  • An experimental study of hot machining has performed to improve themachinability of Inconel 718. This experiment used plasma arc for heating materials and Whisker-reinforced aluminum oxide ceramic tool insert. An assembled plasma heating system are described and experimental results obtained from bothconventional and plasma hot machining of Iconel 718 are compared. Turning experiments with plasma heating demonstrated the following effectiveness. 1) The cutting force was reduced with increasing surface temperature of workpiece from 450 .deg. C up to 720 .deg. C as much as approximately from 20 to 40%. 2) Surface roughness(Ra) was improved by as much as a factor 2 in case of one pass cutting with new ceramic tool inserts. 3) The depth of cut notchwear at primarycutting tool was singificantly reduced.

  • In an end milling process, the undeformed chip section area and cutting forces vary periodically with the phase change of the tool. However, the real undeformed chip section area deviates from the geometrically ideal one owing to the cutter runout and tool shape error. In the current study, a method of estimating the real undeformed chip section area which reflects the cutter runout and tool shape error is presented during up-end milling processes of Inconel 718. The specific cutting forces, $K_r$ and $K_t$ are defined as the radial and tangential cutting forces divided by the modified chip section area, respectively. Both of the $K_{r}$ and $K_t$ values become smaller as the helix angle increases from $30^{\circ}$ to $40^{\circ}$. Whereas they become larger as the helix angle increases from $40^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. The $K_r$ and $K_t$ values show a tendency to decrease with increase of the modified chip section area.a.

  • Productivity improvement and cost reduction in the aircraft industry have become major industrial objectives, and improving productivity by reducing machining time has become a key focus. When numerical cutting code is created by CAM software, such as CATIA or UG-NX, it is impossible to control machining feed speed using cutting force changes depending on the machining tool path. However, machining an aircraft engine part from difficult material, such as Inconel 718, takes a long time, and tool chipping or breakage often occurs from forcing the machining path too quickly. This study investigated and verified the reliability of the AdvantEdge production module (PM)using cutting power tests. In particular, diffuser and diffuser case parts were considered, comparing cutting power and machining time using AdvantEdge PM and CATIA.

  • Inconel 718 super alloy was aging heat treated at the temperature range from $675^{\circ}C$ to $785^{\circ}C$ for 5~40 hours after solution annealing at $1025^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The aging treated specimens were investigated microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal expansion/contraction. Precipitates appeared for a long time aging treatment were niobium carbide and also ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase. For the aging treatment time of 10 hours, the changes in strength and hardness with increasing aging treatment temperature showed the maximum value at the temperature of $725^{\circ}C$. This maximum value is to be related with the precipitation of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ and ${\gamma}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ phases. The decrease in strength, elongation and hardness during long time aging at $725^{\circ}C$ were thought to be induced from the coarsening of the grain size and the transformation of ${\gamma}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ phase to ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase. For the specimens treated for 10 hours, impact energy showed constant value of ~105 J with increasing the aging temperature, however this value continuously decreased with elapsing time at the aging temperature of $725^{\circ}C$. It was found that the decrease in impact value was induced from the coarsening of grain size and the carbide coarsening. The coefficient of thermal expansion of aging treated Inconel 718 alloy increased with raising test temperature, and the coefficient was appeared $11.57{\sim}12.09{\mu}m/m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$ and $14.28{\sim}14.39{\mu}m/m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$, respectively, after heating to $150^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$.

  • Wear and corrosion of the engine parts surrounded with combustion chamber is more serious compared to the other parts of the engine because temperature of the exhaust gas in a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. Therefore, an optimum repair weldment as well as an available choice of the base metal for these parts are very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. It reported that there was an experimental result for repair weldment on the forged steel which would be generally used with piston crown material, however, it is considered that there is no study for the repair weldment on the cast steel of piston crown material. In this study, four types of electrodes such as 1.25Cr-0.5Mo, 0.5Mo Inconel 625 and 718 were welded with SMAW and GTAW methods on the cast steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% $H_2SO_4$ solution. In the cases of Inconel 625, 718, the weld metals and base metals exhibited the best and worst corrosion resistance respectively, however, 1.25Cr-0.5Mo and 0.5Mo indicated that corrosion resistance of the base metal was better than the weld metal. And the weld metal welded with electrodes of Inconel 625 revealed the best corrosion resistance among the electrodes, and Inconel 718 followed the Inconel 625. Hardness relatively also indicated higher value in the weld metal compared to heat affected zone and base metal. In particular, Inconel 718 indicated the highest value of hardness compared to other electrodes in the heat affected zone.

  • The combustion chamber of a diesel engine is often exposed to a more serious wear and corrosion environment than other parts of the engine because its temperature increases as a result of using heavy oil of low quality. Therefore, repair and built-up welding methods must be performed on worn or corroded parts of the piston crown, exhaust valve, etc. from an economical point of view. In this study, Inconel 718 filler metal was used in repair welding on the groove of a forged steel specimen for a piston crown, along with built-up welding on the surface of another forged steel specimen. Then, the corrosion characteristics of the weld metal zone for the repair welding and the deposited metal zone for the built-up welding were investigated using electrochemical methods in a 35% H2SO4 solution. The deposited metal zone indicated better corrosion resistance than the weld metal zone, showing a nobler corrosion potential, higher impedance, and smaller corrosion current density. It is considered that metal elements with good corrosion resistance were generally included in the filler metal, and these elements were also greatly involved in the deposited meta by built-up welding, whereas the weld metal consisted of metal elements mixed with both the filler metal and base metal elements because of the molten pool produced by the repair welding. Finally, it is considered that the hardness of the weld metal was increased by the repair welding, whereas the built-up welding improved the corrosion resistance of the deposited metal.

  • In this study, a mechanistic model of cutting force components in up and down end milling process is presented. Using this cutting force model of 4-tooth endmills with various helix angles, cutting force variation of inconel 718 has been predicted. Predicted values of cutting force components are coincide well with the measured ones. As helix angle increases, overlapping effects of the active cutting edges increase. In up endmilling the magnitudes of radial and feed cutting force componts FX and FY are lowest when the helix angle is $40\{\circ}$, but in down endmilling the magnitudes of these values increase slightly as helix angle becomes large.

  • The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which is a chemically aggressive environment that is very corrosive for typical structural materials. So, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. In this study, corrosion behavior of Haynes 263, 75, and Inconel X-750, 718 in molten salt of $LiCl-Li_{2}O$ under oxidation atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C\;for\;72\sim360$ hours. At $3\;wt\%\;of\;Li_{2}O$, Haynes 263 alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys, and up to $8\;wt\%\;of\;Li_{2}O$, Haynes 75 exhibited the highest corrosion resistance. Corrosion products were formed $Li(Ni,Co)O_2,\;LiNiO_2\;and\;LiTiO_2\;and\;Cr_{2}O_3$ on Haynes 263, $Cr_{2}O_3,\;NiFe_{2}O_4,\;LiNiO_2,\;Li_{2}NiFe_{2}O_4,\;Li_{2}Ni_{8}O_10$ and Ni on Haynes 75, $Cr_{2}O_3,\;(Al,Nb,Ti)O_2,\;NiFe_{2}O_4,\;and\;Li_{2}NiFe_{2}O_4$ on Inconel X-750 and $Cr_{2}O_3,\;NiFe_{2}O_4\;and\;CrNbO_4$ on Inconel 718, respectively. Haynes 263 showed local corrosion behavior and Haynes 75, Inconel X-750, 718 showed uniform corrosion behavior.
