South Korea, is used to implement the classification. Land-cover classes for the scene are determined by referring to national land-cover maps, which are provided by the Ministry of Environment, overlapped with the scene. After that, training data for each determined class are collected. In order to analyze the effect of SWIR bands, classifications with and without SWIR bands are carried out and the results are then compared. In this regard, a SVM (Support Vector Machine) is utilized as their classifier. As a result of the accuracy assessments performed by test data that are independently extracted from training data, it was confirmed that classification performance was improved when the SWIR bands are included as input features for SVM-based classification.

  • The merging of different scales or multi-sensor image data is becoming a widely used procedure of the complementary nature of various data sets. Ideally, the merging method should not distort the characteristics of the high-spatial and high-spectral resolution data used. To present an effective merging method for survey of reclaimed land using the high-resolution (6.6 m) Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) panchromatic image of the first Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite 1 (KOMPSA T-l) and the multispectral Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image data, this paper compares the results of Intensity Hue Saturation (IHS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) methods. The comparison is made by statistical and visual evaluation of three-color combination images of IHS and PCA results based on spatial and spectral characteristics. The use of MODIS bands 1, 2, and 3 with a contrast stretched EOC panchromatic image as a substitute for intensity was found to be particularly effective in this study.
