  • In this paper, a free vibration analysis of functionally graded beam made of porous material is presented. The material properties are supposed to vary along the thickness direction of the beam according to the rule of mixture, which is modified to approximate the material properties with the porosity phases. For this purpose, a new displacement field based on refined shear deformation theory is implemented. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. Based on the present refined shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. The rule of mixture is modified to describe and approximate material properties of the FG beams with porosity phases. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions. Illustrative examples are given also to show the effects of varying gradients, porosity volume fraction, aspect ratios, and thickness to length ratios on the free vibration of the FG beams.

  • Structural robustness has become an important design variable. However, based on the existing definitions of structural robustness it is often difficult to analyse and evaluate structural robustness, and sometimes not efficient since they mix structural robustness with several other structural variables. This paper concerns the development of a new structural robustness definition, and structural robustness and structural fragility indices. The basis for the development of the new indices is the analysis of the damage energy of structural systems for a given hazard scenario and involves a criterion to define an "unavoidable collapse" state. Illustrative examples are given detailing the steps and calculations needed to obtain values for both the structural robustness and the structural fragility indices. Finally, this paper presents the main advantages of the newly proposed definition and indices for the structural risk analysis over existing traditional methods.

  • This paper presents analytical solutions for skewed thick plates under transverse loading that have previously been unreported in the literature. The thick plate solution is obtained in a framework of an oblique coordinate system. The governing equation is first derived in the oblique coordinate system, and the solution is obtained using deflection and rotation as partial derivatives of a potential function developed in this research. The solution technique is applied to three illustrative application examples, and the results are compared with numerical solutions in the literature and those derived from the commercial finite element analysis package ANSYS 11. These results are in excellent agreement. The present solution may also be used to model skewed structures such as skewed bridges, to facilitate efficient routine design or evaluation analyses, and to form special elements for finite element analysis. At the same time, the analytical solution developed in this research could be used to develop methods to address post-buckling and dynamic problems.

  • In this paper, a refined exponential shear deformation theory for free vibration analysis of functionally graded beam with considering porosities that may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication. For this purpose, a new displacement field based on refined shear deformation theory is implemented. Based on the present refined shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. • This paper reports recent developments concerning the application of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to the structural analysis of steel-concrete composite bridges. The potential of GBT-based semi-analytical or finite element-based analyses in this field is illustrated/demonstrated by showing that both accurate and computationally efficient solutions may be achieved for a wide range of structural problems, namely those associated with the bridge (i) linear (first-order) static, (ii) vibration and (iii) lateral-torsional-distortional buckling behaviours. Several illustrative examples are presented, which concern bridges with two distinct cross-sections: (i) twin box girder and (ii) twin I-girder. Allowance is also made for the presence of discrete box diaphragms and both shear lag and shear connection flexibility effects.

  • This paper considers a topological optimization of a computer network design with a cost constraint. The objective is to find the topological layout of links, at maximal reliability, under the constraint that the network cost is less or equal than a given level of budget. This problem is known to be NP-hard. To efficiently solve the problem, a genetic approach is proposed. Two illustrative examples are used to explain and test the proposed approach. Experimental results show evidence that the proposed approach performs more efficiently for finding a good solution or near optimal solution in comparison with a simulated annealing method.

  • This paper discusses a scheduling problem on object-oriented developments over multiple teams with limited resources in matrix organization. The objective of the problem is to minimize the makespan of overall projects. There are tangible and intangible advantages such as efficient resource share, improvement of productivity, development efforts and cost reduction, etc. by dispatching resources properly to the development teams. Traditionally, the project scheduling has been done with a manager's intuition or heuristic. We present a scheduling model with illustrative examples, stochastic search approach, and apply a variety of problems generated randomly to the approach. The results are analysed.

  • Presented in this paper is a new fast and robust algorithm generating NC tool path for 2D pockets with islands. The input shapes are composed of line segments and circular arcs. The algorithm has two steps: creation of successive offset loops and linking the loops to a tool path. A modified pairwise technique is developed in order to speed up and stabilize the offset process, and the linking algorithm is focused on avoiding thin-wall cutting and minimizing tool retractions. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in C++ and some illustrative examples are presented to show the practical strength of the algorithm.

  • This paper considers the cost analysis from the manufacturer's point of view for renewing replacement and non-renewing repair warranty(RRNRW) of a repairable system. To do so, we consider the renewing replacement and non-renewing repair warranty, which is proposed by Jung(2011). To analysis the expected warranty cost from the manufacturer's perspective for renewing replacement and non-renewing warranty, we obtain the expected total warranty cost and the expected warranty length which are very important information for the manufacturer. Finally, the numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

  • An analysis of the annual frequency of collapse(AF) is performed for each bridge pier exposed to ship collision. AF is computed for each bridge component and vessel classification. The summation of AFs computed over all of the vessel classification intervals for a specific component should equal the annual frequency of collapse of the component. The designer should use judgment in developing a distribution of the vessel frequency data based on discrete groupings or categories of vessel size by DWT. In the present study the effect of vessel classification on the annual frequency of collapse in the ship collision risk assessment is investigated by illustrative numerical examples based on the vessel frequency data of the domestic harbor. The DWT interval for larger vessels has more effect on the ship collision risk. Therefore the expert judgement in determining the larger DWT interval is required because the design impact lateral resistances of bridge components depend on the ship collision risk.
