Digital imaging detectors can use a variety of detection materials to convert X-ray radiation either to light or directly to electron charge. Many detectors such as amorphous silicon flat panels, CCDs, and CMOS photodiode arrays incorporate a scintillator screen to convert x-ray to light. The digital radiography systems based on semiconductor detectors, commonly referred to as flat panel detectors, are gaining popularity in the clinical & hospital. The X-ray detectors are described between a-Silicon based indirect type and a-Selenium based direct type. The DRS of detectors is used to convert the x-ray to electron hole pairs. Image processing is described by specific image features: Latitude compression, Contrast enhancement, Edge enhancement, Look up table, Noise suppression. The image features are tuned independently. The final enhancement result is a combination of all image features. The parameters are altered by using specific image features in the different several hospitals. The image in a radiological report consists of two image evaluation processes: Clinical image parameters and MTF is a descriptor of the spatial resolution of a digital imaging system. We used the edge test phantom and exposure procedure described in the IEC 61267 to obtain an edge spread function from which the MTF is calculated. We can compare image in the processing parameters to change between original and processed image data. The angle of the edge with respect to the axes of detector was varied in order to determine the MTF as a function of direction. Each MTF is integrated within the spatial resolution interval of 1.35-11.70 cycles/mm at the 50% MTF point. Each image enhancement parameters consists of edge, frequency, contrast, LUT, noise, sensitometry curve, threshold level, windows. The digital device is also shown to have good uniformity of MTF and image parameters across its modality. The measurements reported here represent a comprehensive evaluation of digital radiography system designed for use in the DRS. The results indicate that the parameter enables very good image quality in the digital radiography. Of course, the quality of image from a parameter is determined by other digital devices in addition to the proper clinical image.
This paper investigates simple gray level image enhancement technique based on Genetic Algorithms and Local Statistics. The task of GA is to adapt the parameters of local sliding masks over pixels, finding out the best parameters preserving the brightness and possibly preventing the creation of intensity artifacts in the local area of images. The algorithm is controlled by GA as to enhance the contrast and details in the images automatically according to an object fitness criterion. Results obtained in terms of subjective and objective evaluations, show the plausibility of the method suggested here.

The main purpose of image enhancement is to improve certain characteristics of an image to improve its visual quality. This paper proposes a method for image contrast enhancement that can be applied to both medical and natural images. The proposed algorithm is designed to achieve contrast enhancement while also preserving the local image details. To achieve this, the proposed method combines local image contrast preserving dynamic range compression and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE). Global gain parameters for contrast enhancement are inadequate for preserving local image details. Therefore, in the proposed method, in order to preserve local image details, local contrast enhancement at any pixel position is performed based on the corresponding local gain parameter, which is calculated according to the current pixel neighborhood edge density. Different image quality measures are used for evaluating the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides more information about the image details, which can help facilitate further image analysis.

This paper presents techniques to make image enhancement using unsharp masking. It is the technique to make image enhancement by automatically find the three parameters that makes hard to use the unsharp mask technique. To optimize the three parameters(Threshold, Amount, Radius), at first classify the pixels in the image to three groups, and then according to the groups, apply the unsharp mask to the image differently. We experimented and analyzed the rate of image enhancement by comparing images which is enhanced by human and which is enhanced by proposed technique.
This paper presents an image quality enhancement algorithm for dark image acquired under poor lighting condition. Various retinex algorithms which are human perception-based image processing methods were proposed to solve this problem. Although MSR(Multi-Scale Retinex) among these algorithm works well under most lighting condition, it shows color degradation because their separate nonlinear processing of RGB color channels. To compensate for the loss of the color, MSRCR(Multi-Scale Retinex with Color Restoration) was proposed. However, it requires high computational load and has additional parameters that need to be adjusted according to input image. In order to overcome this problem, a new retinex algorithm based on MSR is proposed in this paper. The proposed method consists of V channel MSR, saturation correction, and separate contrast enhancement process. Experimental results show that the subjective and objective image quality of the proposed method better than those of the conventional methods.

This paper proposes a new approach for enhancing digital images based on red channel information, which has the most analogous characteristics to invisible infrared rays. Specifically, a red channel in RGB space is used to analyze the image contents and improve the visual quality of the input images but it can cause unexpected problems, such as the over-enhancement of reddish input images. To resolve this problem, inter-channel correlations between the color channels were derived, and the weighting parameters for visually pleasant image fusion were estimated. Applying the parameters resulted in significant brightness as well as improvement in the dark and bright regions. Furthermore, simple contrast and color corrections were used to maintain the original contrast level and color tone. The main advantages of the proposed algorithm are 1) it can improve a given image considerably with a simple inter-channel correlation, 2) it can obtain a similar effect of using an extra infrared image, and 3) it is faster than other algorithms compared without artifacts including halo effects. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach could produce better natural images than the existing enhancement algorithms. Therefore, the proposed scheme can be a useful tool for improving the image quality in consumer imaging devices, such as compact cameras.

Image enhancement is an emerging method for analyzing the images clearer for interpretation and analysis in the spatial domain. The goal of image enhancement is to serve an input image so that the resultant image is more suited to the particular application. In this paper, a novel method is proposed based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system (FIS) using multiple fuzzy membership functions. It is observed that the shape of membership function while converting the input image into the fuzzy domain is the essential important selection. Then, a set of fuzzy If-Then rule base in fuzzy domain gives the best result in image contrast enhancement. Based on a different combination of membership function shapes, a best predictive solution can be determined which can be suitable for different types of the input image as per application requirements. Our result analysis shows that the quality attributes such as PSNR, Index of Fuzziness (IOF) parameters give different performances with a selection of numbers and different sized membership function in the fuzzy domain. To get more insight, an optimization algorithm is proposed to identify the best combination of the fuzzy membership function for best image contrast enhancement.
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effect of image enhancement of periapical radiographs according to the diagnostic task. Materials and Methods: Eighty digital intraoral radiographs were obtained from patients and classified into four groups according to the diagnostic tasks of dental caries, periodontal diseases, periapical lesions, and endodontic files. All images were enhanced differently by using five processing techniques. Three radiologists blindly compared the subjective image quality of the original images and the processed images using a 5-point scale. Results: There were significant differences between the image quality of the processed images and that of the original images (P< 0.01) in all the diagnostic task groups. Processing techniques showed significantly different efficacy according to the diagnostic task (P< 0.01). Conclusion: Image enhancement affects the image quality differently depending on the diagnostic task. And the use of optimal parameters is important for each diagnostic task.
Digital images of cultural relics captured using line scan cameras present limitations due to uneven intensity and low contrast. To address this issue, this report proposes a colour linear array image enhancement method that can maintain a constant colour. First, the colour linear array image is converted from the red-green-blue (RGB) colour space into the hue-saturation-intensity colour space, and the three components of hue, saturation, and intensity are separated. Subsequently, the hue and saturation components are held constant while the intensity component is processed using the established intensity compensation model to eliminate the uneven intensity of the image. On this basis, the contrast of the intensity component is enhanced using an improved local contrast enhancement method. Finally, the processed image is converted into the RGB colour space. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can significantly improve the visual effect of colour linear array images. Moreover, the objective quality evaluation parameters are improved compared to those determined using existing methods.

To obtain well-dehazed images at the receiver while sustaining low bit rates in the transmission pipeline, this paper investigates the effects of image dehazing methods using dehazing contrast-enhancement filters on image compression for surveillance systems. At first, this paper proposes a novel image dehazing method by using a new method of calculating the transmission function—namely, the direct denoising method. Next, we deduce the dehazing effects of the direct denoising method and image dehazing method based on dark channel prior (DCP) on image compression in terms of ringing artifacts and blocking artifacts. It can be concluded that the direct denoising method performs better than the DCP method for decompressed (reconstructed) images. We also improve the direct denoising method to obtain more desirable dehazed images with higher contrast, using the saliency map as the guidance image to modify the transmission function. Finally, we adjust the parameters of dehazing contrast-enhancement filters to obtain a corresponding composite peak signal-to-noise ratio (CPSNR) and blind image quality assessment (BIQA) of the decompressed images. Experimental results show that different filters have different effects on image compression. Moreover, our proposed dehazing method can strike a balance between image dehazing and image compression.
