  • It is well known that combining spatial and spectral information can improve land use classification from satellite imagery. High spatial resolution classification has a limitation when only using the spectral information due to the complex spatial arrangement of features and spectral heterogeneity within each class. Therefore, extracting the spatial information is one of the most important steps in high resolution satellite image classification. In this paper, we propose a new spatial feature extraction method. The extracted features are integrated with spectral bands to improve overall classification accuracy. The classification is achieved by applying a Support Vector Machines classifier. In order to evaluate the proposed feature extraction method, we applied our approach to KOMPSAT-2 data and compared the result with the other methods.

  • This paper describes a real-time human and robot tracking method in Intelligent Space with multi-camera networks. The proposed method detects candidates for humans and robots by using the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) feature in an image. To classify humans and robots from the candidates in real time, we apply cascaded structure to constructing a strong classifier which consists of many weak classifiers as follows: a linear support vector machine (SVM) and a radial-basis function (RBF) SVM. By using the multiple view geometry, the method estimates the 3D position of humans and robots from their 2D coordinates on image coordinate system, and tracks their positions by using stochastic approach. To test the performance of the method, humans and robots are asked to move according to given rectangular and circular paths. Experimental results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the localization error and be good for a practical application of human-centered services in the Intelligent Space.

  • High spatial resolution satellite image classification has a limitation when only using the spectral information due to the complex spatial arrangement of features and spectral heterogeneity within each class. Therefore, the extraction of the spatial information is one of the most important steps in high resolution satellite image classification. This study proposes a new spatial feature extraction method, named SSI(Shape-Size Index). SSI uses a simple region-growing based image segmentation and allocates spatial property value in each segment. The extracted feature is integrated with spectral bands to improve overall classification accuracy. The classification is achieved by applying a SVM(Support Vector Machines) classifier. In order to evaluate the proposed feature extraction method, KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird-2 data are used for experiments. It is demonstrated that proposed SSI algorithm leads to a notable increase in classification accuracy.

  • In this paper, a robust visual odometry system has been proposed and implemented in an environment with dynamic illumination. Visual odometry is based on stereo images to estimate the distance to an object. It is very difficult to realize a highly accurate and stable estimation because image quality is highly dependent on the illumination, which is a major disadvantage of visual odometry. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of low performance during the feature detection phase that is caused by illumination variations, it is suggested to determine an optimal threshold value in the image binarization and to use an adaptive threshold value for feature detection. A feature point direction and a magnitude of the motion vector that is not uniform are utilized as the features. The performance of feature detection has been improved by the RANSAC algorithm. As a result, the position of a mobile robot has been estimated using the feature points. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach has superior performance against illumination variations.

  • This paper presents the image feature extraction method and the image classification technique to select the harmful image flowed from the Internet by grade of image contents such as harmlessness, sex-appealing, harmfulness (nude), serious harmfulness (adult) by the characteristic of the image. In this paper, we suggest skin area detection technique to recognize whether an input image is harmful or not. We also propose the ROI detection algorithm that establishes region of interest to reduce some noise and extracts harmful degree effectively and defines the characteristics in the ROI area inside. And this paper suggests the multiple-SVM training method that creates the image classification model to select as 4 types of class defined above. This paper presents the multiple-SVM classification algorithm that categorizes harmful grade of input data with suggested classification model. We suggest the skin likelihood image made of the shape information of the skin area image and the color information of the skin ratio image specially. And we propose the image feature vector to use in the characteristic category at a course of traininB resizing the skin likelihood image. Finally, this paper presents the performance evaluation of experiment result, and proves the suitability of grading image using image feature classification algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose an object recognition system that can effectively find out its category, its instance name, and several attributes from the color and depth images of an object with hierarchical feature learning. In the preprocessing stage, our system transforms the depth images of the object into the surface normal vectors, which can represent the shape information of the object more precisely. In the feature learning stage, it extracts a set of patch features and image features from a pair of the color image and the surface normal vector through two-layered learning. And then the system trains a set of independent classification models with a set of labeled feature vectors and the SVM learning algorithm. Through experiments with UW RGB-D Object Dataset, we verify the performance of the proposed object recognition system.

  • An advanced form of the Partitioned Feature-based Classifier with Expertise Table(PFC-ET) is proposed in this paper. As is the case with the PFC-ET, the proposed classifier model, called Classifier Integration Model(CIM), does not use the entire feature vectors extracted from the original data in a concatenated form to classify each datum, but rather uses groups of features related to each feature vector separately. The proposed CIM utilizes a proportion of selected cluster members instead of the expertise table in PFC-ET to minimize the error in confusion table. The proposed CIM is applied to the classification problem on two data sets, Caltech data set and collected terrain data sets. When compared with PFC model and PFC-ET model. the proposed CIM shows improvements in terms of classification accuracy and post processing efforts.

  • Support vector machines(SVMs) are known as flexible and efficient classifier of multivariate observations, producing a hyperplane or hyperdimensional curved surface in multidimensional feature space that best separates training samples by known groups. As various methodological extensions are made for SVM classifiers in recent years, it becomes more difficult to understand the constructed model intuitively. The aim of this paper is to visualize various SVM classifications tuned by several parameters in reduced dimensions, so that data analysts secure the tangible image of the products that the machine made.

  • Effective fire sensing is important to protect lives and property from the disaster. In this paper, we present an intelligent visual sensing method for detecting fires based on machine learning techniques. The proposed method involves a two-step process. In the first step, fire and non-fire images are used to train a convolutional neural network (CNN), and in the next step, feature vectors consisting of 256 values obtained from the CNN are used for the learning of a support vector machine (SVM). Linear and nonlinear SVMs with different parameters are intensively tested. We found that the proposed hybrid method using an SVM with a linear kernel effectively increased the recall rate of fire image detection without compromising detection accuracy when an imbalanced dataset was used for learning. This is a major contribution of this study because recall is important, particularly in the sensing of disaster situations such as fires. In our experiments, the proposed system exhibited an accuracy of 96.9% and a recall rate of 92.9% for test image data.

  • The robust feature vector selection method for the multiple frontal face detection is proposed in this paper. The proposed feature vector for the training and classification are integrated by means, amplitude projections, and its 1D Harr wavelet of the input image. And the statistical modeling is performed both for face and nonface classes. Finally, the estimated probability density functions (PDFs) are applied for the detection of multiple frontal faces in the still image. The proposed method can handle multiple faces, partially occluded faces, and slightly posed-angle faces. And also the proposed method is very effective for low quality face images. Experimental results show that detection rate of the propose method is $98.3\%$ with three false detections on the testing data, SET3 which have 227 faces in 80 images.
