Development of the Computer Vision based Continuous 3-D Feature Extraction System via Laser Structured Lighting (레이저 구조광을 이용한 3차원 컴퓨터 시각 형상정보 연속 측정 시스템 개발)

  • A system to extract continuously the real 3-D geometric fearture information from 2-D image of an object, which is fed randomly via conveyor has been developed. Two sets of structured laser lightings were utilized. And the laser structured light projection image was acquired using the camera from the signal of the photo-sensor mounted on the conveyor. Camera coordinate calibration matrix was obtained, which transforms 2-D image coordinate information into 3-D world space coordinate using known 6 points. The maximum error after calibration showed 1.5 mm within the height range of 103mm. The correlation equation between the shift amount of the laser light and the height was generated. Height information estimated after correlation showed the maximum error of 0.4mm within the height range of 103mm. An interactive 3-D geometric feature extracting software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 under Windows system environment. Extracted 3-D geometric feature information was reconstructed into 3-D surface using MATLAB.

  • Topographical images, in case of aerial or satellite images, are usually similar in colors and textures, and complex in shapes. Thus we have to use shape features of images for efficiently retrieving a query image from topographical image databases. In this paper, we propose a shape feature extraction method which is suitable for topographical images. This method, which improves the existing projection in the Cartesian coordinates, performs the projection operation in the polar coordinates. This method extracts three attributes, namely the number of region pixels, the boundary pixel length of the region from the centroid, the number of alternations between region and background, along each angular direction of the polar coordinates. It extracts the features of complex shape objects which may have holes and disconnected regions. An advantage of our method is that it is invariant to rotation/scale/translation of images. Finally we show the advantages of our method through experiments by comparing it with CSS which is one of the most successful methods in the area of shape feature extraction

  • In this paper, we propose a content-based face retrieval system which can retrieve a face based on a facial feature region. Instead of using keyword such as a resident registration number or name for a query, the our system uses a facial image as a visual query. That is, we recognize a face based on a specific feature region including eyes, nose, and mouth. For this, we extract the feature region using the color information based on HSI color model and the edge information from wavelet transformed image, and then recognize the feature region using neural network. The proposed system is implemented on client/server environment based on Oracle DBMS for a large facial image database. In the experiment with 150 various facial images, the proposed method showed about 88.3% recognition rate.

  • This thesis presents a method for 3D modeling of facial expression from frontal and mirror-reflected multi-image. Since the proposed system uses only one camera, two mirrors, and simple mirror's property, it is robust, accurate and inexpensive. In addition, we can avoid the problem of synchronization between data among different cameras. Mirrors located near one's cheeks can reflect the side views of markers on one's face. To optimize our system, we must select feature points of face intimately associated with human's emotions. Therefore we refer to the FDP (Facial Definition Parameters) and FAP (Facial Animation Parameters) defined by MPEG-4 SNHC (Synlhetic/Natural Hybrid Coding). We put colorful dot markers on selected feature points of face to detect movement of facial deformation when subject makes variety expressions. Before computing the 3D coordinates of extracted facial feature points, we properly grouped these points according to relative part. This makes our matching process automatically. We experiment on about twenty koreans the subject of our experiment in their late twenties and early thirties. Finally, we verify the performance of the proposed method tv simulating an animation of 3D facial expression.

  • To cope actively with the changes of external environments, it is necessary that a robot should have visual feedback control (VFC) using image informations. A VFC system consists of a manipulator and camera(s). For the fixed visual system, when feature value are located at the same line, we have a problem of singular value unable to be controlled by VFC. As a solution, we may define state values of the image Jacobians, then, by making comparisons and evaluations of feature values, select available ones. This method, however, has a demerit increasing numbers of feature values. To solve the problem, moving cameras of VFC system actively, we suggest an algorithm which dose not cause singular value, and prove its availability through simulations.

3D Object Modeling and Feature Points using Octree Model (8진트리 모델을 사용한 3D 물체 모델링과 특징점)

  • The octree model, a hierarchical volume description of 3D objects, nay be utilized to generate projected images from arbitrary viewing directions, thereby providing an efficient means of the data base for 3D object recognition and other applications. We present 2D projected image and made pseudo gray image of object using octree model and multi level boundary search algorithm. We present algorithm for finding feature points of 2D and 3D image and finding matched points using geometric transformation. The algorithm is made of data base, it will be widely applied to 3D object modeling and efficient feature points application for basic 3D object research.

  • In this paper a gesture recognition system using 3D feature data is described. The system relies on a novel 3D sensor that generates a dense range mage of the scene. The main novelty of the proposed system, with respect to other 3D gesture recognition techniques, is the capability for robust recognition of complex hand postures such as those encountered in sign language alphabets. This is achieved by explicitly employing 3D hand features. Moreover, the proposed approach does not rely on colour information, and guarantees robust segmentation of the hand under various illumination conditions, and content of the scene. Several novel 3D image analysis algorithms are presented covering the complete processing chain: 3D image acquisition, arm segmentation, hand -forearm segmentation, hand pose estimation, 3D feature extraction, and gesture classification. The proposed system is tested in an application scenario involving the recognition of sign-language postures.

  • SURF algorithm is an algorithm to extract feature points and to generate descriptors from input images. It is robust to change of environment such as scale, rotation, illumination and view points. Because of these features, it is used for many image processing applications such as object recognition, constructing panorama pictures and 3D image restoration. But there is disadvantage for real time operation because many recognition algorithms such as SURF algorithm requires a lot of calculations. In this paper, we propose a design of feature extractor and descriptor generator based on SURF for high memory efficiency. The proposed design reduced a memory access and memory usage to operate in real time.

  • This Paper suggests a new feature for shot detection, using the proposed robust feature from the DC image constructed by DCT DC coefficients in the MPEG video stream, and proposes the characterizing value that reflects the characteristic of kind of video (movie, drama, news, music video etc.). The key frames are pulled out from many frames by using the local minima and maxima of differential of the value. After original frame(not do image) are reconstructed for key frame, indexing process is performed through computing parameters. Key frames that are similar to user's query image are retrieved through computing parameters. It is proved that the proposed methods are better than conventional method from experiments. The retrieval accuracy rate is so high in experiments.

An Efficient Feature Point Extraction and Comparison Method through Distorted Region Correction in 360-degree Realistic Contents

  • One of critical issues in dealing with 360-degree realistic contents is the performance degradation in searching and recognition process since they support up to 4K UHD quality and have all image angles including the front, back, left, right, top, and bottom parts of a screen. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose an efficient search and comparison method for 360-degree realistic contents. The proposed method first corrects the distortion at the less distorted regions such as front, left and right parts of the image excluding severely distorted regions such as upper and lower parts, and then it extracts feature points at the corrected region and selects the representative images through sequence classification. When the query image is inputted, the search results are provided through feature points comparison. The experimental results of the proposed method shows that it can solve the problem of performance deterioration when 360-degree realistic contents are recognized comparing with traditional 2D contents.
