  • The interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyacrylic acid (PAA)-polyethylene glycol (PEG) were synthesized via crosslinking of PEG and simultaneous free radical polymerization of PAA. The equilibrium swelling of the IPNs matrices, ranged from 40% to 95%, was varied to a great extent as compared with PAA homopolymer due to the interpolymer interaction between PAA and PEG. The drug release kinetics of drug loaded matrices was significantly affected by the charge of drugs as well as interpolymer complexation.

  • Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) shows a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at $32^{\circ}C$. Consequently, its thermosensitivity has extensively been investigated in coating materials as well as biomedical and agricultural industry. However, mechanical properties of the swollen gels are generally poor and reinforcement is often desired. A series of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) and emulsion blends hydrogels of polyurethane (PU) and PNIPAAm were prepared in order to overcome the shortcomings of a normal PNIPAAm hydrogels. Regarding the mechanical reinforcement of swollen gel, a significant increase in compression and tensile properties has been obtained by incorporating PU.

  • The gene for isopenicillin N synthase (cyclase; IPNS) was cloned from Lysobacter lactamgenus using DNA probe amplified with primers based on the consensus sequences of isopenicillin N synthase genes of other ${\beta}$-lactam-producing microorganisms. The genomic library of L. lactamgenus using pUC18 plasmid cloned at the SacI site were screened with the PCR-generated DNA probe and three positive clones were isolated. Enzyme activities in E. coli clones were confirmed by bioassay and HPLC assay. Throughout the functional mapping, it was observed that the gene for isopenicillin N synthase is located at the 1.3-kb XhoI-BamHI fragment of insert of positive clones. Nucleotide sequencing at both ends of the XhoI-BamHI fragment revealed that IPNS of L. lactamgenus has the common amino acid sequences at amino- and carboxy-termini.

  • Interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) composed of castor oil(CO) polyurethane(PU) and epoxy resin were prepared by the simultaneous polymerization technique. Two types of PU were prepared using 1,4-butanediol(BD) and BD/trimethylolpropane(TMP) as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent. The PU/epoxy based on BD as a chain extending agent showed more shift in the damping peak than PU/epoxy based on BD/TMP as the PU content was increased. BDPU/epoxy simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks(SINs) had a better compatibility than BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs. For both systems, it was postulated that unique network formation of PU/epoxy SINs as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent had occurred to a significant extent of phase mixing. The types of chain extender in the PU were found to be an important factor in determining the phase mixing of the IPNs. When the BD/TMP-PU reaction was faster than epoxy network, the extent of phase mixing was retarded by decreasing entanglement of networks. It was found that both PU/epoxy SINs provided enhanced flexural properties and fracture toughness, fracture surfaces of BDPU/epoxy and BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs showed the localized shear deformation and generation of stress whitening associated with the cavitation.

  • Interpenerating Polymer Networks (IPNs) are unique type of polymer blend, synthesized by swelling a crossed polymer (Epoxy) with second polymer (Silicon) and also we adopted Urethane as the second polymer. The relationship between dielectric and mechanical properties of high temperature curing IPNs(E/S, E/U) are investigated. The ratios of weight that we formed we re two kind of thing, one (E/S) about 1[wt%]. 3[wt%], 5[wt%], 7[wt%], 10[wt%], and the other (E/U) about 5[wt%], 15[wt%], 25[wt%]. It was heat-cured for 24hours at $100^{\circ}C$ 48 hours at $10^{\circ}C$, 5 hours at $130^{\circ}C$, 15hours at $130^{\circ}C$ in E/S and also for 5 hours at $130^{\circ}C$ in E/U. From the viewpoint of dielectric and mechanical properties, the optimum condition is obtained from the sample cured for 5hours at $130^{\circ}C$ for 1[wt%] in the E/S, and also obtained from the sample cure d for 5 hours at $130^{\circ}C$ in E/U.

  • Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) embedded diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy composites were fabricated for improving its mechanical properties and thermal stability. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites changed significantly with the introduction of PES. The value of the fracture toughness of this composite also was increased remarkably about 24%. Thermal stability of PES/epoxy composites also improved 12%, which was calculated with integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT). From the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) result, the curing temperature and curing heat decreased according to the increase of PES contents. These were attributed to the good distribution and the formation of the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) composed of the epoxy network and linear PES.

  • Luminescence and scintillation properties of $PbWO_{4},\;XAIO_{3}$ (X = Y, Lu, Y-Lu) and $LiBaF_{3}$ based scintillators are reported. The effect of present and often not understood defect states is demonstrated in different scintillator parameters and related measurements are discussed. Importance of understanding of defect states participating in the processes of energy transfer and storage in the scintillating materials is emphasised.

  • Pulsatile swelling behaviors and their application to drug delivery system were studied by using interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) hydrogels constructed with poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). The PVA/PAAc IPNs hydrogels were symthesized by UV irradiation tallowed by repetitive freezing and thawing method. These hydrogels showed pH and temperature sensitive swelling behaviors. From the release experiment, the release amount of model drug incorporated into these hydrogels showed pulsatile patterns. Permeability coefficients obtained by various solutes differed in response to changes of permeation conditions.
