In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. An electro-conductivity probe was used to measure local volume fraction and bubble frequency. Since the gas was concentrated at the near the nozzle, the flow parameters were high near the nozzle. In general their axial and radial values tended to decrease with increasing distance. For visualization of flow characteristics, a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and a thermo-vision camera were used in the present study. The experimental results showed that heat transfer from bubble surface to water was largely completed within z = 10 mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reached that of water rapidly. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was more developed near the wall than at bubble-water plume. Vortex flow in the bottom region was relatively weaker than that in the upper region.
In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooled the upper horizontal wall and a heated the lower horizontal wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In such case the flow phenomena near an air bubble under a cooled horizontal wall were investigated. The temperature and the flow fields were studied by using the Thermo-sensitive Liquid-Crystal and the image processing. The qualitative analysis for the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. Injecting bubble at the center point of upper cooled wall, the symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. The bubble size increased, the size of velocity and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of two vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induce to the other flow in the surround region.

In this study, an image processing method for the measurement of two-phase bubbly flow is developed. Shadowgraphy images obtained by high-speed camera are used for analysis. Some bubbles are generated as single unit and others are overlapped or clustered. Single bubbles can be easily analyzed using parameters such as bubble shape, centroid, and area. But overlapped bubbles are difficult to transform clustered bubbles into segmented bubbles. Several approaches were proposed for the bubble segmentation such as Hough transform, connection point method and watershed. These methods are not enough for bubble segmentation. In order to obtain the size distribution of bubbles, we present a method of splitting overlapping bubbles using watershed and approximating them to ellipse. There is only 5% error difference between manual and automatic analysis. Furthermore, the error can be reduced down to 1.2% when a correction factor is used. The ellipse fitting algorithm developed in this study can be used to measure bubble parameters accurately by reflecting the shape of the bubbles.

In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. The velocity of upward bubble flow was calculated for two different experimental conditions:1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) bubble flow with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of buoyancy l0cm away from the nozzle. Whereas. kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow but after this point kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time In addition, as the flow rate increases the maximum velocity point moves to the nozzle. The velocity Profiles near free surface is extremely irregular due to surface flow. Gas volume fraction is high near the nozzle due to gas concentration. but decreases with the increasement of axial position. Gas volume fraction does not vary after the axial position, z=60 in spite of the increasement of flow.

Aerating hydroturbines have recently been proposed as an effective way to mitigate the problem of low dissolved oxygen in the discharge of hydroelectric power plants. The design of such a hydroturbine requires a precise understanding of the dependence of the generated bubble size distribution upon the operating conditions (viz. liquid velocity, air ventilation rate, hydrofoil configuration, etc.) and the consequent rise in dissolved oxygen in the downstream water. The purpose of the current research is to investigate the effect of location of air injection on the resulting bubble size distribution, thus leading to a quantitative analysis of aeration statistics and capabilities for two turbine blade hydrofoil designs. The two blade designs differed in their location of air injection. Extensive sets of experiments were conducted by varying the liquid velocity, aeration rate and the hydrofoil angle of attack, to characterize the resulting bubble size distribution. Using a shadow imaging technique to capture the bubble images in the wake and an in-house developed image analysis algorithm, it was found that the hydrofoil with leading edge ventilation produced smaller size bubbles as compared to the hydrofoil being ventilated at the trailing edge.

A measurement technique fur void fraction has been proposed using a time-resolved two-phase PIV system and the bubble dynamics has been investigated in gas-liquid two-phase flows. For the three-dimensional evaluation of the bubble information, both the images from the front and side views are simultaneously recorded into a high speed CCD camera by reflecting the side view image on a $45^{\circ}$ oriented mirror to be juxtaposed with the front view image. Then, a stereo-matching technique is applied to calculate the void fraction, bubble size and shape. To obtain the rising bubble velocities, the 2-frame PTV method was adopted. The present technique is applied to freely rising bubby flows in stagnant liquid. The results show that the increase of bubble flow rate gives rise to the increase of bubble size and rising velocity at first. If it goes over a certain level, the rising velocity becomes constant and the horizontal velocity grows bigger instead due to the obstruction of other bubbles.
An experiment on bubble-driven flow was performed in order to understand fundamental knowledge of flow structure around a rising bubble in a stagnant fluid. The measurement technique consists of a combination of the three most often used PIV techniques in multiphase flows: PIV with fluorescent tracer particles, the digital phase separation with a masking technique and a shadowgraphy. The key point of the measurement is that the background intensity of a PIV recording can be shifted to a higher level than a bubble region using a shadowgraphy in order to distinguish from fluorescent particles and a bubble as well. Flow fields were measured without an inaccurate analysis around a fluid-bubble interface by using only one camera simply.
As the first step to investigate the fundamental mechanism of a dispersed two-phase flow, we studied the detailed interactions between bubble or particle motion and flow around it. Experiments were carried out with a rising bubble or particle in stagnant water in a vertical pipe. Particles with different densities, and/or different shapes were used for comparison with a bubble. We adopted 3D-PTV (Three-Dimensional Particle Tracking Velocimetry) for measuring the bubble or particle motions, and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) for measuring the water flow simultaneously (Hybrid PIV). The experimental results showed that the oblate spheroidal solid particle rose along the longer axis direction at the point that the inclination of the longer axis reached the maximum, and the inclination direction changed after moving. The bubble moved to the direction that the spheroid's projected width grew up to the largest, and the minor axis of the oblate spheroidal body of the bubble was parallel to the moving direction. The trajectory of the center of the particle/bubble which was measured with 3D-PTV, was marked on the section (x-y) of the pipe. It exhibited the pattern of the particle/bubble motion.
Flow visualizations have been carried out to analyze the characteristics of bubby flows exhausted from a venturi-type bubble generator with an air vent. For various design parameters and operating conditions of the bubble generator, the images of bubbly flows was recorded using a high-speed camera and a microscope. Then the amount and size distribution of bubble was evaluated by an image processing technique. The results show that for increasing the amount of bubble, it is more effective to reduce the venturi throat than to enlarge the air vent diameter. If the water flow rate increases, the bubble generation rate increases but reaches a status of saturation, whose condition depends on Reynolds number at a given air vent diameter. The bubble size increases as the diameter of venturi throat decreases and Reynolds number increases. However, the air vent diameter is not a significant factor on bubble size.
