  • A real-time wireless monitoring and analysis methods using the wearable PPG sensor to estimate cardiovascular condition is studied for ubiquitous healthcare service. A small size and low-power consuming wearable photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor is designed as a wrist type device and connected with the IP node assigned its own IPv6 address. The measured PPG waveform in the IP node is collected and transferred to a central server PC through the IP-enabled wireless network for storage and analysis purposes. A monitoring and analysis program is designed to process the accelerated plethysmogram (APG) waveform by applying the second order derivatives to analyze systolic waves as well as heart rate variability analysis from the measured PPG waveform. From our results, the features of cardiovascular condition from individual's PPG waveform and estimation of vascular compliance by the comparison of APG-aging index (AI) and ratio of LF/HF are demonstrated.

  • Recently, mobile devices have supported wireless LAN as well as bluetooth, where the services such as heterogeneous network access and seamless mobility connection are important. Even though the mobility and physical network might be varied, an efficient communication mechanism for the network access and a robust mobility management of mobile devices are needed. In this paper, we design and implement a Bluetooth system with mobile LAN access capability. The proposed system has the following features; 1) IP connection is enabled by BENP in the link layer, 2) The networks devices of heterogeneous mobile devices are integrated into a single virtual network interface, 3) IP mobility between the bluetooth and wireless LAN is supported by mobile IP. The experimented results show that the packet loss and delay time during the handover duration is reduced by predicting the handover among different networks followed by the setup of any required parameters in advance.

  • There are lots of wired and wireless home network technologies these days. However, an effective middleware is needed to control devices in home regardless oj any kinds of home network technologies applied. We can integrally and simply control all the home appliances using the architecture that leverages TCP/IP and Web technologies, which is like UPnP control technology. In this paper, UPnP technology and IEEE 1394 technology are introduced., and also UPnP over 1394 is issued. Some results from the implementation show that it is possible to control IEEE 1394 devices using the IP-based UPnP technology instead of just using a direct AV/C command set. So, in the experiment, implements the modeling of the UPnP-enabled IEEE 1394 device which is not present for real. Therefore, promising ...

  • In Mobile IP-enabled wireless LAN (WLAN), packet flows are corrupted due to the handoff of a mobile node (MN) at the link and network layers, which results in burst packet losses and can cause temporary buffer underflow in a streaming client at the MN. This transient behavior hurts time-sensitive streaming media applications severely. Among many suggestions to address this handoff problem, few studies are concerned with empirical issues regarding the practical validation of handoff options on the time-sensitive streaming media applications. In this paper, targeting seamless streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN, we introduce a seamless media streaming framework that estimates accurate pre-buffering level to compensate the handoff latency. In addition, we propose a link-layer (L2) assisted seamless media streaming system as a preliminary version of this framework. The proposed system is designed to reduce the handoff latency and to overcome the playback disruption from an implementation viewpoint. A packet buffering and forwarding mechanism with L2 trigger is implemented to reduce the handoff latency and to eliminate burst packet losses generated during the handoff. A pre-buffering adjustment is also performed to compensate the handoff latency. The experimental results show that the proposed approach eliminates packet losses during the handoff and thus verify the feasibility of seamless media streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN.

  • Currently, the commercialization of the $5^{th}$ Generation (5G) service is becoming more prevalent in domestic communication network technology. This has reduced communication delay time and enabled large-capacity data transmission and video streaming services in real-time. In order to keep pace with these developments, K-water has introduced a smart process control system in water purification plants to monitor the status of the water purification process. However, since wireless networks are based on the public Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, communication delay time remains high, and high-resolution video services are limited. This is because communication networks still have a closed structure due to expense and security issues. Therefore, with 5G in its current form, it is very difficult to accommodate future services without improving the infrastructure of its communication networks. In recognition of these problems, this study implemented the authentication and management function of wireless networks on a wired network management system in the K-water Bansong water purification plant. The results confirmed that wired Local Area Network (LAN) services give a higher security performance than an expensive commercial wireless LAN system. This was achieved by using an Internet Protocol (IP) address management system of wired networks and the packet filtering function of the Layer2 (L2) switch. This study also confirmed that it is possible to create a wireless LAN service that is 3.7 times faster than the existing LTE communication network.

  • In this paper, we show a scheme to directly access DLNA network with the 3G/4G communication module of a smartphone in home or office environment. By exploiting this scheme, end users can use DLNA service more conveniently regardless of the type of activated communication module in a smartphone. For the implementation of this scheme, we use a femtocell that is a basestation with small coverage. A problem caused by the IP address hierarch discrepancy between the IP address of 3G/4G module of smartphone and those of local network nodes is resolved by deploying local IP address scheme. The processing of multicasting packet, that is required in DLNA service, is enabled by using IP tunneling scheme. As a result, end user can access DLNA network regardless of the type of activated wireless communication module. We validate the design result by implementing it on a commercial WCDMA femtocell.

  • This paper investigates protocol architecture of a Web-ZigBee gateway for interconnecting TCP/IP-based networks and ZigBee/IEEE802.15.4-based wireless sensor networks. The Web-ZigBee gateway delivers data between the TCP/IP network and the ZigBee network. Since those two networks have different communication protocols, a protocol translation mechanism is needed. Herein, we propose a method to deliver query messages from the Internet to the sensor network and receive data from sensors. The protocol translation is performed in the translation layer that is placed above the two application layers, i.e., the Internet application layer and ZigBee application layer. Among various interfaces, we use CGI programming to take care of translation functions efficiently. The CGI manages query information from a client on the Internet and data from the ZigBee sensor network. Whereas the TCP/IP enabled sensor network overlays two heterogeneous communication protocols, overlaying layers increase the complexity and cost of implementing the sensor network. On the contrary, the sensors in our gateway-based system are not only light (because each communication protocol works independently without overlaying), but also efficient because the translation layer mostly alleviates header overloading.

  • This paper proposes a partial BMA (Broadcasting Multiple Access) network structure and D-ARP (Distributed Address Resolution Protocol) method in order to support full mesh routing function in the DAMA (Demand Assigned Multiple Access)-based MF-TDMA (Multi Frequency-Time Division Multiple Access) satellite system. The partial BMA network enables legacy router devices and routing protocols to be adopted in the satellite communication system, and decreases the amount of routing protocol overhead. In addition, we introduce the D-ARP method that help a spoke satellite node acquiring the MAC (Media Access Control) address from remote satellite nodes in none BMA satellite network. The D-ARP method provides the MAC address of remote nodes to each other nodes through the broadcasting-enabled satellite channel. And we lastly evaluate and analysis the network performance of the proposed approach.

  • The improved performance and miniaturization of computer and the improvement of wireless communication technology have enabled the emergence of many high quality services. Among them multicast services are receiving much attention and their usage is increasing due to the increase of Internet multimedia services such as video conference, multimedia stream, internet TV, etc. Security plays an important role in mobile multicast services. In this paper, we proposed a secure multicast protocol for a hierarchical micro-mobility environment. The proposed secure multicast protocol provides security services such as authentication, access control, confidentiality and integrity using mechanisms including symmetric/asymmetric key crypto-algorithms and capabilities. To provide forward/backward secrecy and scalability, we used sub-group keys based on the hierarchical micro-mobility environment. With this security services, it is possible to guard against all kinds of security attacks performed by illegal mobile nodes. Attacks executed by internal nodes can be thwarted except those attacks which delete packet or cause network resources to be wasted. We used simulator to measure the performance of proposed protocol. As a result, the simulation showed that effect of these security mechanisms on the multicast protocol was not too high.
