  • This study was carried to investigate the effect of illite addition on the growth, bioactive components and volatile compounds of leaf on Saururus chinensis Baill cultivation in greenhouse. Illite addition on Saururus chinensis Baill cultivation resulted no significant effects on the aerial part. However, the root part was highest in 5% illite addition group. Crude oil and ash amount increased as illite additives was increased. Ca of inorganics and free sugars contents were highest in 5% and 20% illite addition, respectively. Hyperoside and isoquercetin of available component on leaf were highest in 5% illite addition group, 4.02mg/g and 4.31mg/g, respectively. The volatile compounds in Saururus chinensis Baill leaf cultured with illite addition amounts were isolated by solid-phase microextraction fiber (polydimethysiloxane $65{\mu}m$) and identifed by gas chromatogtaphy mass spectrometry. As the results, the 22 volatile compounds were identified from in Saururus chinensis Baill leaf and major volatile compounds were the ${\alpha}$-cadinol (18.50%), myristicin (16.46%), methyl-9-methyl-tetradecanoate (10.22%), and ${\gamma}$-muurolene (9.75%). Especially, the content of ${\alpha}$-cadinol was highest in 5% illite addition group and ${\gamma}$-muurolene on overall illite addition group was lower than no addition group.

  • In this study, illite, an environmental friendly, low cost, and high aspect ratio additive, was used to improve flame retardant property of epoxy and it was fluorinated to enhance dispersion of hydrophilic illite in hydrophobic epoxy by introducing hydrophobic functional groups. Fluorination of illite enhanced illite dispersion ill epoxy solution before curing and that in the complex after curing. These enhanced dispersions were attributed to the increased affinity of illite to hydrophobic epoxy solution induced by fluorination of illite and the increased intercalation of epoxy polymer or exfoliation of illite by epoxy curing. Hence, limited oxygen index(LOI) of fluorinated illite/epoxy complex increased by 24%, compared to that of epoxy, suggesting that the preparation of fluorinated illite/epoxy complex increased their flame retardant properties.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the distribution and compositions of clay mineral and to replenish the soil classification system in Korea. Soil layer samples were collected from 26 residuum and colluvium soil series out of 390 soil series in Korea, and then analyzed for soil physical and chemical characteristics, mineral and chemical compositions of clay in B horizon soils. Major clay minerals of residuum and colluvium were illite and chlorite in soils originated from the sedimentary rock such as limestone, shale, sandstone and conglomerate; quartz and kaolin in soils originated from rhyolite, neogene deposits, porphyry and tuff; and kaolin and quartz in the soils originated from granite, granite gneiss and anorthosite. Clay minerals in Korean soils were divided into 4 groups: mixed mineral group(MIX) mainly contained with illite, kaolin and vemiculite; kaolin group(KA) with kaolin and illite; chlorite group(CH) with chlorite and illite; and smectite group(SM) with kaolin, illite and smectite. The most predominant clay mineral group was kaolin group(KA) with kaolin and illite; an mixed mineral group(MIX) with illite, kaolin and vemiculite. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay was low in the soils mainly composed with MIX and KA groups and silica-alumina molar ratio of clay was high in the soils composed with SM group

  • Recently, many attention have been focused on illite as a material for the well-being industry. Illite contains various kinds of iron bearing materials and they restrict their usage. In this study, Fe impurities in the illite produced in Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do were characterized and their removal experiments were performed. According to the characterization of illite raw ore, it contained 1.54 wt.%$Fe_2O_3$ due to the existence of iron oxide($Fe_2O_3$) and pyrite($FeS_2$). The raw ore was crushed into 3 mm or less using cone crusher and then ground by rod mill for the liberation of impurity mineral. For the removal of iron bearing minerals, an acid treatment, a flotation, a magnetic separation, and a flotation combined with magnetic separator were performed respectively. When the illite raw ore was treated with magnetic separation and various kinds of acid, 1.54wt.%. $Fe_2O_3$ content was reduced to 0.78 and 1.0 wt.%, respectively. On the other hand $Fe_2O_3$ content was reduced to be 0.52 wt.% after flotation. These results indicate that iron bearing minerals cannot be reduced below 0.3wt.%$Fe_2O_3$. However, combination of magnetic separation and flotation enable us to get 0.24wt.% of illite concentrate. It is concluded that, for the refinement of illite from Yeongdong-gun, the flotation combined with magnetic separation is good for high purity illite.

  • In this study, illite was size-reduced using a wet-ball-milling treatment to improve its dispersion. Changes in illite particle size, size distribution, and dispersion characteristics after varying the treatment period were investigated. And the dispersion and dispersion stability of illite solution after 2 h wet ball milling treatment with different pH conditions were also evaluated. The illite particle size significantly decreased as the treatment time increased and the size reduction effect of wet ball milling deteriorated above 2 h treatment time. In addition, illite particle size was more evenly distributed as the treatment time increased. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that no crystal structural changes of illite were induced, but the characteristic peak of illite the weaker due to the size reduction and exfoliation, as the treatment time increased. Zeta potential analysis showed that the illite dispersion improved, as the treatment time increased. The illite wet-ball-mill treated at pH 2 had the lowest dispersion stability. Illite dispersion and dispersion stability increased as pH increased, due to the increase in surface ionization. Hence, the results showed that as the treatment time increased, the illite particle size decreased, and dispersion and dispersion stability improved due to the increase in surface energy and repulsion force between particles.

  • The 1M and $2M_1$ stacking sequences are the most frequently encountered in the illite species among the possible 6 polytypes. The $1M_d$, derived from the 1M polytype which exhibits a variable degree of disorder in the stacking sequence, is also observed in illite samples. In this paper, the author introduces and reviews the theoretical background of the quantitative analysis method of illite polytypes, and considers the possibility to determine the fault age and its reactivation age using K/Ar age-dating based on the quantification of illite polytypes in the fault system. For the increase of the accuracy and precision of the illite age analysis method, the occurrence, identification, and mineralogical characterization of illite polytypes should be defined in detail. The broadening effect of (hkl) reflections, due to disordering of 1M polytype and the presence of I/S minerals with expandability, are also considered as the main parameters controlling the quantification of illite polytypes using the WILDFIRE(C)simulation.

  • Illite is a common mineral that forms readily from feldspar and mica via hydrothermal alteration and exhibits various characteristics depending on the degree of hydrothermal alteration. To ensure continued mining of high-quality illite ore, it is crucial to understand the illitization. Thus, this study collected ores from two illite ore deposit and their surrounding alteration zones in Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, a significant source of illite in the Republic of Korea, to determine the constituent mineral contents and textural characteristics. Polarized light microscopy analyses revealed that the illite ore deposit were highly illitized with little remaining textural characteristics of the parent mica schist, and only some quartz was present. The ore zone contained illite, muscovite, quartz, and feldspar, with illitization primarily occurring around feldspar and quartz. X-ray diffraction analyses identified that the content of illite/muscovite was approximately 50-75 wt.%, with a maximum of 75 wt.%. Additionally, X-ray fluorescence analyses indicated a linear increase in K2O content with increasing illite content, showing the highest correlation among the major components analyzed. It is suggested that the illite in the Yeongdong area results from feldspar and quartz alteration by hydrothermal fluids along the fault, with illitization of feldspar occurring before that of quartz. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of high-quality illite ore deposit in Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do.

  • The potential of petroleum generation was investigated by clay mineralogical changes of illite-smectite on the sedimentary basins: Tertiary Pohang basin and Cretaceouls Gyeongsang basin on land, and offshore basins east and west of Korea. Only disordered illite-smectite mixed layer minerals occur in the Pohang sediment, where petroleum generation cannot be expected due to low temperatures below $100^{\circ}C$. By contrast, the Gyeongsang basin is characterized by the occurrence of illite and high temperatures above $200^{\circ}C$ which are obtained by illite crystallinity. The high temperatures indicate that the Gyeongsang sediment ha, already passed through the oil generation stage. The change of disordered illite-smectite to R-l ordered illite-smectite is shown in the sediment of the East Sea continental shelf area at a depth of 2,500 m. Therefore, the oil generation can be expected in the sediments below the depth of 2,500 m. The sequential change of disordered illite-smectie to R=3 ordered illite-smectite through R=l ordered illite-smectite occurs in the sediments of West Sea continental shelf area with burial depth which shows the favorable condition for oil and gas generation. The temperatures of sediments measured by illite-smectite indicate that hydrocarbon potential is very low in the onland basins but high in the continental shelf areas.

  • In this work, the thermal, antibiotic properties and far-infrared emissivity of fluorinated illite embedded polypropylene non-woven fibers (f-illite/PP fibers) were investigated in the presence of 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt% illite powders. The thermal properties of f-illite/PP fibers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their antibiotic properties were examined by Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae test. Their far-infrared emissivity was also investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. From the experimental results, thermal, antibiotic properties and far-infrared emissivity of f-illite/PP fibers were improved by increasing fluorinated illite contents and the property values of 5 wt% f-illite/PP fibers were increased remarkably by about 10.3, 41.2 and 9.8% respectively in comparison with PP non-woven fibers having no fluorinated illite additive. This result was interpreted as the development of interfacial adhesion force between the polymer chains due to the fluorination of illite power.

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a mixture of bentonite and illite as feed additives on the growth performance and litter quality of 90 Pekin ducks. The ducks were individually weighed and randomly divided into two treatments (control and 1% combination of silicate minerals), with three replicate pens per treatment, and 15 ducks per pen. Growth performance was not significantly affected (p>0.05) by the combination of bentonite and illite, but a trend of increased growth performance was observed in the control groups. Total nitrogen content and pH in the litter decreased following supplementation with the combination of bentonite and illite (p<0.05) when compared with the control group. This data indicates that the dietary supplementation with the combination of bentonite and illite (1% level) has no positive effect on the growth performance and litter quality of Pekin ducks.
