  • In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooled the upper horizontal wall and a heated the lower horizontal wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In such case the flow phenomena near an air bubble under a cooled horizontal wall were investigated. The temperature and the flow fields were studied by using the Thermo-sensitive Liquid-Crystal and the image processing. The qualitative analysis for the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. Injecting bubble at the center point of upper cooled wall, the symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. The bubble size increased, the size of velocity and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of two vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induce to the other flow in the surround region.

  • A transflective liquid crystal displays associated with fringe field switching (FFS) mode of new concept is proposed. The device utilizes unique characteristic of the FFS mode in which the rotation angle of LC director is strongly dependent on electrode position in on state. We use the liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. Also we are look for optimized electrode size and the optimization of pixel electrode width and distance between them, the LC director could rotate about $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ depending on electrode positions. Consequently, we get high transmittance and high reflection on the optimized electrode condition. Respectively, a high image quality transflective display with single gap and single gamma characteristics realized.

  • We have studied how surface pretilt angle affects generation of disclination line in liquid-crystal-on silicon cells for 45$^{\circ}$-twisted nematic (TN) and vertical alignment (VA) modes with pixel size of 15$\mu\textrm{m}$. Our studies show that when the pretilt angle is increased from 0$^{\circ}$to 3$^{\circ}$ in the 45$^{\circ}$-TN cell, the disclination line at left side of on-pixel becomes weak and is well suppressed with $\theta$$\_$p/=3$^{\circ}$ although the pixel size Is decreased. In the VA cell, when the pretilt angle is decreased from 89$^{\circ}$ to 86$^{\circ}$, the disclination line at right side of the on-pixel is suppressed well and even for a smaller pixel size, it does not exist when $\theta$$\_$p/=86$^{\circ}$. The results inform that the pretilt angle strongly affects the image quality of microdisplays.

  • The psychophysical experiments were carried out by a panel of eleven observers on the image difference pairs displayed on the LCD (liquid crystal display)to quantify the quality changes of complex images imparted by the typical image processing operations. There were six different kinds of pairs according to their original image. The three types of visual tests performed were: pair-to-pair comparison of image differences for ordering the differences between images introduced by single or combination of image lightness change, contrast change, blurring, and sharpening, perceptibility and acceptability tests using ascending or descending series of image difference pairs ordered according to the size of their visual differences. • This study has developed a new liquid crystal calibration technique using Neural networks with median filtering and applied this technique to heat transfer measurements. To verify the validity of this new measurement technique, the local Nusselt numbers on a flat plate surface subjected to an axisymmetric impinging jet were measured and compared with the results by the conventional Hue-temperature calibration technique under the same conditions. Because the Neural networks predict the non-linear relations between temperatures and corresponding R, G, B values, Neural networks-median filtering calibration technique can utilize a much wider color band in the experiment than the Hue-temperature calibration technique, resulting in a significant reduction in the experimental time.

  • 1-D photonic band-gap structure is identified in a cholesteric liquid crystal system. The optical transmission spectrum is measured and compared with the theoretical analysis. Nonlinear transmission is measured near the band edge. Also 3-D photonic band-gap structures are fabricated from dielectric colloidal polystyrene beads through a centrifuge method. The fabricated photonic crystals exhibit opalescent colors under white light and show a clear diffraction peak dependent on the incident angle of the light beam. Also the scanning electron microscope image was taken to verify the face-centered cubic crystal structure. Bragg's law and Snell's law are employed to describe the position of angle resolved diffraction peaks. It was shown that the optically deduced effective refractive index and lattice constants were in good agreement with the crystal structure identified by scanning electron microscope.

  • Liquid crystal-polymer composite(LCPC) films promising new materials for both projection displays and vision product. LCPC films consist of a continous liquid crystal phase embedded in a three- dimensional network of polymer matrix. The liquid crystal in these LC phases can be elecrtrically switched giving rise to an opaque scattering off-stats and a transparent, non-scatting on- stats. In this work. a premixture is composed of LC, UV-curable monomer and photonitiator. LCPC films are formed by photopolymerization induced phase separation from this premixture. In conclusion, structure and electro-optical properties of LCPC films strongly depends on the selection of monomer, LC content and curing rate.

  • Porous alumina specimens with 80~92% relative densities were prepared from ultrasonic spray pyrolyzed alumina Powders by sintering at $1600^{\circ}$~ $1700^{\circ}C$. The exaggerated grain growth appeared to high sintering temperature and long soaking time. The microstructural development during sintering was investigated using image analysis. In the study of grain growth kinetics for sintering for spray prolyzed alumina powder, the activation energy for normal grain growth was 386.77 kJ/mol.

  • In this work, Integral photography with variable focusing lens arrays is proposed. We fabricate two-dimensional liquid crystal lens arrays using cohesion of UV curable polymer and lithography. Applied voltage to the cell alters the effective refractive index of the liquid crystal layer and results in a change of the focal length. By adjusting the focal length, synchronized elemental image array for real or virtual mode is integrated in front of or behind the lens array.

  • A direct-lit color-matching liquid crystal display using a lenticular lens array with grouped lens elements that image linear RGB light sources on the RGB subpixels of a color filter to enhance transmittance is designed, simulated, and fabricated. The RGB LED linear light sources were fabricated using small RGB LEDs in a linear array arrangement, and the lenticular lens array consisted of eight units of the same structure with a gap of 2.19 mm. The optical transmittance of the liquid crystal panel was improved by as much as 240% due to the color matching.
