  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the climatic characteristic of South Korea and use it as a fundamental data for planning an environmental housing complex in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The world after the Industrial Revolution has greatly developed economically but falied to notice the importance of the environment. It has been gradually damaged by the reckless exploitation for tens of years, and thus inflicted a loss on human. In this study, necessity and usability of the application of the climatic element for planning the environmental housing complex are to be presented. The data used in this study are given by the Met.

  • Many prior researchers have repeatedly emphasized the importance of utilizing external knowledge as a critical factor for the success of organizational innovation. But they seem to have ignored the importance of the practical methods to advance the ability of finding new way of applying external knowledge to innovation activities. This paper suggests the exploitation of firm's knowledge base in innovative way as a practical method to utilize external knowledge for organizational innovation, because it could be possible to find out a common factor in external knowledge with organizational knowledge base by exploiting it. According to the empirical test with data of 1,143 manufacturing firms, all of the hypothesis were strongly supported.

  • It is introduced an outstanding book about an important topic in occupational and environmental sciences i.e., the opportunities and challenges that may be connected with increasing the use and distribution of rare earth elements. These chemically similar elements, comprising the lanthanides, scandium, and yttrium, are involved in a number of essential technological applications, and their effects raise a number of human health issues of relevance to the occupational and environmental sciences. The book that I introduced here, "Rare Earth Elements in Human and Environmental Health; At the Crossroads between Toxicity and Safety" edited by Giovanni Pagano (Pan Stanford Publishing Pte. Ltd., Temasek Boulevard, Singapore) represents a break from that situation. It is essential to increase our knowledge about the environmental fate and biological effects of these technologically important metals in order to prevent unforeseen long-term man-made consequences to human health. This book is likely to become an important resource for scientists, engineers, and decision makers who understand the need for sensible exploitation of this resource.

  • Engineering applications of global optimization techniques are recently abundant in the literature and it may be caused by both new methodologies arising and faster computers coming out. Many of the optimization techniques are based on natural or biological phenomena. This study put focus on enhancing the performace of Cuckoo Search (CS) among them since it has the least number of parameters to tune. The proposed enhancement can be achieved by applying surrogate-based optimization at every cycle of CS, which fortifies the exploitation capability of the original method. The enhanced algorithm has been applied several engineering design problems with constraints. The proposed method shows comparable or superior performance to the original method.

  • The orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) technique is well known to be robust against the frequency-selective fading in wireless channels. It is due to the exploitation of a guard interval that is inserted at beginning of each OFDM symbol. Based on the conventional OFDM and a polyphase filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (PF-OFDM) technique, we developed an adaptive beamforming algorithm for antenna arrays. The proposed algorithm would lead to an efficient use of channel, since it is possible to eliminate a guard interval and also easily suppress interchannel interference at the same time. In this paper, a series of computer simulations have been provided to show the performance of the proposed system.

  • A meshless method with novel variation of point collocation by finite mixture approximation is developed in this paper, termed the meshless finite mixture (MFM) method. It is based on the finite mixture theorem and consists of two or more existing meshless techniques for exploitation of their respective merits for the numerical solution of partial differential boundary value (PDBV) problems. In this representation, the classical reproducing kernel particle and differential quadrature techniques are mixed in a point collocation framework. The least-square method is used to optimize the value of the weight coefficient to construct the final finite mixture approximation with higher accuracy and numerical stability. In order to validate the developed MFM method, several one- and two-dimensional PDBV problems are studied with different mixed boundary conditions. From the numerical results, it is observed that the optimized MFM weight coefficient can improve significantly the numerical stability and accuracy of the newly developed MFM method for the various PDBV problems.

  • One of the oldest, still unsolved, and often ignored problems in magnetic resonance remains the issue of how to observe undistorted, normal one-dimensional spectra where the frequencies and their relative intensities represent faithfully the distribution of spins and sites in the sample within the magnet. Often distortions in these parameters are accepted, as the price of sensitivity enhancement, or because it is unclear just how these distortions might be avoided. Surprisingly enough, the problem is exacerbated by the use of modern techniques of pulsed Fourier transform NMR. Noise spectroscopy is an approach to solving the problem of distorted NMR spectra, which is largely under appreciated; it promises virtually "unlimited" distortionless bandwidths without costly hardware investments. Nonetheless, its exploitation remains limited. We will discuss why noise spectroscopy belongs in the arsenal of tricks spectroscopists should be aware of, show examples where its use is essential if accurate, quantitative NMR is to be expected, and discuss some recent approaches which extend its applicability yet further, particularly in solid state NMR and in applications to quadrupolar nuclear spins.

  • The exploitation of the resource wind energy is a rapidly growing area world-wide. The number of installed units is continuously increasing, and therefore, it is important to respect and to deal with the impact of wind power generation system. From the view of an electric grid utility, there is a major problem with the impact of the wind system on the voltage of the electric grid, to which a turbine in connected. The problem is rather common in the connection of a wind power system to an already existing grid, since the grid is very seldom designed for the transmission of additional power. In this paper, it is investigated the voltage impact of distribution line, to which wind power generation system is connected.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between IT human capability and knowledge transfer and the role of absorptive capacity between them. From the test of both measurement and structural model using Partial Least Squares (PLS), IT human capability is found to be significant to absorptive capacity and knowledge transfer. Absorptive capacity is also significantly related to knowledge transfer. The interesting result found in this study is that the path of absorptive capacity drawn from IT human capability to knowledge transfer is stronger than the direct relationship between IT human capability and knowledge transfer, indicating that absorptive capacity plays an important role in knowledge transfer. This result indicates that IT personnel with stronger technical skill, interpersonal skill and management capability are more likely to acquire and learn knowledge effectively from outside expertise. Moreover, this study shows that absorptive capacity, the individual’s ability to utilize external knowledge is derived from IT human capability and strongly effects on transferring knowledge from outsourcing vendors. This study suggests IT related managers that the development of IT human capability and absorptive capacity should be recognized for a successful exploitation of outside knowledge within a firm. It is also a necessary condition for a successful IT implementation and maintenance independently and economically from outside vendors.

  • Recently, many South Korean firms have suffered financial losses and damaged corporate images from the data breaches. Accordingly, a firm should manage their IT assets securely through an information security investment. However, the difficulty of measuring the return on an information security investment is one of the critical obstacles for firms in making such investment decisions. There have been a number of studies on the effect of IT investment so far, but there are few researches on information security investment. In this paper, based on a sample of 76 investment announcements of firms whose stocks are publicly traded in the South Korea's stock market between 2001 and 2017, we examines the market reaction to information security investment by using event study methodology. The results of the main effects indicate that self-developed is significantly related to cumulative average abnormal returns (CAARs), while no significant effect was observed for discloser, investment characteristics and firm characteristics. In addition, we find that the market reacts more favorably to the news announced by the subject of investment than the vendor, in case of investments with commercial exploitation. One of main contributions in our study is that it has revealed the factors affecting the market reaction to announcement of information security investment. It is also expected that, in practice, corporate executives will be able to help make an information security investment decision.
