  • This paper introduces a new web based method to remotely upgrade firmwares of Cable Modems (CM) which are integral part in providing high-speed Internet access through Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks. Also, it discusses various practical problems arising in the upgrading process. Traditional upgrade has been performed by modifying the CM configuration fie. This paper shows a new web based CM firmware upgrade method using SNMP and MIB which greatly reduces upgrading time, cost and man-hour than traditional firmware upgrade methods. This method has been shown to be very efficient and practical. This method will make significant impact especially because tens of million cable modems are currently waiting to be upgraded soon to the next version from the current version.

  • Estimated number of adults and children newly infected with HIV-1 during 2001 alone is 5 million in total. An effective vaccine, in addition to education & public health approaches, has been believed to be the best option to stop the HIV-1 transmission, especially for developing countries. Among AIDS vaccine candidates, DNA vaccine is relatively safe and, in a certain extent, mimics some attributes of live attenuated vaccine, with regard to in vivo gene expression & the type of immunity induced. We recently demonstrated that DNA vaccines expressing SIVmac239 structural and regulatory genes, augmented with coadministration of IL-12 mutant induced the strongest T cell responses, resulting in low to undetectable setpoint viral loads, stable $CD4^+$ T cell counts, and no evidence of clinical diseases or mortality by day 420 after challenge. This finding is the second demonstration, following the protective result of live attenuated SIV vaccine in SIVmac-rhesus monkey model, which was known to have safety problem. So, our DNA vaccines could give a significant impact on HIV-1 epidemic by slowing or stopping the spread of HIV-1, leading to eventual eradication of HIV-1 and AIDS in the population.

  • A Hotchkiss spring has been widely utilized for commercial vehicle. Usually, the Hotchkiss spring has non-linear characteristics, i.e. it has a piecewise spring stiffness as well as hysterisis phenomenon. Therefore, the modeling of the Hotchkiss spring requires many considerations to fulfill satisfactory vehicle kinematic and dynamic relationships. Also, the spring has difficulties in modeling for presenting contact mechanism. In this paper, the modeling technique for the Hotchkiss spring has been descried. The modeling covers non-linear characteristics as well as contact problems for multi-body dynamic simulation. The force-displacement results are compared with experimental and FEM ones. Also, the comparison between three link type leaf spring model and proposed one has been considered in this paper.

  • This paper presents the statistical analysis and the effects of the ionospheric scintillation to the satellite communication system. By receiving 1.694 GHz carrier wave of telemetry signal transmitted from Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS-5) at both of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok. and Chiang Mai University, Thailand, in order to study the characteristics of Ionospheric scintillation in case of different geomagnetic latitude Position; the statistical analysis of S$_4$, fade duration. message reliability and fade rate can be obtained . The data was analyzed from february 2000 to January 2001

  • Servo drives with microcomputer control provide the possibility of using modern and sophisticated control algorithms. As an additional feature it is possible to implement parallel and/or redundant software and hardware structures to realise safe motion or similar security functions. Unfortunately microcomputer control also has some impact on the behaviour of servo drives. Control algorithm, cycle time, sensors and interface have to be perfectly synchronised. Special control schemes are necessary on the line side (power supply) to meet the actual requirements concerning EMC. This contribution presents experiences and results obtained from a modern digital drive system pointing out the influences of low and high accuracy position sensors and the interdependencies mentioned above.

  • Numerical analysis of the flowfield around a 50-meter class airship is performed to determine the optimal position for the airspeed probe installation. The turbulent flow around the hull with gondola is analyzed to examine the characteristics of the data measured by the probe attached to the gondola, and they turned out to show the nonlinear relation between the freestream and measured angles of attack and be influenced by the Reynolds number. New position of the hull nose was proposed and the effect of various factors on the flowfield around the nose was also examined. The analysis with a panel method showed that the effect of empennage was negligible, and the effect of gondola and boundary layer thickness had also little impact. It was shown that the freestream angle of attack would be the only independent variable for the probe position around the hull nose in constructing the calibration matrix.

  • We present the new jaw tracking system that utilizes five degrees of freedom of head and lower jaw. The proposed method does not disturb the physiology because the system does not need to fix magnetic field sensors or clutch on the patient's body or mouth. The impact of this result goes beyond the conventional optical and magnetic tracking system of jaw movement [1][2]. Position accuracy within 1mm and reasonable cost is necessary for practical use of the jaw tracking system. (omitted)

  • To carry out systematic groundwater assessment, exploration and management and to use these for protection of optimal groundwater yield, a data analysis and management system is required. Thus, the object of this research was to develop and apply software that integrates GIS and groundwater modeling: GISGAM (GIS for groundwater analysis and management system). The GIS program ArcView and the groundwater-modeling program MODFLOW were used for the GISGAM. The program components consist of a pre-processor, a processor, and a post-processor for groundwater modeling. In addition, GIS functions such as input, manipulation, analysis and output of data were embedded into the program. In applying the program to pilot area, topography, geology, soil, land use and well databases, and a groundwater flow model were constructed for the study area. This case study revealed the advantage and convenience of groundwater modeling using GIS capabilities. By integrating GIS and the groundwater model, the impact of changing values of hydrogeological constants on model results could be more easily evaluated.
