  • A variety of BIM libraries are required to apply BIM(Building Information Modeling) software and generate BIM data. However, enterprises are establishing their own libraries using BIM tools, the drawbacks are that these libraries are not open to other users, or they just can be used in some software packages. If IFC(Industry Foundation Classes), the standard format of open BIM, can be applied, the BIM library can be applied in all the BIM software packages. Although the enterprises can collaborate using IFC standard, it is difficult to represent all the property information of the construction materials by IFC. IFD(International Framework for Dictionaries) is used to solve these problems and add the property information of the construction materials easily. Therefore, Open RIM-based library needs to be developed using IFD. In this research, the development and application of BIM library and IFD in domestic and foreign countries were investigated and analyzed, and Open BIM-based IFD scenario was proposed for using, and finally by applying an IFD method, the IFD data was added within an IFC model. Consequently, Open BIM-based library can be extended with rich, formal, and semantic descriptions and enhance data interoperability among BIM software packages adopting Open BIM standard format, by applying the IFD.

  • Construction industries have increasingly utilized Building information Modeling (BIM) technologies. Interoperability - the capability for BIM data to run from one computer application to another in the life cycle of a project - has become one of the principal research areas. Enhancing interoperability inevitably requires information structures that are standardized throughout the construction industries. As a candidate of the data exchange standard, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) has been developed and several researches recently performed to measure its richness of digital data exchange. But doubts have been brought up whether IFC meets a sufficient level of interoperability since the research result revealed a number of cases of information misrepresentation and loss. This research presents the lessons learned from the interoperability tests of three widely used 3D design applications including Graphisoft's Archicad, Autodesk's Revit, and Bentley's Bentley Architecture. One building's architectural and structural design data were modeled with the three tools and exchanged through IFC respectively for interoperability test.

  • Recently, Productivity of the construction industry has been decreasing than other industries. Because of this, BIM is being spread in the construction industry. However, quality criteria for BIM data is insufficient. Regulation information is an important factor for initial architectural design evaluations. However, building code and related regulation are numerous. National building code structure in Korea is much more complex than other countries. The purpose of this study is to suggest the typology method of building code and apply to real regulations. To achieve this purpose, the authors have extracted required information to from original regulation for code checking and suggested mapping methods between extracted information and information of IFC scheme. In addition, the authors have represented EXPRESS-G diagram for extracting information from IFC scheme and suggested code checking method through stair case. Output of this study can be used as a base line data for automated code checking system based on open BIM. Automated code checking system will be utilized in architectural design evaluations and supported to increase design quality. It can be used to mount in SEUMTER that is the construction administration system of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT).

  • IFC based open BIM has internationally developed as a solution for interoperability problem among different software applications. Despite much interest and effort, the open BIM technologies are rarely introduced to the construction industry and need more technical development for a practical application as well. This research aims to develop automated code checking modules for quality assurance process of BIM data. The research have analyzed domestic regulations focusing on super-tall buildings and developed open BIM-based code checking modules for the evacuation regulations. The modules are able to validate evacuation regulations such as installation of emergency elevator and fire safety zone. The authors expect to improve the process of BIM quality assurance and enhance the quality of BIM data by this research on automated checking system.

  • The Architecture, engineering & construction (AEC) industry domains have grown more complex and larger. BIM is a digital representation of a building to facilitate the exchange and development of construction information integration and interoperability. Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs), under development by International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI), represent the part of buildings or elements of a process. IFC has been adopted as a central information repository in order to deliver integrated information. BIM softwares could open the IFC file, recognize standard objects. However, sometimes, information distortion or information loss occurs during information exchange. As project participants exchange BIM information by using BIM softwares they will need a reliable and efficient exchange of information. This paper suggests the BIM object information compatibility problems among BIM softwares and classify the BIM object information compatibility problems.

  • Recently, the needs for sharing and exchanging drawing information between 2D and 3D data in complex facilities are well recognized throughout the construction industries. The purpose of this study is to propose an information framework to represent 3D IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) -based drawing of building services in complex facilities as 2D drawing. In this study, 1) attributes of building service objects which are used in 3D CAD system are analyzed and present drawing standards are analyzed, 2) based on the analysis, an information framework is developed to represent 3D model in 2D representation, and 3) further more, to test a compatibility of the information sharing framework, number of standardized APIs and an IFC2Dbrowser are developed during the study.

  • In order to improve the productivity in the civil engineering field, efforts to apply BIM have been continuing, however, research on information modeling of tunnel structures considering alignment is insufficient. In this study, we proposed the method of building tunnel models reflecting curved alignment by transferring point data to BIM Authoring Tools(BAT) through discretization of alignment in Alignment-centered Modeling Tools(AMT). IFC data schema was derived to consider the physical and spatial elements of tunnel structures and alignment and IFC-based information management for tunnel alignment, tunnel structures and ground conditions was possible by referring to the extended data schema and including meanings in IFC property sets. The ratings for ground condition in Rock Mass Rating(RMR) and Q-system was automatically derived by using generated information model according to the proposed method.

  • Information sharing is the main purpose of realizing interoperability between the application domains of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper presents and describes the workflow of BIM-GIS interoperability for highway traffic information sharing. An innovative and automatic Dynamo process was presented to transfer the shapes and attributes of the shapefile from GIS to BIM. On the basis of the transformed BIM model, the detailed traffic data was added and expressed in the form of families and sheets to expand traffic information. Then, the shapes of the model were swept as solid geometries in the BIM environment applying Dynamo. The expanded BIM model was transferred back to the GIS system using the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) scheme. The mutual communication between BIM and GIS was achieved based on Dynamo and IFC. This paper provides a convenient and feasible way to realize BIM-GIS interoperability for highway traffic information sharing according to the characteristics of highways in terms of graphic expression and model creation.
