  • In this paper, we propose a novel saliency detection framework based on illumination invariant features to improve the accuracy of the saliency detection under the different light conditions. The proposed algorithm is divided into three steps. First, we extract the illuminant invariant features to reduce the effect of the illumination based on the local sensitive histograms. Second, a preliminary saliency map is obtained in the CIE Lab color space. Last, we use the region growing method to fuse the illuminant invariant features and the preliminary saliency map into a new framework. In addition, we integrate the information of spatial distinctness since the saliency objects are usually compact. The experiments on the benchmark dataset show that the proposed saliency detection framework outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of different illuminants in the images.

  • We propose a hybrid face recognition to deal with illumination variation. For this, we extract discriminant features by using the different illumination invariant feature extraction methods. In order to utilize both advantages of each method, we evaluate the discriminant power of each feature by using the discriminant distance and then construct a composite feature with only the features that contain a large amount of discriminative information. The experimental results for the Multi-PIE, Yale B, AR and yale databases show that the proposed method outperforms an individual illumination invariant feature extraction method for all the databases.

  • In this paper, we propose an object recognition technique for implementing marker less augmented reality. Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is used for finding the local features from object images. These features are invariant to scale, rotation, translation, and partially invariant to illumination changes. Extracted Features are distinct and have matched with different image features in the scene. If the trained image is properly matched, then it is expected to find object in scene. In this paper, an object is found from a scene by matching the template images that can be generated from the first frame of the scene. Experimental results of object recognition for 4 kinds of objects showed that the proposed technique has a good performance.

  • A correspondence matching is one of the important tasks in computer vision, and it is not easy to find corresponding points in variable environment where a scale, rotation, view point and illumination are changed. A SURF(Speeded Up Robust Features) algorithm have been widely used to solve the problem of the correspondence matching because it is faster than SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) with closely maintaining the matching performance. However, because SURF considers only gray image and local geometric information, it is difficult to match corresponding points on the image where similar local patterns are scattered. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an extended SURF algorithm that uses the invariant color and global geometric information. The proposed algorithm can improves the matching performance since the color information and global geometric information is used to discriminate similar patterns. In this paper, the superiority of the proposed algorithm is proved by experiments that it is compared with conventional methods on the image where an illumination and a view point are changed and similar patterns exist.

  • The application of object recognition technology has been increased with a growing need to introduce automated system in industry. However, object transformed by noises and shadows appeared from illumination causes challenge problem in object detection and recognition. In this paper, an illumination invariant object detection using a DoG filter and adaptive threshold is proposed that reduces noises and shadows effects and reserves geometry features of object. And also, rotation invariant object recognition is proposed that has trained with neural network using classes categorized by object type and rotation angle. The simulation has been processed to evaluate feasibility of the proposed method that shows the accuracy of 99.86% and the matching speed of 0.03 seconds on ETRI database, which has 16,848 object images that has obtained in various lighting environment.

  • This paper proposes a traffic sign recognition method in real road environments. The video stream in driving environments has two different characteristics compared to a general object video stream. First, the number of traffic sign types is limited and their shapes are mostly simple. Second, the camera cannot take clear pictures in the road scenes since there are many illumination changes and weather conditions are continuously changing. In this paper, we improve a modified census transform(MCT) to extract features effectively from the road scenes that have many illumination changes. The extracted features are collected by histograms and are transformed by the dense descriptors into very high dimensional vectors. Then, the high dimensional descriptors are encoded into a low dimensional feature vector by Fisher-vector coding and Gaussian Mixture Model. The proposed method shows illumination invariant detection and recognition, and the performance is sufficient to detect and recognize traffic signs in real-time with high accuracy.

  • With the remarkable growth in rich media in recent years, people are increasingly exposed to visual information from the environment. Visual information continues to play a vital role in rich media because people's real interests lie in dynamic information. This paper proposes a novel discrete dynamic swarm optimization (DDSO) algorithm for video object tracking using invariant features. The proposed approach is designed to track objects more robustly than other traditional algorithms in terms of illumination changes, background noise, and occlusions. DDSO is integrated with a matching procedure to eliminate inappropriate feature points geographically. The proposed novel fitness function can aid in excluding the influence of some noisy mismatched feature points. The test results showed that our approach can overcome changes in illumination, background noise, and occlusions more effectively than other traditional methods, including color-tracking and invariant feature-tracking methods.

  • Object detection and tracking have become one of the most active research areas in the past few years, and play an important role in computer vision applications over our daily life. Many tracking techniques are proposed, and Camshift is an effective algorithm for real time dynamic object tracking, which uses only color features, so that the algorithm is sensitive to illumination and some other environmental elements. This paper presents and implements an effective moving object detection and tracking to reduce the influence of illumination interference, which improve the performance of tracking under similar color background. The implemented prototype system recognizes object using invariant features, and reduces the dimension of feature descriptor to rectify the problems. The experimental result shows that that the system is superior to the existing methods in processing time, and maintains better problem ratios in various environments.

  • In recent years, Tracking-Learning-Detection(TLD) system has been widely used as a detection and tracking algorithm for vision sensors. While conventional algorithms are vulnerable to occlusion, and changes in illumination and appearances, TLD system is capable of robust tracking by conducting tracking, detection, and learning in real time. However, the detection and tracking algorithms of TLD system utilize rotation-variant features, and the margin of tracking error becomes greater when an object makes a full out-of-plane rotation. Thus, we propose a rotation-invariant TLD system(RI-TLD). we propose a simplified average orientation histogram and rotation matrix for a rotation inference algorithm. Experimental results with various tracking tests demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed system.

이러한 문제점을 보완하기 위해 SURF(Scale Invariant Feature Transform), SIFT(Speed up Robust Features) 등의 알고리즘이 제안 되었지만, 여전히 조명변화에 불안정하고 정확하지 못한 성능을 보인다.
