Image hashing has been successfully applied for the problems associated with the protection of intellectual property, management of large database and indexation of content. For a reliable hashing system, improving hash matching accuracy is crucial. In order to improve the hash matching performance, we propose an asymmetric hash matching method using the psychovisual threshold, which is the maximum amount of distortion that still allows the human visual system to identity an image. A performance evaluation over sets of image distortions shows that the proposed asymmetric matching method effectively improves the hash matching performance as compared with the conventional Hamming distance.

This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.
This paper focuses on automatic image registration between EO (Electro-Optical) and IR (InfraRed) satellite images with different spectral properties using block-based approach and simple preprocessing technique to enhance the performance of feature matching. If unpreprocessed EO and IR images from Kompsat-3A satellite were applied to local feature matching algorithms(Scale Invariant Feature Transform, Speed-Up Robust Feature, etc.), image registration algorithm generally failed because of few detected feature points or mismatched pairs despite of many detected feature points. In this paper, we proposed a new image registration method which improved the performance of feature matching with block-based registration process on 9-divided image and pre-processing technique based on adaptive histogram equalization. The proposed method showed better performance than without our proposed technique on visual inspection and I-RMSE. This study can be used for automatic image registration between various images acquired from different sensors.

In this paper we address the symmetric-invariant problem in boundary image matching. Supporting symmetric transformation is an important factor in boundary image matching to get more intuitive and more accurate matching results. However, the previous boundary image matching handled rotation transformation only without considering symmetric transformation. In this paper, we propose symmetric-invariant boundary image matching which supports the symmetric transformation as well as the rotation transformation. For this, we define the concept of image symmetry and formally prove that rotation-invariant matching of using a symmetric image always returns the same result for every symmetric angle. For efficient symmetric transformation, we also present how to efficiently extract the symmetric time-series from an image boundary. Finally, we formally prove that our symmetric-invariant matching produces the same result for two approaches: one is using the time-series extracted from the symmetric image; another is using the time-series directly obtained from the original image time-series by symmetric transformation. Experimental results show that the proposed symmetric-invariant boundary image matching obtains more accurate and intuitive results than the previous rotation-invariant boundary image matching. These results mean that our symmetric-invariant solution is an excellent approach that solves the image symmetry problem in time-series domain.

Template matching is used for many applications in image processing. One of the most researched topics is object tracking. Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) is the basic statistical approach to match images. NCC is used for template matching or pattern recognition. A template can be considered from a reference image, and an image from a scene can be considered as a source image. The objective is to establish the correspondence between the reference and source images. The matching gives a measure of the degree of similarity between the image and the template. A problem with NCC is its high computational cost and occasional mismatching. To deal with this problem, this paper presents an algorithm based on the Sum of Squared Difference (SSD) and an adaptive template matching to enhance the quality of the template matching in object tracking. The SSD provides low computational cost, while the adaptive template matching increases the accuracy matching. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm is quite efficient for image matching. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by several situations in the results section.

Image matching is fundamental process in photogrammetry and computer vision to identify and to measure corresponding features on the multiple images. Uniqueness of the matching entities and robustness of the algorithm are the key issues that have influence on quality of the matching result. The optimal solution could be obtained by utilizing appropriate matching entities in the first place. In this study, candidate matching points were extracted by interest operator, and an area-based matching method was applied with characteristics of the gray value distribution as the matching entities. The characteristic information is based on the concept of "intrinsic image" (or parameter image). The information was utilized as additional and/or complementary matching entities. Matching on interest points with the characteristic information resulted in high quality of matching because matching windows were created with surrounding pixels of the interest points that contain distinct and unique features. The experiment shows that matching quality and reliability increase by exploiting interest operator, and the characteristic information has potential to be matching entity.
To achieve the noise reduction effect in boundary image matching, we use the moving average transform of time-series matching. Our motivation is based on an intuition that using the moving average transform we may exploit the noise reduction effect in boundary image matching as in time-series matching. To confirm this simple intuition, we first propose $\kappa$-order image matching, which applies the moving average transform to boundary image matching. A boundary image can be represented as a sequence in the time-series domain, and our $\kappa$-order image matching identifies similar images in this time-series domain by comparing the $\kappa$-moving average transformed sequences. Next, we propose an index-based matching method that efficiently performs $\kappa$-order image matching on a large volume of image databases, and formally prove the correctness of the index-based method. Moreover, we formally analyze the relationship between an order $\kappa$ and its matching result, and present a systematic way of controlling the noise reduction effect by changing the order $\kappa$. Experimental results show that our $\kappa$-order image matching exploits the noise reduction effect, and our index-based matching method outperforms the sequential scan by one or two orders of magnitude.
This paper compares the combination performance of feature point-based matching algorithms as a study to confirm the matching possibility between image taken by a user and a virtual texture image with the goal of developing mobile-based real-time image positioning technology. The feature based matching algorithm includes process of extracting features, calculating descriptors, matching features from both images, and finally eliminating mismatched features. At this time, for matching algorithm combination, we combined the process of extracting features and the process of calculating descriptors in the same or different matching algorithm respectively. V-World 3D desktop was used for the virtual indoor texture image. Currently, V-World 3D desktop is reinforced with details such as vertical and horizontal protrusions and dents. In addition, levels with real image textures. Using this, we constructed dataset with virtual indoor texture data as a reference image, and real image shooting at the same location as a target image. After constructing dataset, matching success rate and matching processing time were measured, and based on this, matching algorithm combination was determined for matching real image with virtual image. In this study, based on the characteristics of each matching technique, the matching algorithm was combined and applied to the constructed dataset to confirm the applicability, and performance comparison was also performed when the rotation was additionally considered. As a result of study, it was confirmed that the combination of Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT)'s feature and descriptor detection had the highest matching success rate, but matching processing time was longest. And in the case of Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST)'s feature detector and Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB)'s descriptor calculation, the matching success rate was similar to that of SIFT-SIFT combination, while matching processing time was short. Furthermore, in case of FAST-ORB, it was confirmed that the matching performance was superior even when 10° rotation was applied to the dataset. Therefore, it was confirmed that the matching algorithm of FAST-ORB combination could be suitable for matching between virtual texture image and real image.

Recently, one of the areas where research is being actively conducted is the Internet of Things (IoT). The field of using the Internet of Things system is increasing, coupled with a remarkable increase of the use of the camera. However, general cameras used in the Internet of Things have limited viewing angles as compared to those available to the human eye. Also, cameras restrict observation of objects and the performance of observation. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a panoramic image stitching method using feature extraction and matching based on an embedded system. After extracting the feature of the image, the speed of image stitching is improved by reducing the amount of computation using the necessary information so that it can be used in the embedded system. Experimental results show that it is possible to improve the speed of feature matching and panoramic image stitching while generating a smooth image.

We propose a template matching method for component inspection of SMD assembly system. To discriminate wrong assembled components, the input image of component is matched with its standard image by template matching algorithm. For a fast inspection system, the calculation time of matching algorithm should be reduced. Since the standard images of all components located in a PCB are stored in computer, it is desirable to reduce the memory size of standard image. We apply the discrete wavelet transformation to reduce the image size as well as the calculation time. Only 7% memory of the BMP image is used to discriminate goodness or badness of components assembly. Comparative results are presented to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.
