The nurses images portrayed on the selected TV drama included being kind, accountable, having humanism (81.2%), and professional insights (56.2%), whereas nurses's administrative role such as a manager were not represented. A half of scenes that nurses showed up, nurses were asking asking for help to doctors or other hospital administrators. • Purpose: The current study was done to describe how nurses are portrayed in hospital administration journals as compared with physicians. Methods: A content analysis of the pictures was conducted using the framework of Goffman. The data were collected from all issues of four hospital administration journals published in 2005, 2006, and 2007 (n=465). Results: Overall, the analysis indicates that nurses were portrayed from the perspective of femininity and mothering. In group scenes, nurses were pictured as peripheral, compared with physicians. Sometimes the photos did not focus on nurses at all. Nurses were also placed standing in the periphery not like physicians at the center of the scene. In terms of professional portrayal, the photos in general present positive image of nurses similar to that of physicians. However, the number of photos including nurses was relatively small. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nurses appear less frequently in mass media and when they do it is at the periphery of the scene. It is, then, necessary to make greater effort to call upon mass media to cover more nurses showing a positive images of the profession. All stake holders such as individual nurses, hospitals and related associations should make a combined effort toward that end.

  • The hospital is not the place for functional isolationalism, that is, for each department to do their own activities independently. Rather it is an organization in which each part is joined together and concentrating on the same objectives. The hospital must maintain a one-system-function, so that all the resources of the hospital may be used efficiently. Although we do not yet completely understand how the nursing image as perceived by the medical team and the other members of the interdisciplinary team affects nursing practice. It is important to identify how the client recognizes the nursing image as this will influence the growth of the nursing profession directly and indirectly. So we must reevaluate the nursing image as presented to the client and find the ways to present them with a better image of nursing. The study procedures were as follow; First, the image of nurses was analyzed. The subjects for this study were 270 nurses, 172 doctors, 237 hospital employees, and 240 patients and their families from 5 local branches of the Yonsei Medical Center. The four negative responses shown in this study are as follows; 1) Nurses don't listen to patients. 2) Nurses are self-centered. 3) Nurses and careless. 4) Nurses are mechanical. Second, the concrete causes of the four negative responses were analyzed. Third, the contribution of the nurses for clinical practice, research and education was analyzed. Data were collected by questionnaires all seps of the research. Data were analyzed by use of SPSS/PC. In conclusion, the image of nurses differed according to which group, the respondents belonged. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing intention of migration by Korean hospital nurses. Methods: Using cross sectional correlational design, data were collected from 512 nurses working in 7 hospitals ranging in size from 300 to 900 beds in D city and K province of Korea. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multiple hierarchical regression using the SPSS program. Results: There were significant differences in intention of migration by age, educational background, marital status, work experience, and yearly incomes. Although there was high intention of migration of the subjects, the level of preparation for migration was relatively low. The variables that were independently associated with intention of migration were graduates of RN-BSN program, personal factors of subjects, and environmental factors. Those who had lower perception on nursing images and work condition had significantly higher intention of migration than those who had higher perception. Full model accounted for 37.3% of the variance in intention of migration. Conclusion: To prevent brain drain of competent nurses in Korea, appropriate strategies to enhance work condition should be developed and the effect of migration of nurses should be investigated in further studies.
