The shipping and shipbuilding industries have had business difficulties since the implementation of regulations on the CO2 emissions from ships by IMO and the occurrence of the global financial crisis in 2008. Under this global recession, most shipping firms have started to operate their fleets at slow steaming rates with the goal of improving the profit ratio per transported unit. This study analyzed the resistance performance of a 6,800 TEU container ship corresponding to its trim variation with slow steaming, compared with that at its original design speed. Two different grid systems were used for the numerical calculation, one that considered the free surface allowing the capture of the dynamic trim and one that did not. This made it possible to clearly classify each resistance component to provide useful information to hull-form designers. In addition, a form factor assumption method using CFD was used for a reasonable effective power prediction in compliance with the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method. It was found that the total resistance of a 6,800 TEU container ship was reduced by 2.6% in the case of a 1-m trim at the bow at 18 kn.

This study was carried out to improve the design of heat exchanger for small marine diesel engine. As air pollutants emitted from small marine diesel engine become international problem, IMO(International Marine Organization) tried to establish severe regulations for NOx reduction. The formation of NOx is affected by cooling system, for instance, such as intercooler, heat exchanger, exhaust manifold, and therefore cooling systems are one of essential parts for design of small marine diesel engine. In this study, heat exchanger for small marine diesel engine was modeled and simulated using CATIA V5R19 and ANSYS FLUENT V.13. Thermal flow simulation for heat exchanger was performed to find the optimal design. As the results, maximum velocity of engine coolant in shell inside was 9.1m/s and it was confirmed that outlet temperature and temperature drop for engine coolant could be calculated by simulating proportional relations of temperature between engine coolant and sea water.

This study was carried out to develop a diesel engine for marine propulsion. This marine diesel engine was developed based on a 500Ps vehicle diesel engine. Many main parts, such as the intercooler, radiator, and engine controller were designed for the marine diesel engine. The intercooler was designed to be of sea water cooling type; inlet air is cooled by sea water. Engine coolant is cooled by sea water in the radiator too. The water cooling heat exchanger has high cooling performance. In the cooling system, consists of the intercooler and the radiator, the sea water passes through the intercooler and then the radiator, in sequence. This process is very effective compared to the reverse method in which sea water passes through the radiator and then the intercooler, in sequence. The control performance of the engine controller and the fuel injection rate were improved using an engine speed controller. This system was tested on an engine dynamometer and an exhaust gas analyzer using the marine diesel engine test method. Test results show that the 500Ps marine diesel engine satisfied the IMO NOx regulations; Tier II.
Many port states, such as New Zealand, U.S.A., Australia, and Canada, have strict regulations to prevent arriving ships from discharging polluted ballast water that contains harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens. They are notified that transfer of polluted ballast water can cause serious injury to public health and damage to property and environment. For this reason, ballast exchange in deep sea is perceived as the most effective method of emptying ballast water. The ballast management plan contains the effective exchange method, ballast system, and safety considerations. In this study, we pursued both nautical engineering analysis and optimization of the algorithm, in order to generate the sequence of stability and rapidity. A heuristic algorithm was chosen on the basis of optimality and applicability to a sequential exchange problem. We have built an optimized algorithm for the automatic exchange of ballast water, by redefining core elements of the A$\ast$ algorithm, such as node, operator, and evaluation function. The final version of the optimized algorithm has been applied to existing bulk carrier, and the performance of the algorithm has been successfully verified.
Since 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has updated regulations on the sulfur content to be less than 0.5% in exhaust gas emitted from ships. Accordingly, the exhaust gas post-treatment device for ships, which is SOx/NOx reduction technology, was introduced. However, the exhaust gas post-treatment device is suffering corrosion because of the harsh corrosive environment formed by sulfate and chlorine oxide through the desulfurization process. In this investigation, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPDP) experiment for UNS S31603 and UNS N08367 was performed in a green death solution that simulates the environment of a desulfurization device. The corrosion rate of UNS S31603 at the highest temperature was about 3 times higher than that of UNS N83067. Also, electron microscope scan revealed corrosion type UNS N83067 presents intergranular corrosion tendency. On the other hand, UNS S31603 was observed as general corrosion. The α values of UNS N08367 at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃ were higher than those of UNS S31603, thus UNS N08367 is considered to have a higher local damage tendency. Whereas, since the α value of UNS S31603 at 90 ℃ is larger than that of UNS N08367, UNS S31603 is considered to have a higher local damage trend.

IMO(International Maritime Organization) continues to strengthen environmental regulations on exhaust gases such as CO2, NOx, SOx. As for sulfur oxides, from 1 January 2020, all ships on international voyages must use fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less. Or, it is obligatory to use an exhaust gas treatment device that has the same effect. Shipping companies are using low-sulfur oil, replacing them with LNG fuel, or installing scrubbers that suppress sulfur oxide emissions. In the case of ships using bunker C oil, the load on the engine is lower when entering and departing, so the exhaust gas pressure is lowered and the scrubber cannot be properly utilized. Therefore, diesel oil with low sulfur content is used when entering and leaving the coast. When diesel oil is used, exhaust gas is directly discharged through the control system and piping system, and when bunker C oil is used, sulfur oxides are reduced by scrubbers through other control systems and piping systems to discharge exhaust gas. Accordingly, a company has developed a system called a three-way damper valve that can control exhaust gas emissions while integrating these two control systems and piping systems into one. In this study, the control characteristics of the integrated exhaust gas control system and structural safety against external loads in a high-temperature exhaust gas environment were reviewed.
Purpose - The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has promulgated strict regulations on emissions in the maritime shipping industry. LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is, therefore, recognized as the optimal fuel alternative solution. The aim of this study is to select the most suitable location for an LNG bunkering port. This is formulated as a multiple-criteria ranking problem regarding four candidate ports in South Korea: the ports of Busan, Gwangyang, Incheon, and Ulsan. Design/Methodology/approach - An analysis employing the Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relation (CFPR) methodology is carried out, and the multiple-criteria evaluation of various factors influencing the location selection, such as the average loading speed of LNG, the number of total ships, the distance of the bunkering shuttle, and the degree of safety is performed. Then, based on the combination of both the collected real data and experts' preferences, the final ranking of the four ports is formulated. Findings - The port of Busan ranks first, followed by the ports of Gwangyang and Ulsan, with the port of Incheon last on the list. Originality/value - The Korean government could proceed with a clear vision of the candidate ports' ranking in terms of the LNG bunkering terminal selection problem.

Tonnage taxation has contributed to developing the Korean maritime industry through tax relief for shipping companies. The current tonnage taxation relies on the net tonnage as an earning-capacity indicator in a merchant ship. Although the tonnage tax accords with horizontal equity, it does not match vertical equity because of the different taxable capacities of an individual company. Nowadays, maritime transport uses a dedicated vessel, and each shipping freight embeds a different value of time. It means the tonnage taxation regime should consider the added value of each shipping freight. Meanwhile, as the environmental regulations led by the International Maritime Organization are being strengthened, the Korean merchant fleet must be eco-friendly soon after. This study explores the alternative to renewing tonnage taxation by utilizing the Greenship certification and considering the ability-to-pay principle. Because the Greenship certification scheme encourages shipping decarbonization, maritime transport by a certified ocean-going vessel comes to be treated as an activity for the green economy. Special taxation for the green economy may contribute to shipping sustainability and market competitiveness.
Diversified fuel types such as methanol, hydrogen, liquefied natural gas, ammonia, biofuels, have been come to fore in consideration of the limitations, regulations, environmental perception and efficient use of resources on maritime sector. NE is described as a substantial alternative energy source on the marine vessels in the sense of de-carbonization and fuel efficiency activities carried out by IMO. Although NPVs have been constructed for the merchant, navy and supply fields over the years, their numbers are few and working ranges are quite limited. NE generation techniques, reactor types, safety and security issues in case of any leakage or radiation pollution are analyzed and comparisons are performed between fossil-based fueled and NP based on icebreakers. The comparison are conducted on the basis of dimensions, resistances and operational competences by the VIKOR. NP icebreakers operated in recent years occupy a notable position in the ranking, although fossil fueled ones are most prevalent. Consequently, refueling period and emissions are the principal benefits of NPVs. Nevertheless, the use of such systems on marine vessels especially for merchant ships may come to the fore when all concerns in terms of safety, security and society are resolved since the slightest mistake can have irreversible consequences.

Due to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) environmental regulations on NOx and SOx, LNG-fueled eco-friendly ships are gaining attention worldwide, and various eco-friendly ships are being proposed and demanded for conversion to eco-friendly ships in Korea, as the eco-friendly ship law has recently been enforced. In this study, the initial basic design was performed to convert an existing Marine Gas Oil (MGO) fueled ship into an LNG-DF propulsion ship, targeting medium-sized ship, to select the fuel tank capacity and main dimensions and appropriate fuel ratio between the two fuels. In particular, Sustainable basic design method considering environmental impact were proposed by performing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) throughout the design process, and various design options were compared and analyzed to meet different design conditions by applying them.
