In this paper a catadioptric laser-irradiation-precision test system is designed, to achieve a high-precision laser-irradiation-accuracy test. In this system, we adopt the method of imaging the entire target surface at a certain distance to realize the measurement of laser-irradiation precision. The method possesses the advantages of convenient operation, high sensitivity, and good stability. To meet the test accuracy requirement of 100 mm/km (0.01%), the coma, field curvature, and distortion over the entire field of view should be eliminated from the optical system's design. Taking into account the whole length of the tube and the influence of stray light on the structure type, a catadioptric system with a hood added near the primary imaging surface is designed. After optimization using the ZEMAX software, the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the designed optical system is 0.6 at 30 lp/mm, the full-field-of-view distortion is better than 0.18%, and the energy concentration in the 10-㎛-radius surrounding circle reaches about 90%. The illumination-accuracy test results show that the measurement accuracy of the radiation hit rate is better than 50 mm when the test distance is 1 km, which is better than the requirement of 100 mm/km for the laser-irradiation-accuracy test.

Various techniques to measure the three-dimensional (3D) surface profile of a 3D micro- or nanostructure have been proposed. However, it is difficult to apply such techniques directly to industrial uses because most of them are relatively slow, unreliable, and expensive. The HiLo optical imaging technique, which was recently introduced in the field of fluorescence imaging, is a promising wide-field imaging technique capable of high-speed imaging with a simple optical configuration. It has not been used in measuring a 3D surface profile although confocal microscopy originally developed for fluorescence imaging has been adapted to the field of 3D optical measurement for a long time. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, the HiLo optical imaging technique for measuring a 3D surface profile is proposed for the first time. Its optical configuration and algorithm for a precisely detecting surface position are designed, optimized, and implemented. Optical performance for several 3D microscale structures is evaluated, and it is confirmed that the capability of measuring a 3D surface profile with HiLo optical imaging technique is comparable to that with confocal microscopy.

An elliptical zone plate (EZP) array is important in off-axis optical systems because it provides two advantages. First, the residual beam and the main source are not focused in the same direction and second, the light from the observation plane is not reflected back towards the beam source. However, the fill factor of the previous EZP array was about 76% which was a little low. Hence, this EZP array could not collect the maximum amount of illumination light, which affected the overall optical performance of the lens array. In this study, we propose a new EZP array design with a 97.5% fill factor used in off-axis imaging system for enhancement of brightness and contrast. Then, direct laser lithography was used to fabricate the high fill factor EZP array by moving the XY linear stage of the system in a zigzag motion. The imaging properties of the proposed EZP array were experimentally verified at the focal plane and compared with the previous model.
Modern distance sensing methods employ various measurement principles, including triangulation, time-of-flight, confocal, interferometric and frequency comb. Among them, the triangulation method, with a laser light source and an image sensor, is widely used in low-cost applications. We developed an omnidirectional two-dimensional (2D) distance sensor based on the triangulation principle for indoor floor mapping applications. The sensor has a range of 150-1500 mm with a relative resolution better than 4% over the range and 1% at 1 meter distance. It rotationally scans a compact one-dimensional (1D) distance sensor, composed of a near infrared (NIR) laser diode, a folding mirror, an imaging lens, and an image detector. We designed the sensor layout and configuration to satisfy the required measurement range and resolution, selecting easily available components in a special effort to reduce cost. We built a prototype and tested it with seven representative indoor wall specimens (white wallpaper, gray wallpaper, black wallpaper, furniture wood, black leather, brown leather, and white plastic) in a typical indoor illuminated condition, 200 lux, on a floor under ceiling mounted fluorescent lamps. We confirmed the proposed sensor provided reliable distance reading of all the specimens over the required measurement range (150-1500 mm) with a measurement resolution of 4% overall and 1% at 1 meter, regardless of illumination conditions.
The pixel size in high-resolution complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors continues to shrink due to chip size limitations. However, the pixel pitch's miniaturization causes deterioration of optical performance. As one solution, a quad color filter (CF) array with pixel binning has been developed to enhance sensitivity. For high sensitivity, the microlens structure also needs to be optimized as the CF arrays change. In this paper, the covered microlens, which consist of four microlenses covered by one large microlens, are proposed for the quad CF array in the backside illumination pixel structure. To evaluate the optical performance, the suggested microlens structure was simulated from 0.5 ㎛ to 1.0 ㎛ pixels at the center and edge of the sensors. Moreover, all pixel structures were compared with and without in-pixel deep trench isolation (DTI), which works to distribute incident light uniformly into each photodiode. The suggested structure was evaluated with an optical simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method for numerical analysis of the optical characteristics. Compared to the conventional microlens, the suggested microlens show 29.1% and 33.9% maximum enhancement of sensitivity at the center and edge of the sensor, respectively. Therefore, the covered microlens demonstrated the highly sensitive image sensor with a quad CF array.

Providing marine signal lanterns with advantages of little weight as well as large aperture, a Fresnel lens has been adopted to transfer the beam from the lanterns up to 10 nautical miles (18.53 km). A Fresnel lens with the diameter of 250 mm and 300 mm was designed by a lens design program and optimized by adjusting the groove parameters of the lens. The angular luminous intensity distribution (ALID) of this lens was calculated by using an illumination analysis program considering the ALID of a light bulb. At the best alignment of the bulb, the maximum luminous intensities (MLI) of the lantern were 1000 cd (in the case of 250 mm diameter) and 1300 cd (in the case of 300 mm diameter). These are more than the critical value of 720 cd that is the Korean Standard of MLI for the marine lantern. The ALID was investigated as a function of misalignment from the lens focus to determine the tolerance of the alignment ranges.
It is well known that the maximum amplitude of accommodation decreases with increasing age.(Presbyopia). With single vision lenses presbyopia can be corrected only for one viewing distance. With progressive power lenses presbyopia can be corrected for all viewing distances. But there are some other changes in the visual system with age which can not be corrected by spectacle lenses. Pupillary diameter decreases and the light transmission of the ocular media decreases. Therefore old people need more light, they need better illumination. Cone density in the retina decreases, this is only one example for changes in the sensory system. These changes in the visual system cause changes in visual functions. At the age of 80 visual acuity has decreased to half. Contrast sensitivity for gratings decreases mainly for high spatial frequencies very important is the increase of stray light in the ocular media and therefore the increase of glare. Veiling luminance increases by a multiple of approximately 4, Dark adaptation gets slower and light sensitivity is approximately 2 log units (factor 100) less when the eye is completely dark adapted. Also colour vision gets worse, especially at low luminances. Elderly people have problems with visual tasks which require divided attention between foveal and peripheral vision. An example is the measurement of the useful field of view. This useful field of view be expanded (improved) by visual training.

Purpose: Recently incidence of VDT syndrome has gradually increased as extensive use of computers. VDT syndrome reported by VDT workers include musculoskeletal disorder, neuropsychiatric disoders and eye symptoms such as eye strain, tired eyes, irritation and blurred vision. The environmental factors of VDT syndrome include electromagnetic waves, size, brightness and lighting of computer screen, height of a monitor and a worktable, working hours, kind of task, distance between screen and workers, indoor humidity and temperature, indoor air contamination and ventilation. In this study, we investigated the environmental factors related to body symptoms and health effects included in VDT syndrome. Methods: Study subjects were total 120 persons (54 male, 66 female) with age from 19 to 28. We surveyed the body symptoms and physical discomfort when doing an activity in a short distance such as reading book or paper, computer work. The questionnaire included main body symptoms, self-consciousness symptoms of eye, satisfaction of working environment, pain of the wrist when using keyboard and mouse. Results: Most of people (70%) felt physical pain from long time work of computer, paper, electrical apparatus. They mainly complained pain of neck and low back (57.1%), eye (45.2%) and head (31%). With the environmental factors, 78.3% of the subjects complaint pain of eye from inappropriate illumination. Most of the symptoms included 'eye fatigue'(38.3%), 'dryness of eye'(31.9%) and 'blurred vision'(23.7%). Subjects in this study complained discomfort of their chairs and most of them experienced pain in the wrist when using keyboard or mouse. Conclusions: When people use electrical apparatus or work with paper, people would get their eye fatigue and feeling of physical fatigue because of not harmonizing various environmental factors such as light, space, posture, worktable with theirselves. Therefore, workers should develop preventive method such as self-control of adequate break time to avoid fatigue while VDT work. Work environment should be changed to ergonomic design for optimal visual environment to prevent musculoskeletal disorder through constant research.
We have performed modeling and simulations of optical characteristics for a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) color filter. Berreman's $4{\times}4$ matrix method was used for the calculation of reflectance spectra of the CLC color filter with respect to the incident angle. The results were employed as input parameters for a user-defined coating property of an illumination design software based on the ray-tracing method, LightTools. Color shift characteristics of a planar transmission-type CLC color filter were simulated using LightTools. The results were compared with the results obtained with Berreman's $4{\times}4$ matrix method. It was found that color shift characteristics of the CLC color filter could be simulated to a reasonable accuracy when the reflectance spectra with less than 5 degrees of incremental incidence-angle were used as the input data for the user-defined coating property of LightTools. We have simulated color shift characteristics of a reflection-type CLC color filter having hemi-spherical patterns. The simulation method reported in this paper has been found to be also used for a non-planar CLC color filter structure.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility and validity of using a pupillometer to assess patients with acute brain lesions. Methods : Pupillary examinations using an automated pupillometer ($NeurOptics^{(R)}NPi^{TM}$-100 Pupillometer) were performed every 4 hours and were simultaneously assessed using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and for intracranial pressure (ICP), from admission to discharge or expire in neuro-intensive care unit (NICU). Manual pupillary examinations were also recorded for comparison. By comparing these data, we evaluated the validity of using automated pupillometers to predict clinical outcomes. Results : The mean values of the Neurologic Pupillary index (NPi) were different in the groups examined manually. The GCS correlated well with NPi values, especially in severe brain injury patients (GCS below 9). However, the NPi values were weakly correlated with intracranial pressure (ICP) when the ICP was lower than 30 cm $H_2O$. The NPi value was not affected by age or intensity of illumination. In patients with a "poor" prognosis who had a Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) of 1 or 2, the mean initial NPi score was $0.88{\pm}1.68$, whereas the value was $3.89{\pm}0.97$ in patients with a "favorable" prognosis who had a GOS greater than 2 (p<0.001). For predicting clinical outcomes, the initial NPi value of 3.4 had the highest sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion : An automated pupillometer can serve as a simple and useful tool for the accurate measurement of pupillary reactivity in patients with acute brain lesions.
