  • In this paper, we introduce a real-time method to render a 3D scene using image-based lighting. Previous approaches for image-based lighting focused on diffuse reflection and mirror-like specular reflection. In this paper, we provide a simple preprocessing approach to efficiently approximate Phong reflection model, which has been used for computer graphics applications for several decades. For diffuse reflection, we generate a texture map for diffuse reflection by integrating the source image in preprocessing step, similarly to the previous approaches. We adopt the similar idea to produce a set of specular reflection maps for various material shininess. By doing this, we can render a dynamic scene without high computational complexity or numerous texture map access.

  • Aiming at motion analysis and compensation, it is essential to conduct motion detection with images. However, motion detection and tracking from low-altitude images obtained from an unmanned aerial system may pose many challenges due to degraded image quality caused by platform motion, image instability and illumination fluctuation. This research tackles these challenges by proposing a modified joint transform correlation algorithm which includes two preprocessing strategies. In spatial domain, a modified fuzzy edge detection method is proposed for preprocessing the input images. In frequency domain, to eliminate the disturbance of self-correlation items, the cross-correlation items are extracted from joint power spectrum output plane. The effectiveness and accuracy of the algorithm has been tested and evaluated by both simulation and real datasets in this research. The simulation experiments show that the proposed approach can derive satisfactory peaks of cross-correlation and achieve detection accuracy of displacement vectors with no more than 0.03pixel for image pairs with displacement smaller than 20pixels, when addition of image motion blurring in the range of 0~10pixel and 0.002variance of additive Gaussian noise. Moreover, this paper proposes quantitative analysis approach using tri-image pairs from real datasets and the experimental results show that detection accuracy can be achieved with sub-pixel level even if the sampling frequency can only attain 50 frames per second.

  • Image is composed of the digital numbers including information on natural phenomena, their condition and the kind of objects. Digital numbers change in geometric correction(that is preprocessing). This change of digital numbers gave an effect on results of land-cover classification. We intend to know the influence of resampling as classifying land-cover using the image reconstructed by geometric correction in this paper. Chun-cheon basin was selected the study area having most variable land-cover pattern in North-Han river valley and made on use of RESTEC data resampled in preprocessing. Land-cover is classified as six classes of LEVEL I using maximum likelyhood classification method. We classified land-cover using the image resampled by two methods in this study. Bilinear interpolation method was most accurate in five classes except bear-land in the result of comparing each class with topographic map. We should choose the method of resampling according to the class in which we put the importance in the image resampling of geometric correction. And if we use four-season's image, we may classify more accurately in case of the confusion in case of the confusion in borders of rice field and farm.

  • Fingerprint-based verification system has been used for a very long time. Because of their well-known uniqueness and immutability, fingerprint is one of the most widely used biometric features. However, fingerprint identification system has such a critical weakness that the performance of verification is reduced drastically for a poor input fingerprint. In this paper, an image enhancement algorithm using enhanced direction and enhanced binary and aiming image is used to mitigate the problem in the preprocessing. The goal of image enhancement is to estimate the quality of input fingerprint image and to improve the clarity of ridge and valley structures of input fingerprint image. Also, a ridge orientation extraction method using index table is proposed to improve the speed of verification. It is shown by the experiments that proposed fingerprint verification system improves the minutiae extraction accuracy and performance of verification.

  • This paper proposed a versatile algorithm based on a dual-tree complex wavelet transform for intensifying the visual aspect of medical images. First, the decomposition of the input image into a high sub-band and low-sub-band image is done. Further, to improve the resolution of the resulting image, the high sub-band image is interpolated using Lanczos interpolation. Also, contrast enhancement is performed by singular value decomposition (SVD). Finally, the image reconstruction is achieved by using an inverse wavelet transform. Then, the Gaussian filter will improve the visual quality of the image. We have collected images from the hospital and the internet for quantitative and qualitative analysis. These images act as a reference image for comparing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with the existing state-of-the-art. We have divided the proposed algorithm into several stages: preprocessing, contrast enhancement, resolution enhancement, and visual quality enhancement. Both analyses show the proposed algorithm's effectiveness compared to existing methods.

  • Robust face recognition under various illumination environments is very difficult and needs to be accomplished for successful commercialization. In this paper, we propose an efficient illumination preprocessing method for face recognition. illumination preprocessing algorithm based on anisotropic smoothing is well known to be effective among illumination normalization methods but deteriorates the intensity contrast of the original image, and incurs less sharp edges. The proposed method in this paper improves the previous anisotropic smoothing based illumination normalization method so that it increases the intensity contrast and enhances the edges while diminishing effects of illumination. Due to the result of these improvements, face images preprocessed by the proposed illumination preprocessing method becomes to have more distinctive feature vectors(Gabor feature vectors). Through experiments of face recognition using Gabor jet similarity, the effectiveness of the proposed illumination preprocessing method is verified.

  • In this paper, an effective image restoration using Genetic Algorithm(GA) in wavelet transform region is proposed. First, a wavelet transform is used for decomposition of a blurred image with white Gaussian noise as a preprocessing of the proposed method. The wavelet transform decomposes a degraded image into a wavelet subband coefficient planes. In this wavelet transformed subband coefficient planes, three highest subbands is composed entirely of noise elements on a degraded image. So, these subbands are removed. And remained subbands except for the lowest subband are individually applied to GA. For the performance evaluation, the proposed method is compared with a conventional single GA algorithm and a conventional hybrid method of wavelet transform and GA for a Lenna image and a boat image. As an experimental result, the proposed algorithm is prior to a conventional methods as each PSNR 3.4dB, 1.3dB.

  • Superpixel methods are widely used in the preprocessing stage as a method to reduce computational complexity by simplifying images while maintaining the characteristics of the images in the computer vision applications. It is common to generate superpixels of similar size and shape based on the pixel values rather than considering the characteristics of the image. In this paper, we propose a method to control the sizes and shapes of generated superpixels, considering the contents of an image. The proposed method consists of two steps. The first step is to over-segment an image so that the boundary information of the image is well preserved. In the second step, generated superpixels are merged based on similarity to produce the target number of superpixels, where the shapes of superpixels are controlled by limiting the maximum size and the proposed roundness metric. Experimental results show that the proposed method preserves the boundaries of the objects in an image more accurately than the existing method.

  • Noise generated during image acquisition and transmission can negatively impact the results of image processing applications, and noise removal is typically a part of image preprocessing. Denoising techniques combined with nonlocal techniques have received significant attention in recent years, owing to the development of sophisticated hardware and image processing algorithms, much attention has been paid to; however, this approach is relatively poor for edge preservation of fine image details. To address this limitation, the current study combined a steering kernel technique with adaptive masks that can adjust the size according to the noise intensity of an image. The algorithm sets the steering weight based on a similarity comparison, allowing it to respond to edge components more effectively. The proposed algorithm was compared with existing denoising algorithms using quantitative evaluation and enlarged images. The proposed algorithm exhibited good general denoising performance and better performance in edge area processing than existing non-local techniques.
