  • Photon mapping is a traditional global illumination method using many photons emitted from the light source for photo-realistic rendering. However, this method needs a lot of resources to perform tracing of millions of photons. Progressive photon mapping solves this problem. Typical progressive photon mapping performs ray tracing at first to find the hit points on diffuse surface of objects. Next, light source repeatedly emits a small number of photons in photon tracing pass, and power of photons in each sphere that has a fixed radius with the hit points in the center is accumulated. This method requires less resources than previous photon mapping, but it spends much time for gathering enough photons since each of photons progresses through a random direction and rendering high quality image. To improve the method, we propose photon probing that calculates variance of photons in the sphere and controls radius of sphere. In addition, we apply cone filter in radiance estimation step for reducing aliasing at the edges in result image.

  • In ray tracing of 3D volume data, the color of each pixel in the image is typically obtained by accumulating the contributions of sample points on the ray cast from the pixel point. This accumulation is most naturally represented by integration. In most methods, however, it is done by numerical summation because analytical solution to the integration are hard to find. This paper shows that a semi-analytical solution can be obtained for a typical ray tracing of volume data. Tentative conclusions about the significance and usefulness of our approach are presented based on our experiments.

  • The scanning electron microscope (SEM) contains an electron optical system in which electrons are emitted and moved to form a focused beam, and generates secondary electrons from the specimen surfaces, eventually making an image. The electron optical system usually contains two condenser lenses and an objective lens. The condenser lenses generate a magnetic field that forces the electron beams to form crossovers at desired locations. The objective lens then focuses the electron beams on the specimen. The present study covers the design and analysis of an objective lens for a thermionic SEM. A finite element (FE) analysis for the objective lens is performed to analyze its magnetic characteristics for various lens designs. Relevant beam trajectories are also investigated by tracing the ray path of the electron beams under the magnetic fields inside the objective lens.

  • This paper is. a study on relation between road traffic noise(RTN) and sound power level(PWL). At present, many experimental formulae and prediction formulae are used for prediction of RTN. But these formulae are difficult to appiy to the metropolitan area because these formulae are inaccurate in the different condition from reference condition. This paper calculate RTN and PWL of each prediction formula, choose the best one and make a noise map of the subject area. Procedure is as follows. First, calculate $L_{eq}$ of RTN using experimental formulae and prediction formulae. Second, calculate PWL using $L_{eq}$ of RTN and distance attenuation for point source at semi-free field. Third, choose the most accurate formula. And finally, make a noise map of the subject area at present and future. The result using noise map will be able to apply to application field. Noise mapping tool used on this paper is Raynoise program using Ray Tracing Method(RTM), Mirror Image Source Method(MISM) and Hybrid Method(HM).

  • A focal length-correcting lens called the F-theta lens is required to compensate for the different focus on spot size due to the deflected incident laser beam. The F-theta lens was designed by the ray tracing method and fabricated by a 3D printer with polymer-based material. The designed F-theta lens is able to compensate for the focus on spot size by an incidence angle of 0 to 2 degrees. Based on the analysis of the simulation, there was almost no aberration in the $0^{\circ}C$ incidence angle, and the maximum of $50{\mu}m$ of aberration was observed at the incidence angle of $2^{\circ}$. Diffraction-encircled energy was analyzed to characterize the designed optics, and an image simulation was performed to confirm the actual image resolution.

  • In this paper we propose an real time marker detection algorithm for motion analysis both in 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions with CCD camera and rfame grabber only which has no image processor. The main algorithm consists of the following 3 algorithms; 1) the tracing algorithm that makes it possible to predict the expected marker location by narrowing the searching boundary, 2) the searching algorithm that detects the marker in the expected boundary using Ad-hoc previous screen search technique, tornado search method rotate diagonal search method search technique, 3) the algorithm that finds the central point of the detected marker. We try to narrow the searching boundary for real time processing. Also, it is able to find the central point of the detected marker much faster than typical contour tracing algorithm.

  • Intravascular ultrasound images of coranary artery contain very important informations on heart disease. The intimal contours on the image show informations and data to examine intravascular problems of patients. A new computation algorithm to detect the intimal and adventitial contours from the intravascular images was developed. An Image processing on gray level image was used. It uses arrays of pixels in each radial lines on the images. A "Robert" filter was adopted at first step for one dimensional image processing. Some other calculation techniques were developed to inclose the accuracy of automatically detected contours. The standard contour data to compare with automatically detected contour data were obtained through manually tracing by experienced cardiological medical doctors. The result of the new algorithm shows high accuracy of 80 % matching with the standard contour data.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for improving defect-detection performance based on reconstruction of line-scan camera images using both the projection profiles and color space transform. The proposed method consists of RGB region segmentation, representative value reconstruction using the tracing system, and Y image reconstruction using color-space transformation. Through experiments it is demonstrated that the performance using the reconstructed image is better than that using aerial image for LCD surface inspection.

  • This paper describes a new algorithm named as ray following algorithm which is applied for high-resolution satellite image simulation. The problems of the conventional ray tracing algorithm are pointed out especially when terrain elevations vary abruptly. The proposed algorithm follows the directional ray vector sequentially and thoroughly in order to determine the crossing point of the ray with the terrain surface. This way of sequential height comparison method is regarded as the only way to obtain accurate surface cross-section when a highly variant digital surface model is used. The experimental results show and compare the validities of the conventional and proposed algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved reproduction algorithm for a realistic image of the real scene based on the optical characteristics of the light sources and the materials at the lighting environment. This paper is continuation of the previous study to improve the modeling method of the light sources and the materials and apply this to the real rear lamp of automobile. The backward ray tracing method is first used to trace the light ray from a light source, and also considers the physical characteristics of object surfaces and geometric properties of light radiation to estimate accurately the light energy incoming toward to human eyes. For experiments and verification of the proposed method, the simulation results are compared with the measured light stimuli. Accordingly, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate light energy well and reproduce the visually similar image with a scene incident on a sight of viewer.
