  • Conformal coating is a technology that protects PCB(Printed Circuit Board) and minimizes PCB failures. Since the defects in the coating are linked to failure of the PCB, the coating surface is examined for air bubbles to satisfy the successful conditions of the conformal coating. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for detecting problematic bubbles in high-risk groups by applying image signal processing. The algorithm consists of finding candidates for problematic bubbles and verifying candidates. Bubbles do not appear in visible light images, but can be visually distinguished from UV(Ultra Violet) light sources. In particular the center of the problematic bubble is dark in brightness and the border is high in brightness. In the paper, these brightness characteristics are called valley and mountain features, and the areas where both characteristics appear at the same time are candidates for problematic bubbles. However, it is necessary to verify candidates because there may be candidates who are not bubbles. In the candidate verification phase, we used convolutional neural network models, and ResNet performed best compared to other models. The algorithms presented in this paper showed the performance of precision 0.805, recall 0.763, and f1-score 0.767, and these results show sufficient potential for bubble test automation.

  • Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which is glassy polymer to have amide functional group, was induced to fabricate the facilitated olefin transport membranes for olefin/paraffin separation. Separation performance for the mixed gas consisting of propylene and propane (50 : 50 vol%) was measured by gas chromatography and bubble flow meter. The properties of membranes were confirmed by scanning electron microscope and FT-IR. The results of long-term separation tests showed the selectivity of 15 and permeance of 1.3 GPU. The membranes was compared with poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) $(POZ)/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ membranes and the characteristics were confirmed as polymer matrix for facilitated transport membranes.

  • This study presents experimental results of sloshing phenomenon done on rectangular box. A simple harmonic excitation was done on the box. Two kinds of filling ratio, 20% and 30% of height, were tested. A total of 15 pressure sensors were installed to monitor the impact pressure. Each test was repeated for 20 times to ensure the repeatability. The high speed camera captured the flaw filed and the corresponding pressure were synchronize with video signal so that the video image can help the interpretation of the impact pressure. The two filling ratio made difference in the flaw characteristic and impact pressure. The use of high speed camera made it possible to understand the bubble generation mechanism. The pressure time histories were presented.

  • This study measured the velocity of magnetic particles inside the power generation using external heat sources. Single Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) was used to measure magnetic particles that are simultaneously affected by bubbly flow and magnetic field. It has the advantage of reducing errors due to particle superposition by illuminating the thin light sheet. The hydraulic diameter of the power generation is 3mm. Its surface is covered with a coil with a diameter of 0.3 mm. The average diameter of a magnetic particle is 200nm. The excitation and emission wavelengths are 530 and 650nm, respectively. In order to find out the flow characteristics, a total of four velocity fields were calculated in wide and narrow gap air bubbles, between the wall and the air bubble and just below the air bubble. Magnetic particles showed up to 8.59% velocity reduction in the wide gap between air bubbles due to external magnetic field.

  • The radiopharmaceuticals are routinely injected to blood vessel for acquiring PET image. For this reason, It is imperative that they undergo strict quality control measures. Especially, Sterility test is more important than any other quality control procedures. According to the FDA guideline, It requires filter integrity test used in the processing of sterile solutions. Among several methods, we can decide to use bubble point test. We usually use vented GS-filters (Millipore co., USA) which are sterilizinggrade (0.22 um pore size) and are placed upper site on product vial. After the synthesis of $^{18}F$-FDG, solutions wet the membrane in filter and then go into the product vial. By all synthesis steps have finished, we can observe the presence of the bubbles in the product vial. Since we have started this study, we have never found any bubbles in the product vial. Because the maximum pressure intensity of the filter which has set by manufacturer is up to 5 bars, but helium gas pressure is up to 1 bar in our module system. So, we can make 5 bars pressure using helium gas bombe and increase pressure up to 5 bars step by step. However, it does not happen to anything in vial.

  • Air-water flow measurements are of importance for the coastal and ocean engineering fields. Although kinematic investigations of the multi-phase flows have been conducted for long time, velocity measurements still are concerned with many researchers and engineers in coastal and ocean areas. In the present study, an imaging technique using shadowgraphy and fiber optic probe for velocity measurements of air bubbles is introduced. The shadow graphy image technique is modified from the typical image velocimetry methods, and optical fibers are used for the well-known intrusive coupled phase-detection probe system. Since the imaging technique is a non-intrusive optical method from the air, it is usually applied for 2D flows. On the other hand, the double fiber optic probes touch flows regardless of flow patterns. The results of the flow measurements by both methods are compared and discussed. The methods are also applied to the measurements of overtopping flows by a breaking wave over the structure fixed on the free surface.

  • Images of microcalcification specks showed large variation in conventional radiographs of phantoms which are approved for mammography image quality standard by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This kind of variation is not appropriate for image quality standards because the number of specks are visually counted in images and that number is important in image quality evaluation. Our study using synchrotron radiation (SR) imaging revealed the overlapping of micro-sized air bubble(s) to some specks, and also the structural deformation or crackings. Eight phantoms approved by ACR from two different makers and an air-bubble phantom were examined. SR imaging was performed at a synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, in Japan. The image-detector was a fluorescent-screen optical-lens coupling system using a CCD camera with a spatial resolution of 6 $\square$m. Objects when imaged with longer sample-to-detector distance show edge enhancement due to a difference in refraction indices, that is refraction enhancement. Refraction-enhanced SR images revealed that some of specks carried foreign objects, which were proven to be air. In phantoms provided by one maker, attaching/overlapping airs were observed for 62 out of 150 specks (41%) , with a higher incidence for the smallest specks. A speck becomes hardly visible in a conventional radiograph when air(s) overlaps the majority part of a speck, though depending on the size of the air-inclusion and on its configuration. Those airs might have been adsorbed on a speck surface before being embedded and then introduced into the matrix together with specks. Our study using SR imaging has clearly shown the nature of defects in some mammography phantoms which seriously degrade the quality as an image standard.

  • We applied PIV method to obtain instantaneous and ensemble averaged velocity fields from the first row to the fifth row of a staggered tube bundle. The Reynolds number based on the tube diameter and the maximum velocity was set to be 4,000. Remarkably different natures are observed in the developing bundle flow. Such differences are depicted in the mean recirculating bubble length and the vorticity distributions. The jet-like flow seems to be a dominant feature after the second row and usually skew. However, the ensemble averaged fields show symmetric profiles and the flow characteristics between the third and fourth measuring planes are not so different. comparison between the PIV data and the RANS simulation yields severe disagreement in spite of the same Reynolds number. It can be explained that the distinct jet-like unsteady motions are not to be accounted in th steady numerical analysis.

  • Plate-fin heat exchanger is a kind of compact heat exchangers with a good performance in heat transfer. It is widely used in various engineering fields such as aerospace, chemical and biomedical industries. Quantitative and qualitative flow visualization study were performed using the water model of commercial plate-fin heat exchanger with header angles of $30^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number was 100. Conventional digital particle image velocimetry was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields of the header region and the flow visualization using dye injection and hydrogen bubble method were applied to capture the qualitative flow characteristics. The results showed the existence of separation flow region at the junction area and the bottom wall of the exit region.

  • The inlet flow of centrifugal blower were quantitatively visualized using particle image velocimetry. Because the centrifugal blower system is one of the key parts of EV battery cooling system, the quantitative information of flow field of centrifugal blower is important to design and optimize the cooling system. Two types of inlet parts were used in this study. One is the straight inlet and the other is a bended one. The results showed the flow asymmetry exists in the straight model due to the pressure difference in the blower. In case of the bended one, the separation bubble and the increase of head loss appeared compared with the straight model.
