  • For understanding of anatomy, physiology, and diseases of human TMJ, it is required to evaluate quantitatively the movement of the disc and condyle head of mandible. The histologic section of cadaver TMJ were examined, and the magnification of the MR image and its details of anatomy were evaluated. And then a quantitative analytic method, by comparing the Sectograph and the MR image of vital human TMJ, was proposed. For this study, 15 subjects(Male, 24~35years) were selected from a prosthodontic examination randomly, and each subject’s five interocclusal rubber registration records were made on the ICP, and 5, 10, 15, and 20mmjaw opening positions. All subjects were radiographed with a Denar Quint Sectograph Image System(Denar Corp., USA), and imaged with a MRP-20EX MR Image System(0.2T, Permanent Magnet Type, Hitachi Medical Corp., Japan) using an 100mm diameter bilateral type surface coil. These images were traced on the acetate tracing paper, and analyzed In this study, the findings led to the following conclusions. 1. In comparison of the histologic section of autopsy specimen with the MR image at the same section, the size(dimension) of MR image was 70% of the real one. It was possible to recognize the shape of articular disc, anterior and posterior attachments, and adjacent soft tissues, because of the excellent reproducibility of anatomical structure. 2. When we compared the amount of joint space on MR image with that of joint space on sectograph, the amount of joint space on sectograph was significantly greater than that of joint space on MR image, except at the top of condylar head. 3. The position of minimum joint space on sectograph at intercuspal position didn't coincide with the middle position of articular disc on MR image, and was approximately in the anterior third of posterior band of articular disc. 4. The amount of condylar movement on MR image at opening movement was greater than that of articular disc movement. From Intercuspal position to 5mm jaw-opening movement, the condylar movement showed hinge one, and over the range 5mm jaw-opening it suggested hinge & translatory one. 5. In terms of area variation of articular disc measured on MR image in sagittal plane, the area of posterior band increased with increasing the amount of Jaw opening, but the area of anterior band decreased conversely.

  • In rehabilitation where ultrasonographic diagnosis is not popular, it could be subjective by medical expert's experience. Thus, it is necessary to develop an objective automative procedure in ultrasonic image analysis. A disadvantage of existing automative analytic procedure in musculoskeletal system is to designate an incorrect muscle area when the figure of fascia is vague. In this study, we propose a new procedure to extract more accurate muscle area in abdomen ultrasonic image for that purpose. After removing unnecessary noise from input image, we apply End-in Search algorithm to enhance the contrast between fascia and muscle area. Then after extracting initial muscle area by Up-Down search, we trace the fascia area with a mask based on morphological and directional information. By this tracing of mask movements, we can emphasize the fascia area to extract more accurate muscle area in result. This new procedure is proven to be more effective than existing methods in experiment using convex ultrasound images that are used in real world rehabilitation diagnosis.

  • In this study, a new algorithm for canceling MRI artifact due to translational motion in image plane is described. Unlike the conventional iterative phase retrieval algorithm, in which there is no guarantee for the convergence, a direct method for estimating the motion is presented. In previous approaches, the motions in the x(read out) direction and the y(phase encoding) direction are estimated simultaneously. However, the features of x and y directional motions are different from each other. By analyzing their features, each x and y directional motion is canceled by different algorithms in two steps. First, it is noticed that the x directional motion corresponds to a shift of the x directional spectrum of the MRI signal, and the non-zero area of the spectrum just corresponds to the projected area of the density function on the x-axis. So the motion is estimated by tracing the edges between non-zero area and zero area of the spectrum, and the x directional motion is canceled by shifting the spectrum in inverse direction. Next, the y directional motion is canceled by using a new constraint condition, with which the motion component and the true image component can be separated. This algorithm is shown to be effective by using a phantom image with simulated motion.

  • In this paper, we realized a system that converts the character images of the printed Korean alphabet (Hangul) to the editable text documents by using the black and white CCD camera, We were able to abstract the contours information of the character which is based on the structural character by using the boundary tracing technique that is strong to the noise on the character recognition. By using the contours information, we recognized the horizontal vowels and vertical vowels of the character image and classify the character into the six patterns. After that, the character is divided to the unit of the consonant and vowel. The vowels are recognized by using the maximum length projection. The separated consonants are recognized by comparing the inputted pattern with the standard pattern that has the phase information of the boundary line change. We realized a system that the recognized characters are inputted to the word editor with the editable KS Hangul completion type code.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for extracting muscles from lumbar images. The proposed method sets areas without distortions with field expert's assistance as areas of measuring interest and removing noises from initial ultrasonic videos. Then, the method emphasizes the brightness contrast with Ends-in search stretching algorithm and separate thoracic vertebra from subcutaneous fat area using morphological characteristics. 4-directions contour tracing algorithm is applied to extract the bottom of subcutaneous fat area. Extracting thoracic vertebra area requires noise removal and morphological characteristics as well among candidate areas obtained by controlling min-max brightness. The thickness of muscles is then defined as the length between subcutaneous fat area and extracted thoracic vertebra. The experiment which consists of 368 image analysis verifies that the proposed method is more effective in measuring the thickness of muscles than before.

Abstract Engineers and industrial designers want to produce a realistic-looking images of a 3D model without spending a lot of time and money. Photo-realistic images are so useful from the conceptual design, through its verification, to the machining, that most major CAD venders offer built-in as well as add-on photo-realistic rendering capability to their core CAD software. Since 3D model is consists of a set of NURB surfaces in commercial CAD packages, we need a renderer which handles NURB surface as well as other primitives.A new rendering library called VIF (Visual InterFace) provides two photo-realistic rendering modes: A-buffer and Ray tracing. As an input data it takes NURB surfaces as well as polygonal data and produces images in accordance with the surface parameters, view and lights set by user and outputs image with different formats. This paper describes the overall architecture of VIF and its library functions classified by their functionalities, and discusses how VIF is used as a graphical verification tool in manufacturing processes from the conceptual design to 3D modeling.

  • When volume data is visualized by the ray casting method, the color value of each pixel in the image is obtained by composing the color contributions of the sample points that lie on the ray cast from the pixel point. In most ray tracing methods including Levoy's classical method, the color composition is formulated as a summation of the color contributions of the discrete sample points. However, the more precise color composition is formulated as differential equations over the color contributions of the continuous sample points. The discrete formulation is used, because analytical solutions to the continuous formulations are hard to find. In this paper, however, we have discovered a semi-analytical solution to the continuous formulation of a typical ray tracing of volume data. We have applied both Levoy's method and ours to the same set of data, and compared the visual quality of both results. The comparison shows that our method produces a more fine-grained visualization of volume data.

  • In this paper,a new approach-using the linear movement of the lens location in a camera and focal distance in each location for the measurement of the depth of the 3-D object from several 2-D images-is proposed. The sharply focused edges are extracted from the images obtained by moving the lens of the camera, that is, the distance between the lens and the image plane, in the range allowed by the camera lens system. Then the depthin formation of the edges are obtained by the lens location. In our method, the accurate and complicated control system of the camera and a special algorithm for tracing the accurate focus point are not necessary, and the method has some advantage that the depth of all objects in a scene are measured by only the linear movement of the lens location of the camera. The accuracy of the extracted depth information is approximately 5% of object distances between 1 and 2m. We can see the possibility of application of the method in the depth measurement of the 3-D objects.

  • Hand gesture recognition is regarded as new Human Computer Interaction (HCI) technologies for the next generation of mobile devices. Previous hand gesture implementation requires a large memory and computation power for hand segmentation, which fails to give real-time interaction with mobile devices to users. Therefore, in this paper, we presents a low latency and memory-efficient hand segmentation architecture for natural hand gesture recognition. To obtain both high memory-efficiency and low latency, we propose a streaming hand contour tracing unit and a fast contour filling unit. As a result, it achieves 7.14 ms latency with only 34.8 KB on-chip memory, which are 1.65 times less latency and 1.68 times less on-chip memory, respectively, compare to the best-in-class.
