  • Estimation of inflow rates into subsection of a tunnel is establishing the proposed grouting part, measuring the degree of grouting, and settling the dispute over deplrtion of groundwater which may be resulted from tunneling. A current meter was used to calculate inflow rates of groundwater to each subsection of the tunnel. The study area is composed of section 1 and 2 of Imha-Youngchun waterway trnnel which has 32.976km length, with each section having 3,745m and 4,079m, respectively. The depth from groung surface to tunnel ranges from 122.45m to 358.3m. Total inflow rates of groundwater into each section measured three times by the current meter, together with bottle and eye measurement, were compared with groundwater inflow rates of each section measured by datalogger. The calcuated inflow rates of the sections by bottle and eye measurement were 8.8%∼54.7% of inflow rate (averaging 27,4%), whwewas those by the current meter were 76.9%∼110.6%(averaging 92.9%). Therfore, the current meter is regarded as useful method to calculate groundwater inflow rates into subsections of a tunnel.

  • This article is concentrated on the organization for labor exchange in producing hemp cloth at Geumso-ri, Imha-myoun, Andong city. The organization is called "Sam-dool-ge", and it is different from the organization for labor exchange in producing rice because it is managed by women mostly. ln harvesting hemp, same amount of labor and expenses are invested. Especially, labor is supplied in equal condition. In spinning hemp cloth, the work is shared on the basis of same tech level. In threading the warp and fastening hemp cloth. the work conducted collaborately under the best engineer's direction. "Sam-dool-ge", a gil-sam labor exchange, also presents cultural creativity which produces and inherits the folkloric tradition, and also has the quality as a rite of passage. Nowadays, producing hem cloth is for pursuiting of profits than for making clothes as it used to be. This tradition will be lasted at least for a while because some young generations are beginning to participate in and old generation is teaching them good.

  • Changes of geomorphology in alluvial river and vegetation recruitment on its floodplain downstream from dams are investigated both qualitatively and quantitatively focusing on the downstream of Andong dam and Imha dam on the Nakdong River. Results of the analyses of river morphology and bed material in the study site show a general trend of riverbed degradation with a max scour of 3 m and bed material coarsening from pre-dam value of 1.5 mm in D50 to post-dam value of 2.5 mm. Decrease in bed shear stress due to the decrease in flood discharge have caused vegetation recruitment on the once-naked sandbars. As result, the ratio of area of vegetated bars over total area of bars has drastically changed from only 7% in 1971 before the Andong dam (constructed in 1976) to 25% after it, and increased to 43% only three year after the Imha dam (constructed in 1992) and eventually to 74% by 2005. Analysis of the vegetation succession at Wicjeol subreach, one of the three subreaches selected in this study for detailed investigation, has clearly shown a succession of vegetation on once-naked sand bars to a pioneering stage, reed and grass stage, willow shrub and eventually to willow tree stages. At the second subreach selected, two large point bars in front of Hahoe Village seem to have maintained their sand surfaces without a signifiant vegetation recruitment until 2005. The sand bars, however, seem to have been invaded by vegetation recently, which warns river managers to have a countermeasure to protect the sand bars from vegetation invasion in order to conserve them for the historical village of Hahoe. On the other hand, recruitment and establishment of vegetation on the sand bars by artificial disturbance of the river, such as damming, can create an unique habitat of backmarsh in the sandy river, as shown in the case of Gudam Wetland, and may increase the biodiversity as compared with relatively monotonous sand bars. Last, the premise in this study that decrease in flood discharge due to upstream dams and decrease in bed shear stress can induce vegetation recruitment on the naked sand bars in the river has been verified with the analyses of the distribution of dimensionless bed shear stress along the selected cross section in each subreach.

  • In this study, flood runoff characteristics is analyzed according to subbasin divisions by physically based rainfall-runoff model and appropriate number of subbasin divisions is suggested for midsize test basins. The Clark method, a lumped model in HEC-HMS, and the ModClark method, a semi-distributed model are used to simulate rainfall-runoff processes on Andong-reservoir basin, Imha-reservoir basin, and Pyeongchang river basin. The test basins were divided into nine subdivision cases by equal-area subdivision method such as single basin, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 15 subbasins, and compared the simulated and observed values in terms of the peak flow and the peak time. The simulation results indicated that the peak flows tended to increase and the peak time shifted earlier as the number of subdivisions increased and this tendency weakened after the certain number of subdivisions. In this research, the specific number of subdivision was defined as the minimum number of subdivision considering both peak flow and peak time. Consequently, the minimum number of subdivisions is determined as 5 for Andong and Imha reservoir basins and 7 for Pyeongchang river basin.

  • In this study, the model enhancing the safety of reservoirs and reducing the downstream flood damage by reservoirs system operation during abnormal flood was developed. Linear programming was used for the optimal reservoirs system operation during an abnormal flood and fuzzy inference system was introduced to solve the uncertainty problem which is included in hydrological factors like inflow, water level and inflow variation of reservoir operation. The linear programming model determined the optimal reservoir system operation rules and could be used in situation where water demands varies rapidly during the abnormal flood events using fuzzy control technique. In this study, the optimal reservoirs system operation for Andong and Imha reservoirs located in the upper basin of Nakdong river was performed in order that the design flood discharge at Andong city would not be exceeded for the design flood of 100 year and PMF(Probable Maximum Flood). And the model that determines the release according to the downstream flow discharge, the reservoir storage, the inflow and the inflow variation of each reservoir was developed using the optimal system operation result and fuzzy control technique. The developed model consisted of 224 fuzzy rules according to the conditions of Andong reservoir, Imha reservoir and Andong city. And the release from each reservoir could be determined when the current data are used as input data through the developed GUI.

  • For a basin with existing reservoirs, the necessity of additional water demands has been proposed, as well as a reevaluation of existing reservoir yield has been proposed. The objective of this study is to reevaluate a multipurpose reservoir yield and to assess the possibility of additional water supply according to increase of downstream water demands. Andong and Imha Reservoirs are selected for reevaluation. The standard reservoir operation rule model and the HEC-ResSim model were used for reservoir simulation for 30 years (1979~2008). In this study, water supply reliability was set up as 96.7% and 95.0% with yearly and monthly evaluating unit. In case of 95% water supply reliability with yearly evaluating unit, water supply capability of Andong reservoir was evaluated as 893MCM and water supply capability of Imha reservoir was evaluated as 382MCM, and that results showed that water yields for both reservoirs are less than the original designed yields.

  • Benefit transfer is a method, which obtains an estimate for the economic valuation of non-marketed commodities at a given site through the analysis of studies that have been previously carried out to value similar commodities at a different location. The objective of this study was to estimate benefit transfer values for the construction of the integrated sewerage system in the catchment area of dams in Korea. For pooled data analysis, five models were suggested in this study. Among five models, model 2 showed only 6 to 7% errors when the willingness-to-pay(WTP) predicted in the policy-site, Dam Soyang was compared with that estimated using contingent valuation method(CVM) in the study-sites, Dams Namgang, Hapcheon, and Daecheong. However, the WTP estimate predicted by model 1 showed the absolute errors of 42 to 47% when it was compared with WTP estimated using CVM in Dams Andong and Imha. It seemed that residents of Dams Andong and Imha have feeling of being victimized since two dams were constructed very adjacently, the upstream area was designated as drinking water source protection zone, and thereafter their developmental economical actions have been significantly restricted.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze design flood estimation methods which are the basis for determining the size of a flood control structure. The result from a flood frequency analysis which is considered as the best way for estimating design flood was assumed as a true value, and a method of simulating runoff and performing frequency analysis of the maximum discharge data were compared with a design storm method. For a comparative analysis of design flood estimation, seven basins (Namgang reservoir basin, Soyanggang reservoir basin, Andong reservoir basin, Seomjingang reservoir basin, Imha reservoir basin, Chungju reservoir basin, Hapcheon reservoir basin) were selected. For the Seomjingang, Hapcheon, and Imha reservoir basins, the method proposed in this study showed better results, whereas the conventional method showed better results for the Namgang, Soyanggang, and Chungju reservoir basins. The results show that the conventional method (the design storm method) is not the best way for estimating design flood and the proposed method can be used as an alternative for small basins.
