  • In this paper, we propose an image contrast enhancement algorithm for an LCD TV. The proposed algorithm consists of two processes: the image segmentation process and the tone curve control process. The first process uses an automatic threshold technique to decompose an input image into two regions and then utilizes a hierarchical structure for real-time processing. The second process generates a gray level tone curve for contrast enhancement using a weighted sum of average tone curves for two segmented regions. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional contrast enhancement methods for an LCD TV.

  • The output image of the uncooled thermal infrared camera is difficult the identification of target because of the limited dynamic range and the various noises. Retinex algorithm based on the theory of the human visual perception is known to be effective contrast enhancement technique. However, the image quality is insufficient when it is adopted to the narrow dynamic range image as the infrared image. In this paper, we propose the revised retinex algorithm to enhance the contrast of the infrared image. To improve the contrast enhancement performance, we designed the new dynamic range compression function instead of log function. To reduce the noise and compensate the loss of edge, we added the contrast compensation procedure in the MSR image generation process. According to the output picture comparing and numerical analysis, the proposed algorithm shows the better contrast enhancement performance and the more suitable method for the infrared image enhancement.

  • In this paper, we have proposed the contrast control method using brightness preserving on the FPD(Flat Panel Display). The proposed algorithms consist of three blocks: the contrast enhancement, the white-level-expander, and the black-level-expander. The proposed method has employed probability density function in order to control the brightness of the image changed extremely. In order for real-time processing, we have calculated cumulative density function using the linear approximation method. The image histogram and image quality were compared with the conventional image enhancement algorithms. The proposed methods have been used in display devices that need image enhancement such as LCD TV, PDP, and FPD.

  • Digital images of cultural relics captured using line scan cameras present limitations due to uneven intensity and low contrast. To address this issue, this report proposes a colour linear array image enhancement method that can maintain a constant colour. First, the colour linear array image is converted from the red-green-blue (RGB) colour space into the hue-saturation-intensity colour space, and the three components of hue, saturation, and intensity are separated. Subsequently, the hue and saturation components are held constant while the intensity component is processed using the established intensity compensation model to eliminate the uneven intensity of the image. On this basis, the contrast of the intensity component is enhanced using an improved local contrast enhancement method. Finally, the processed image is converted into the RGB colour space. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can significantly improve the visual effect of colour linear array images. Moreover, the objective quality evaluation parameters are improved compared to those determined using existing methods.

  • This paper proposes a contrast enhancement technique which stretches the intensity surfaces of image to improve the quality of the digital photos. The proposed method enhances the contrast of image by stretching the intensity surface of the original image to the maximum range of the output image in proportion to the distances between the original intensity surface and upper, lower intensity surface, respectively. The upper and lower intensity surfaces are generated from the original intensity surface by gaussian smoothing. In the experiments, digital color images in a variety of illumination conditions were used and the proposed method was compared with other several existed image enhancement algorithms, which are histogram stretching, surface stretching, histogram equalization, gamma correction and retinex. It was proved that the experimental results were more natural visually without deterioration of gradation.

  • In this paper, we propose an image enhancement method based on Multi-Scale Retinex theory that designs Unsharp Masking Filter (UMF) and emphasizes the contrast ratio adaptively. Unsharp Masking (UM) technique emphasizes image sharpness and improves contrast ratio by adding high frequency component to the original image. The high frequency component is obtained by differentiating between original image and low frequency image. In this paper, we present how to design an UMF kernel and to adaptively apply it to increase the contrast ratio according to multi-scale retinex theory which resembles human visual system. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better quantitative performance indexes such as PSNR, ambe & SSIM and better qualitative feature like halo artifact suppression.

  • The contrast enhancement techniques based on Laplacian pyramid image fusion have a benefit that they can faithfully describe the image information because they combine the multiple resource images by selecting the desired pixel in each image. However, they also have some problem that the output image may contain noise, because the methods evaluate the visual information on the basis of each pixel. In this paper, an improved contrast enhancement method, which effectively suppresses the noise, using image fusion is proposed. The proposed method combines the resource images by making Laplacian pyramids generated from weight maps, which are produced by measuring the difference between the block-based local well exposedness and local homogeneity for each resource image. We showed the proposed method could produce less noisy images compared to the conventional techniques in the test for various images.

  • In case of contrast of the image enhancement by using the conventional histogram equalization, over-enhancement, false contouring and distortion such as the details disappearance of the image occurs due to the excessive brightness change. Especially, these distortion appears when the brightness distribution is concentrated in a particular brightness level. In order to solve these problems, improved histogram equalization methods to transform the input histogram by clipping using threshold have been proposed, but contrast enhancement effect is reduced because it does not consider the characteristics of the input image's histogram to apply the same threshold for the entire histogram, and unnatural image is obtained because it does not retain the characteristics of the image. In this paper, to solve the problems of existing methods, we propose new equalization method that suppress excessive brightness changes by applying to the differential compression according to the histogram frequency, and maintain the characteristics of the input image. In addition, we propose a more effectively method to improve contrast by controlling the strength of the compression ratio depending on the characteristics of the input image.

  • In this paper, we propose a contrast enhancement algorithm using guided image filter (GIF). The GIF is used to divide an HDR image into a base layer and a detail layer. The energy scale of base layer determinate the darkness and brightness of the image. However, the detail information in the base layer is difficult to be displayed because of the high brightness and clusters of low brightness. We propose a contrast enhancement method by adjusting the gray level of base layer by subtracting the mean value of itself. It is combined with the detail layer to preserve the detail information. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in detail preservation and contrast enhancement.

  • Histogram Equalization (HE) is a very popular technique for enhancing the contrast of an image. HE stretches the dynamic range of an image using the cumulative distribution function of a given input image, therefore improving its contrast. However, HE has a well-known problem : when HE is applied for the contrast enhancement, there is a significant change in brightness. To resolve this problem, we propose An Adaptive Contrast Enhancement Algorithm using Subhistogram Area-Ratioed Histogram Redistribution, a new method that helps reduce excessive contrast enhancement. This proposed algorithm redistributes the dynamic range of an input image using its mean luminance value and the ratio of sub-histogram area. Experimental results show that by this redistribution, the significant change in brightness is reduced effectively and the output image is able to preserve the naturalness of an original image even if it has a poor histogram distribution.
