An Empirical Analysis on Trade-off Theory and Pecking Order Theory for Medical Institutions's Capital Structure (의료기관 자본구조에 대한 상충관계이론과 자본조달 순위이론 실증분석)

  • Based on the findings of a study focused on medical institutions(Fama & French, 2002), this study determined possible causality between determinants of capital structure and liability level, while estimating targeted debt ratio. Moreover, it also examined hypotheses about the adjustment of targeted debt ratio and the of fundraising patterns, so that it verified the relative priority of trade-off theory and pecking order theory. First, profitability had positive(+) relationships with liability level, while investment opportunities had negative(-) relationships with liability level. This finding supported pecking order theory, and non-liability tax shield effects had negative(-) relationships with liability level as estimated in both trade-off theory and pecking order theory. Next, this study verified trade-off and pecking order theory at once by means of regression analysis about the variation of liability level in associations with disparity from targeted debt ratio and short-term fluctuation of profit and investment. As a result, it was noted that liability level became mean-reversed to targeted liability ratio but slowly, SO it was difficult to assert that such mean reverse may support trade-off theory. However, the finding that most of short-term fluctuations of profit and investment are absorbed into liabilities supported pecking order theory. On the other hand, it was found that the larger scale of medical institutions is more supportive of pecking order theory in the associations between liability level and profitability and the fundraising patterns than trade-off theory.

  • Korea Shipping Act admits shipping conferences' joint actions like rate agreement, sailing agreement in some degree for development of shipping transport industries for decades. Meanwhile, EU has prohibited all kinds of shipping conferences' joint actions since October 2008, and many advanced countries also have similar position on shipping conference. The balance development between shippers and ship owners is very important in terms of national economic growth. So it is appropriate time to revise related laws such as Shipping Act and Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act. First, It is direction for revision of Korean Shipping Act. The act has to define precisely the criteria of "unfairness" in case of admitting of shipping conferences' joint actions. Shipping conferences have a conference with shipper or shipper's delegation substantially on freight and transport conditions and so on. Second, It is direction for revision of Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act. The fair trade commission has to perform fair roles between shippers and ship owners. The judgement of fairness has to confirm according to the spirit of not Korea Shipping Act but Korea Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act itself.

  • An anti-dumping has become the trade policy of choice for developing countries as well as advanced countries, hence it is the impending issue to the export-oriented countries including Korea. After colligating the analysis on the trade and industrial policy between Korea and China as well as the analysis on the preceding research, the main reasons of anti-dumping were selected as followings; an unemployment rate, real GDP growth rate and consumer price increase as internal factors, and trade balance, regional coefficient and trade specification index as external factors. Then, the research on how the above seven variable factors can affect the number of anti-dumping measures was accomplished. For the empirical analysis, the above information was used after reorganizing them by on the quarterly basis. Through the use of the correlation analysis, backward elimination of multiple regression analysis model and time-series analysis, it has appeared that the unemployment rate appeared to be the most important factors of anti-dumping measures in addition to the increase rate of trade balance. The variable such as the unemployment rate is uncontrollable for us, so it is appropriate to establish and operate an preemptive monitoring system based on the increasing rate of the amount of export and increasing rate of trade surplus.

Relationship Between Dry Ports and Regional Economy: Evidence from Yangtze River Economic Belt

  • With the evolution of containerization and globalization of supply chains, aspects of port functions have made the transition from the sea to the inland region that forms the dry port. To explore the relationship between dry ports and regional economic development, this study uses a gravity model and forecast model to analyze 1,040 observations in 104 cities (22 dry port cities) along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2008 to 2017. The model includes economic variables, logistics variables, foreign relations variables, and human capital variables. It was found that the dry port is positively correlated with trade volume. Compared with a city without a dry port, the trade volume of a city with a dry port will increase 0.099 times. It can be concluded that a dry port is crucial for the economic development of the YREB. It was also found that per capita GDP as an economic variable, road area and rail number as logistics variables, and foreign relation variables are positively correlated with trade volume, while the human capital variable has no significant effect on trade volume. In addition, governmental policy implications are addressed from the aspects of dry port and industry cluster caused by foreign investment.

  • This study is designed to investigate the effect of inflow FDI on the host country's economic growth and the role of absorptive capacity in this relationship. Eight developing countries in East Asia, including Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, are analyzed. Year data from 2000 to 2018 are used. Based on the study of Hansen (1999), the panel threshold effect model is used, and human capital, R&D, and infrastructure are set as absorptive capacity by referring to Wang and Hwang (2013). The analysis results are as follows. It is confirmed that FDI has a positive effect on the economic growth of the host country, and absorption capacity strengthens the relationship between FDI and economic growth in a positive direction. At this time, it appears that a threshold exists for the moderating effect of the absorptive capacity. It presents useful implications for economic growth in developing countries.

  • In Korea, the road transport industry is pointed out as a major cause of air pollutants, so management control is needed. Existing studies used only positive input and output variables to measure regional efficiency. However, it is necessary to consider the environmental pollution problem in efficiency analysis. In this study, an undesirable SBM analysis using CO2 was conducted to measure efficiency of domestic regions. In addition, SDM was conducted to examine the ripple effect between domestic regions. As a result of the analysis, the efficiency of the capital area such as Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon was high in the road transport industry. However, the efficiency of the road transportation industry in Daegu and Gangwon was low. In the SDM analysis, it was found that the regional equipment capabilities had a great influence on efficiency. In order to improve efficiency, it is necessary to increase and improve the equipment capacity of the road transport industry.

  • Although awareness of the need to respond to climate change is expanding, various controversies are being raised about the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The EU has announced that they will implement CBAM as responding to climate change and preventing carbon leakage. However, the questions are raised as to whether it is actually effective in preventing carbon leakage. Above all, CBAM has its own contradictions, thus it could not be easy to implement. This is because the possibility of violation of the WTO principles is high and there are many issues in implementation. Emission Trading System (ETS) based on CBAM differs by country, and international linkage is not easy in that ETS is not a widely used system worldwide. The EU's CBAM is highly likely to be used as a trade restrictive tool, and is inevitably subject to trade disputes in that it imposes additional tariffs. The unilateral implementation of CBAM should be restrained unless support from the international community and consideration for developing countries are not taken into account.

A Study on the Curriculum Development for the Trade in Services (서비스무역 커리큘럼 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The importance of trade in services has been increasing day by day, but the research on it is insufficient so far in terms of basic information, statistics, influence, industrialization and so on. To foster of professional trader in services, we need curriculums, textbooks and training centers like academy or college in advance. We have well developed curriculums for trade in goods since 1960's in Korea, so we can transfer the trade in goods' curriculum to trade in services. There are some differences between trade in goods and trade in services basically, but we can borrow a lot of idea from trade in goods in terms of basic framework like international economics, international business and international commercial transactions. This study propose the basic framework for trade in services' curriculum. First, trade in services economics handle the basic concept, statistics, characteristics, theories etc. Second, trade in services business treat the global companies to expand their business to global market, so characteristics of service companies, marketing plan and strategies and so on. Third, international commercial transaction of trade in services concentrate for procedures and contracts in terms of formation, implementation and finish of contract. Finally, Services industries can be a future strategic industry to any contries, so there are some national and corporates' strategy for expanding their business. This study acts on the initial idea for curriculums of trade in services, so I am looking forward to many criticism and development from another researchers to develop the model curriculums and textbook for education of specialized trader in services.

Anti-Fraud in International Supply Chain Finance: Focusing on Moneual Case

  • Purpose - This study analyzes the scope of due diligence and risks of banks and K-Sure in trade finance covered by EFF focusing on Moneual case, one of the latest and biggest trade finance fraud cases in Korea. Also, we suggest anti-fraud measures in trade finance on the part of banks and K-Sure in order to give them a desirable way of due diligence and reasonable risk management of export insurance. Design/methodology - Based on Moneual case of trade finance fraud, this study employs the methodology of an extended literature review and analysis of court decisions. Findings - Seoul High Court of Korea failed to decide whether K-Sure was wholly obliged to pay the insurance against the banks' EFF claims, but issued a compulsory mediation order, judging that both the banks and K-Sure were responsible by 50:50. The court may have judged that both the parties had lacked their due diligence in the trade finance. It is quite difficult for trade finance providers to manually investigate whether the transaction is suspected of trade finance fraud, so digitalization of trade finance which can facilitate the prevention and detection of trade fraud needs to be realized quickly. Since there has been no international rule available for open account trade finance up till now, clearly stipulated EFF terms on the exporter's genuine export obligation might have protected K-Sure from the disaster. Originality/value - This study investigates the due diligence of the banks and K-Sure in Moneual case which few researchers have considered, to the best of our knowledge. This study also suggests several practical methods (including block chain) to prevent complicating trade finance fraud amid increasing use of an open account, and further offers reasonable risk management of EFF employing international factoring rule which is also related to problematic open account trade finance.

A Study on the Multilateral Discussion Trends of Service Trade Agreement (서비스무역규범의 다자간 논의 동향 고찰)

  • Today, due to the serviceization of the economy, volume and position Global trade in Services have gradually increased. Stable and fair trade can be achieved through solid international trade law. Multilateral discussions on service trade agreement have been stagnant, but have recently shown considerable outcome. Service trade agreement(GATS) deal with various service trade barriers in member countries that hinder free trade in services. Recently, a group of WTO members have established the 「Joint Initiative on Services Domestic Regulation」. The agreement aims to ensure that licensing and qualification requirements and procedures, as well as technical standards do not constitute unnecessary barriers to services trade. This study is to understand the type and statistics of service trade barriers that affect actual service transactions. At the same time, It aims to examine the progress of discussions on multilateral service trade agreement for resolving service trade barriers.
