  • Effective fire sensing is important to protect lives and property from the disaster. In this paper, we present an intelligent visual sensing method for detecting fires based on machine learning techniques. The proposed method involves a two-step process. In the first step, fire and non-fire images are used to train a convolutional neural network (CNN), and in the next step, feature vectors consisting of 256 values obtained from the CNN are used for the learning of a support vector machine (SVM). Linear and nonlinear SVMs with different parameters are intensively tested. We found that the proposed hybrid method using an SVM with a linear kernel effectively increased the recall rate of fire image detection without compromising detection accuracy when an imbalanced dataset was used for learning. This is a major contribution of this study because recall is important, particularly in the sensing of disaster situations such as fires. In our experiments, the proposed system exhibited an accuracy of 96.9% and a recall rate of 92.9% for test image data.

  • Recently, methods of using machine learning in artificial intelligence such as autonomous navigation and speech recognition have been actively studied. Classical image processing methods such as classical boundary detection and pattern recognition have many limitations in order to recognize a specific object or area in a digital image. However, when a machine learning method such as deep-learning is used, Can be obtained. However, basically, a large amount of learning data must be secured for machine learning such as deep-learning. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the machine learning for area classification when the amount of data is very small, such as aerial photographs for environmental analysis. In this study, we apply a transfer-learning technique that can be used when the dataset size of the input image is small and the shape of the input image is not included in the category of the training dataset.

  • Detection of surface water features including river, wetland, reservoir from the satellite imagery can be utilized for sustainable management and survey of water resources. This research compared the water indices derived from the multispectral bands and the machine learning technique for detecting the surface water features from he Landsat-8 satellite image acquired in Daegu through the following steps. First, the NDWI(Normalized Difference Water Index) image and the MNDWI(Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) image were separately generated using the multispectral bands of the given Landsat-8 satellite image, and the two binary images were generated from these NDWI and MNDWI images, respectively. Then SVM(Support Vector Machine), the widely used machine learning techniques, were employed to generate the land cover image and the binary image was also generated from the generated land cover image. Finally the error matrices were used for measuring the accuracy of the three binary images for detecting the surface water features. The statistical results showed that the binary image generated from the MNDWI image(84%) had the relatively low accuracy than the binary image generated from the NDWI image(94%) and generated by SVM(96%). And some misclassification errors occurred in all three binary images where the land features were misclassified as the surface water features because of the shadow effects.

  • Haze removal is an object of scientific desire due to its various practical applications. Existing algorithms are founded upon histogram equalization, contrast maximization, or the growing trend of applying machine learning in image processing. Since machine learning-based algorithms solve problems based on the data, they usually perform better than those based on traditional image processing/computer vision techniques. However, to achieve such a high performance, one of the requisites is a large and reliable training database, which seems to be unattainable owing to the complexity of real hazy and haze-free images acquisition. As a result, researchers are currently using the synthetic database, obtained by introducing the synthetic haze drawn from the standard uniform distribution into the clear images. In this paper, we propose the enhanced equidistribution, improving upon our previous study on equidistribution, and use it to make a new database for training machine learning-based haze removal algorithms. A large number of experiments verify the effectiveness of our proposed methodology.

  • Diabetic retinopathy is a threatening complication of diabetes, caused by damaged blood vessels of light sensitive areas of retina. DR leads to total or partial blindness if left untreated. DR does not give any symptoms at early stages so earlier detection of DR is a big challenge for proper treatment of diseases. With advancement of technology various computer-aided diagnostic programs using image processing and machine learning approaches are designed for early detection of DR so that proper treatment can be provided to the patients for preventing its harmful effects. Now a day machine learning techniques are widely applied for image processing. These techniques also provide amazing result in this field also. In this paper we discuss various machine learning and deep learning based techniques developed for automatic detection of Diabetic Retinopathy.

  • The existing subtract image based intrusion detection system for CCTV digital images has a problem that it can not distinguish intruders from moving backgrounds that exist in the natural environment. In this paper, we tried to solve the problems of existing system by designing real - time intrusion detection system for CCTV digital image by combining subtract image based intrusion detection method and background learning artificial neural network technology. Our proposed system consists of three steps: subtract image based intrusion detection, background artificial neural network learning stage, and background artificial neural network evaluation stage. The final intrusion detection result is a combination of result of the subtract image based intrusion detection and the final intrusion detection result of the background artificial neural network. The step of subtract image based intrusion detection is a step of determining the occurrence of intrusion by obtaining a difference image between the background cumulative average image and the current frame image. In the background artificial neural network learning, the background is learned in a situation in which no intrusion occurs, and it is learned by dividing into a detection window unit set by the user. In the background artificial neural network evaluation, the learned background artificial neural network is used to produce background recognition or intrusion detection in the detection window unit. The proposed background learning intrusion detection system is able to detect intrusion more precisely than existing subtract image based intrusion detection system and adaptively execute machine learning on the background so that it can be operated as highly practical intrusion detection system.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the trends on machine learning and deep learning research in the published journals from the Web of Science Database. To achieve the study purpose, we used the abstracts of 20,664 articles published between 1990 and 2017, which include the word 'machine learning', 'deep learning', and 'artificial neural network' in their titles. Twenty major research topics were identified from topic modeling analysis and they were inclusive of classification accuracy, machine learning, optimization problem, time series model, temperature flow, engine variable, neuron layer, spectrum sample, image feature, strength property, extreme machine learning, control system, energy power, cancer patient, descriptor compound, fault diagnosis, soil map, concentration removal, protein gene, and job problem. The analysis of the time-series linear regression showed that all identified topics in machine learning research were 'hot' ones.

  • The use of increased computing power, machine learning, and deep learning techniques have dramatically increased in various sectors. In particular, image detection algorithms are broadly used in forestry and remote sensing areas to identify forest types and tree species. However, in South Korea, machine learning has rarely, if ever, been applied in forestry image detection, especially to classify tree species. This study integrates the application of machine learning and forest image detection; specifically, we compared the ability of two machine learning data collection methods, namely image data captured by forest experts (D1) and web-crawling (D2), to automate the classification of five trees species. In addition, two methods of characterization to train/test the system were investigated. The results indicated a significant difference in classification accuracy between D1 and D2: the classification accuracy of D1 was higher than that of D2. In order to increase the classification accuracy of D2, additional data filtering techniques were required to reduce the noise of uncensored image data.

  • Image noise classification is a classical problem in the field of image processing, machine learning, deep learning and computer vision. In this paper, image noise classification is performed using deep learning. Keras deep learning library of TensorFlow is used for this purpose. 6900 images images are selected from the Kaggle database for the classification purpose. Dataset for labeled noisy images of multiple type was generated with the help of Matlab from a dataset of non-noisy images. Labeled dataset comprised of Salt & Pepper, Gaussian and Sinusoidal noise. Different training and tests sets were partitioned to train and test the model for image classification. In deep neural networks CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) is used due to its in-depth and hidden patterns and features learning in the images to be classified. This deep learning of features and patterns in images make CNN outperform the other classical methods in many classification problems.
