This study tests the path model which examines how the variables of past and present family dynamics, school adjustment, filed life events affect the adolescents'depression which in tum influencing their suicidal ideation. In the path model, the exogenous varialbes were negative parenting experience in childhood, maladjustment history of the family (e.g., alcohol, divorce), present parent-adolesecent communication, school adjustment, filed life events were used, whereas the adolescent depression was used as the mediated variable. The endogenous variable was the adolescent suicidal ideation. The respondents of the survey were 635 adolescent who were 1st and 2nd grade of high school located in Seoul and Busan. Using SPSS for Windows, the path analysis was done for male and female adolescents separately, since female adolescents were found to report significantly higher degree of depression and suicidal ideation then were male adolescents. The results of the path analysis were as followings. First, for both the male and female adolescents, depression was the strongest predictor of their suicidal ideation. Also, school adjustment strongly affected the adolescents'depression as well as their suicidal ideation. Meanwhile, filed life events indirectly influenced the suicidal ideation only through the depression. Second, for the male adolescents, negative parenting experience in childhood affected both the depression and suicidal ideation, while the parent-adolescent communication directly affected the suicidal ideation. Third, for the female adolescents, maladjustment family history and negative parenting experience did not affect their depression, but the suicidal ideation. Meanwhile, parent-adolescent communication was a significant predictor of female adolescents'suicidal ideation as well as their depression. In conclusion, discussion on different path of male and female adolescents'suicidal ideation was provided.

Methods: The subjects consisted of 247 adolescents. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs. Results: Daily life stress, problem of life, social support, and depression showed direct effects on suicidal ideation in adolescents, while daily life stress and problem of life showed indirect effects on suicidal ideation in adolescents. Daily life stress and problem of life showed direct effects on social support and depression in adolescents. The hypothetical path model of adolescents' suicidal ideation was proven correct. Conclusion: Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that emphasizes the reduction of daily life stress, problem of life, depression and enhancement social support in order to prevention adolescents' suicidal ideation.

Methods: The subjects consisted of 1,177 adolescents. Data was collected through self-report questionnaires. The data was analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs. Results: Stress, self-esteem, aggression, and depression showed a direct effect on suicidal ideation for adolescents, while stress, self-esteem, and aggression showed an indirect effect on suicidal ideation for adolescents. Stress, self-esteem, aggression, and suicidal ideation showed a direct effect on violent behavior for adolescents, while stress, self-esteem, aggression, and depression showed an indirect effect on violent behavior for adolescents. The modified path model of adolescent's suicidal ideation and violent behavior was proven correct. Conclusion: These results suggest that adolescent's suicidal ideation and violent behavior can be decreased by reducing stress, aggression, and depression and increasing self-esteem. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that emphasizes reducing stress, aggression, and depression and increasing self-esteem in order to decrease adolescents' suicide ideation and violence.
Purpose: This study was done to construct and test a structural model to explain factors associated with middle school students' suicidal ideation focusing on mediating effects of anger and depression Methods: Data was collected by questionnaires from 349 students selected randomly in 11 middle schools in D city. The data were analyzed using PASW 18.0(win) and AMOS 18.0(win) program. Results: Model fit indices for the hypothetical model were in good agreement with the recommended levels (CFI=.957, GFI=.945). Based on the constructed model, depression was significantly affected by anger directly, and suicidal ideation was directly influenced by depression, indirectly by anger. It was confirmed that depression turned out to be a important mediating variable on suicidal ideation and anger in middle school students. Conclusion: The results suggest that intervention strategies for dealing with anger or depression is important to reduce the suicidal ideation in middle school students. In addition, specific nursing intervention plans, including fostering of humanistic and achievement-focused educational environment, peer support programs, and individual counselling, need to be developed and implemented to control a feeling of anger and depression.
Purpose: In this study, the fitness of a path model on suicidal ideation in university students was examined including the relationship of the following stress perception, problem focused coping style, dysfunctional impulsivity, somatization, anger, and depression. Methods: The subjects consisted of 645 university students. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyses was performed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 and LISREL 8.30. Results: According to the modified model, depression was found to have the most significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. Stress perception and problem focused coping style were also found to have a significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. On the other hand the anger, somatization, and dysfunctional impulsivity were found to have a significant indirect effect mediated by depression on suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These results suggest that university students' suicidal ideation can be decreased by managing stress perception, dysfunctional impulsivity, depression, anger, and somatization and increasing problem focused coping style. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to develop stress management methods and positive coping styles.
This paper designed a mediating pathways model on how parental abuse and peer victimization lead to the development of suicidal ideation through the mediating variables of interpersonal needs and a hopelessness. The development is sure to help reduce adolescent suicidal ideation and, in turn, seek for distinct mediating methods to help teens with suicidal ideas. To validate the suggested model, this paper administered a questionnaire to 768 students in their 10th, 11th and 12th grades of high schools in Incheon, and then analyzed the structural equation model before confirming the research hypothesis by adopting the tools of SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 18.0. The result clearly demonstrates that parental abuse is one of the most influential factors in developing suicidal ideation. Peer victimization, however, had no direct bearing on suicide ideation, only indirectly affecting through the mediating variable of interpersonal needs. In addition, peer victimization had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through a sequential intervention of variables from interpersonal needs to a hopelessness. Based on the above results, this research has following implications: First, this paper analyzed the mediating pathways of youth suicidal ideation resulting from parental abuse and peer victimization. The result could possibly help find preventive measures and effective mediating approaches to save the lives of young people at risk of committing suicide. Secondly, this study proved that the interpersonal needs, a relatively new concept hardly introduced in previous studies, is a significant predictive factor for suicide ideation, serving as an intervening variable of developing suicidal ideation among young people who have suffered parental abuse and peer victimization.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model and decision rules for the elderly's suicidal ideation based on the Korean Welfare Panel survey data. By utilizing this data, we obtained many decision rules to predict the elderly's suicide ideation. Design/methodology/approach This study used classification analysis to derive decision rules to predict on the basis of decision tree technique. Weka 3.8 is used as the data mining tool in this study. The decision tree algorithm uses J48, also known as C4.5. In addition, 66.6% of the total data was divided into learning data and verification data. We considered all possible variables based on previous studies in predicting suicidal ideation of the elderly. Finally, 99 variables including the target variable were used. Classification analysis was performed by introducing sampling technique through backward elimination and data balancing. Findings As a result, there were significant differences between the data sets. The selected data sets have different, various decision tree and several rules. Based on the decision tree method, we derived the rules for suicide prevention. The decision tree derives not only the rules for the suicidal ideation of the depressed group, but also the rules for the suicidal ideation of the non-depressed group. In addition, in developing the predictive model, the problem of over-fitting due to the data imbalance phenomenon was directly identified through the application of data balancing. We could conclude that it is necessary to balance the data on the target variables in order to perform the correct classification analysis without over-fitting. In addition, although data balancing is applied, it is shown that performance is not inferior in prediction rate when compared with a biased prediction model.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents and factors such as family conflict, cohesion, organization of family activities, expressiveness, independence, achievement orientation, depression, stress, and support of friends and teachers, according to the individual student's parental type. The study sample consisted of 1908 high school students in the 11th grade from the city of Inchon. The results showed that in both males and females, suicidal ideation was greater in students from single-parent families than two natural-parent families and greater in step-parent families than in single-parent families. As an exploratory study, the analysis of factors influencing suicidal ideation according to parental type showed that the study model accounted for 33.6% for students from two natural-parent families, 42.8% for students from single-parent families and 84.5% for students from step-parent families, of the variance in suicidal ideation. This indicates that the study model is more appropriate for application to students from single-parent and step-parent families. In addition, the study shows that the factors of influence and the way these factors make an influence tended to differ according to parental type. This indicates that in terms of predicting suicidal ideation, it is more effective to study students according to parental type than as a whole. It also indicates that it is ineffective to take the same approach in dealing with suicidal ideation for students with different parental types.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effect of hope and depression applied on the influence of social stigma on suicidal ideation of 108 HIV infected males. Methods: This study was a descriptive, crosssectional design that used a survey approach. Data collection was one-on-one interviews by a counseling nurse from July 2012 to January 2013. The survey included questions about social stigma, hope, depression, and suicidal ideation. Results: Fitness of the hypothetical model was appropriate ($x^2/df=1.97$, TLI=.97, CFI=.98, RMSEA=.07, SRMR=.04). Social stigma had no direct effect on suicidal ideation but had a significant indirect effect on suicidal ideation via hope and depression. Hope had a mediating effect the relationship between stigma and depression but no direct effect on the relationship between stigma and suicidal ideation. Hope had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation via depression. Stigma and hope accounted for 41% of depression was where as suicidal ideation was explained 56.3% by depression, hope, and stigma. Conclusion: In order to reduce depression and suicidal ideation of HIV infected people, stigma improving strategies are required. And hope intervention for HIV infected people may decrease their suicidal ideation and depression.
Purpose: This study was to assess the association of internet addiction and depression, stress and suicidal ideation among adolescents. Methods: The authors have surveyed 2 middle schools and 2 high schools located in Seoul and analyzed 525 questionnaires. The questionnaire included the Internet Addiction Self Diagnosis Index (K-index), Child Depression Index (CDI), Stress Index and Reynold's Suicidal Ideation Index. Structural equational model analysis was done to explore the association between internet addiction and suicidal ideation. Results: The adolescent internet addiction groups were classified as the high risk group 12 (2.3%), the potential risk group 64 (12.2%) and the normal group 449 (85.5%). When classified according to sex, the high risk group is consisted of 8 (3.9%) boys, 4 (1.3%) girls and the potential risk group is consisted of 41 (64.1%) boys and 23 (35.9%) girls which leads to the conclusion that boys are relatively more addicted compared with girls. The group with more addiction showed higher depression scores, stress scores and suicidal ideation scores. The correlation analysis showed the significant relations between internet addiction and depression (r=0.263), stress (r=0.265) and suicidal ideation (r=0.284). According to the structural equation model analysis, internet addiction had direct effects on the depression and indirect effects on suicidal ideation. Stress had the significant direct effects on both internet addiction and depression. Depression had a significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Internet addiction affects directly and indirectly an depression and suicidal ideation among adolescent.
