The behavior of hydroxide ions on water-ice films was studied by using $Cs^+$ reactive ion scattering (RIS), low energy sputtering (LES) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). A $Cs^+$ beam of a low kinetic energy (<100 eV) from $Cs^+$ ion gun was scattered at the film surface, and then $Cs^+$ projectiles pick up the neutral molecules on the surface as $Cs^+$-molecule clusters form (RIS process). In LES process, the preexisting ions on the surface are desorbed by the $Cs^+$ beam impact. The water-ice films made of a thick (>50 BL) $H_2$O layer and a thin $D_2O$ overlayer were controlled in temperatures 90~140K. We prepared hydroxide ions by using Na atoms which proceeded hydrolysis reaction either on the ice film surface or at the interface of the $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ layers.[1] The migration of hydroxide ions from the $H_2O/D_2O$ interface to the top of the film was examined as afunction of time. From this experiment, we show that hydroxide ions tend to reside at the water-ice surface. We also investigated the H/D exchange reactions of $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ molecules mediated by hydroxide ions to reveal the mechanism of migration of hydroxide to the ice surface.

This study utilized automated machine learning (AutoML) to calculate Arctic ice surface temperature (IST). AutoML-derived IST exhibited a strong correlation coefficient (R) of 0.97 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.51K. Comparative analysis with deep neural network (DNN) models revealed that AutoML IST demonstrated good accuracy, particularly when compared to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) IST and ice mass balance (IMB) buoy IST. These findings underscore the effectiveness of AutoML in enhancing IST estimation accuracy under challenging polar conditions.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of intermediate peak and time duration, and to conduct a review for the causes of the intermediate peak. In this test, ice impact tests were conducted using a bow side shell frame and ice specimen. A total of 70 samples were manufactured. Two types of ice specimen with relatively different surface conditions were used. The criterion for dividing the two types of ice specimen was the different exposure times to room temperature after freezing. This experiment was conducted for each parameter in order to reproduce the actual icebreaking situation. As a result of the analysis, the intermediate peak in the ice load signal have been found to be caused by mechanisms by which the inner surface of broken ice contact with hull immediately after the initial hitting point of ice has been broken.
The use of passive microwave data for estimating sea-ice thickness is limited by strong dependence of emissivity on near-surface brine. However, this particular characteristic becomes a basis for an algorithm to estimate thickness of thin sea-ice if a thickness-salinity-emissivity relationship is established. This study aims at developing an algorithm to estimate sea ice thickness on the basis of this relationship. In order to establish a thickness-salinity-emissivity relationship, we have conducted multi-platform synchronous observations in the Sea of Okhotsk. We note a positive relationship between thickness and brightness temperature. From observations, we also establish an empirical relationship between salinity and emissivity, thus between thickness and brightness temperature. The derived relationship is qualitatively similar to the one based on Hoekstra and Cappillino's formulation. Our results suggest that for thin sea-ice in the winter period there is potential to develop an algorithm to estimate sea-ice thickness.
Observations were conducted in Uiseong Binggye-ri Ice Valley of Korea, where a low temperature talus is located. The talus temperature at Ice Hole near the lower end of the talus remained at $0^{\circ}C$ until summer or autumn and averaged $-0.3^{\circ}C$ over 2 years. The talus temperature at Warm Hole was much higher than the external air temperature during autumn and winter. The outflow of warm air at Warm Hole begins in the late summer of fall. The direction of airflow through the talus surface was determined by the relationship between talus temperature and external air temperature. Annual variations in talus temperature and air exchange between the talus and the external environment can be divided into four periods. It was found that the airflow directions at Warm Hole and Ice Hole were not necessarily opposites. The outflows from the talus at Ice Hole and Warm Hole can occur simultaneously.

Model ice forming process in ice tank needs several steps of seeding, freezing, tempering. In those process, one of the most important factors to affect the accuracy of experiment is the homogeneity of the ice thickness and the temperature. This paper investigated a computational and statistical method to assess the uniformity of the model ice. In addition, the different configurations of freezing systems were considered to improve the uniformity. Qualitative assessment using streamlines from the cooling units was carried out by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the quantitative evaluations of the homogeneity were compared using the temperature distribution on the ice surface. In addition, multi species transport analysis is introduced to understand the circulation efficiency of cold air from the cooling units. As the results, optimized configurations were determined by adjusting the angles of vane in the cooling units.
Cavitating fluid sea ice model of Plato and Hibler (1992) is applied to the Southern Ocean with an idealized, circular Antarctica. Using climatological atmospheric forcing fields averaged in the zonal direction, we show that oceanic heat flux and ice velocity have major effects on the seasonal change of ice edge, as other studies showed. In our model results, there appears a zone of free drift that contains a polynya zone. Thermodynamic forcing functions make dominant contributions to daily increments of ice thickness and compactness, except the zones of ice edge and polynya. The dominant contributions are also shown in distributions of the temperature on ice surface and several to terms in surface heat balance equation, and are also confirmed by those obtained from the thermodynamic-only model with the different locations of ice edge.
Increase of greenhouse gas due to $CO_2$ and CH$_4$ gases would cause the global warming in the atmosphere. According to the global circulation model, it is pointed out in the Okhotsk Sea that the large increase of atmospheric temperature might be occurredin this region by global warming due to the doubling of greenhouse effectgases. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the sea ice extents in the Okhotsk Sea. To improve the sea ice extents and concentration with more highly accuracy, the field experiments have begun to comparewith Airborne Microwave Radiometer (AMR) and video images installed on the aircraft (Beach-200). The sea ice concentration is generally proportional to the brightness temperature and accurate retrieval of sea ice concentration from the brightness temperature is important because of the sensitivity of multi-channel data with the amount of open water in the sea ice pack. During the field experiments of airborned AMR the multi-frequency data suggest that the sea ice concentration is slightly dependending on the sea ice types since the brightness temperature is different between the thin and small piece of sea ice floes, and a large ice flow with different surface signatures. On the basis of classification of two sea ice types, it is cleary distinguished between the thin ice and the large ice floe in the scatter plot of 36.5 and 89.0GHz, but it does not become to make clear of the scatter plot of 18.7 and 36.5GHz Two algorithms that have been used for deriving sea ice concentrations from airbomed multi-channel data are compared. One is the NASA Team Algorithm and the other is the Bootstrap Algorithm. Intrercomparison on both algorithms with the airborned data and sea ice concentration derived from video images bas shown that the Bootstrap Algorithm is more consistent with the binary maps of video images.
The statistical prediction model for wintertime surface air temperature, that is based on snow cover extent and Arctic sea ice concentration, is updated by considering $El-Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO). These additional factors, representing leading modes of interannual variability in the troposphere and stratosphere, enhance the seasonal prediction over the Northern Hemispheric surface air temperature, even though their impacts are dependent on the predicted month and region. In particular, the prediction of Korean surface air temperature in midwinter is substantially improved. In December, ENSO improved about 10% of prediction skill compared without it. In January, ENSO and QBO jointly helped to enhance prediction skill up to 36%. These results suggest that wintertime surface air temperature in Korea can be better predicted by considering not only high-latitude surface conditions (i.e., Eurasian snow cover extent and Arctic sea ice concentration) but also equatorial sea surface temperature and stratospheric circulation.

Heat transfer phenomena during melting process of the phase change material (ice) was studied by numerical analysis and experiments. In a horizontal ice storage tube, the natural convection caused an increase in melting rate. However, the reduction of the heating surface area caused a decrease in melting rate. Therefore, during the melting process of ice in a horizontal cylinder, the reduction of the heating surface area should be considered. Under the same heating wall and initial water temperature condition, the melting rate became higher for $V_s/V_tot/=0.545 \;than \;that\; for\; V_s/V_tot$/=1.00 due to the difference in the reduction of heating surface area. A modified melting model considering the equivalent thermal conductivity of liquid phase and volume reduction was proposed. The results of the model were compared with the measured values and found to be in good agreement.
