  • Portable Internet extended from wireless LAN has a large cell size, similar to a wireless mobile communication, and can provides the seamless service which offers middle-low speed mobility. IEEE 802.16e, the international standard of Portable Internet, uses PKMv2(Privacy Key Management) protocol for authorization and key exchange between a MSS(Mobile Subscriber Station) and a BS(Base Station). This paper first reviews and studies overall security architecture of TTA HPi standard and IEEE 802.16e which supports mobility based on WMAN(Wireless Metropolitan Area Network) standard(IEEE 802.16)

  • The IEEE 802.16 wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) standard is designed to correct expensive communication costs in CDMA-based mobile communication systems and limited coverage problems in wireless LAN systems. Thus, the IEEE 802.16e standard can provide mobile high-speed packet access between mobile stations and the Internet service provider through the base station with cheap communication fees. To efficiently accommodate voice over IP (VoIP) services in IEEE 802.16 systems, an uplink quality of service packet-scheduling scheme is proposed, and its performance is evaluated with an NS-2 network simulator in this paper. Numerical results show that this proposed scheme can increase the system capacity by 100% more than in the unsolicited rand service (UGS) scheme and 30% more than the extended real-time polling service (ertPS) scheme, respectively.

  • The IEEE 802.16-2004 standard has a security sub-layer in the MAC layer called, Privacy Key Management (PKM). However, several researches have been published to address the security vulnerabilities of IEEE 802.16-2004. After the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, a new advanced and revised standard was released as the IEEE 802.16e-2005 amendment which is foundation of Mobile WiMAX network supporting handoffs and roaming capabilities. PKMv2 in Mobile WiMAX includes EAP authentication, AES-based authenticated encryption, and CMAC or HMAC message protection. However, Mobile WiMAX still has a problem of security architecture such as a disclosure of security context in network entry, a lack of secure communication in network domain, and a necessity of efficient handover supporting mutual authentication because Mobile WiMAX security has mainly concentrated on between SS and BS communication. Based on the investigation results, we propose a novel mobile WiMAX security architecture, called RObust and Secure MobilE WiMAX (ROSMEX), to prevent the new security vulnerabilities.

이러한 PKMv2는 EAP(Extensible Authentication Protocol) 인증, AES(Advanced Encryption Standard) 기반 기밀성 제공 알고리즘, CMAC/HMAC(Cipher/Hashed Message Authentication Code)을 사용한 메시지 인증 기능 제공 등 보다 다양한 보안 기능을 제공하였다.

  • IEEE 802.16e standard defines different Sleep Mode Operations according to kind of services which aims at saving energy for MS efficiently. The previous study of Sleep Mode Operation is limited for single service environment, real sleep interval is decreased because different Sleep Mode Operations are applied at once when MS is on multi service. The proposed Enhanced Sleep Mode Operation increasing real sleep interval of this paper guarantees QoS(Quality of Services) which is same as standard, minimizes energy consumption when different Sleep Mode Operations are applied at once. Therefore Enhanced Sleep Mode Operation of this paper will be useful in case of increase battery life time as well as guaranteeing QoS for MS in IEEE 802.16 system.

  • IEEE 802.16e standard, a kind of WMAN standard, was established to support data services with cheaper cost to mobile users than traditional mobile communications system and wireless LAN system can do. In this paper, we propose an uplink QoS packet-scheduler for VoIP service which can be installed in IEEE 802.16 system and evaluate its performance with NS-2 network simulator. The proposed QoS packet-scheduler consists of three procedures: determining scheduler interval, determining the amount of resource assignment, and deciding which mobile station the base station should serve first among multiple mobile stations. According to numerical results, the proposed QoS packet-scheduler can provide more increased system capacity by 220% than UGS service scheme does and by 25 % than ertPS service scheme does.

  • IEEE 802.16j MR networks introduce RSs (Relay Stations) within the IEEE 802.16 system in order to enhance the data throughput and extend the coverage. However, the current standardization defines that the BS (Base Station) controls MS's (Mobile Station's) handover, not only it induces the large signaling overhead but also handover latency could increase. In this paper, we propose a handover protocol in the MR networks where the high capability RSs that can process the MS's control functions are deployed. First, we classify the handover scenarios for the MR networks with the high capability RSs. Then, we define the MAC handover procedure, corresponding MAC management messages and the transmission routes for the proposed messages so that an 802.16e MS can perform seamless handover without noticing it is attached to an MR network. The simulation results show that the proposed handover protocol not only reduces the MAC management message overhead transferred through the wireless links compared to IEEE 802.16j/D1, which is the current standard for MR networks, but also performs the rapider and more secure MS handover than IEEE 802.16e and IEEE 802.16j/D1.

  • Power saving is one of the most important features that extends the lifetime of portable devices in mobile wireless networks. The IEEE 802.16e mobile broadband wireless access system adopts a power saving mechanism with a binary truncated exponent algorithm for determining sleep intervals. When using this standard power saving scheme, there is often a delay before data packets are received at the mobile subscriber station (MSS). In order to extend the lifetime of a MSS, the battery energy must be used efficiently. This paper presents a dynamically alternating sleep interval scheduling algorithm as a solution to deal with the power consumption problem. We take into account different traffic classes and schedule a proper sequence of power saving classes. The window size of the sleep interval is calculated dynamically according to the packet arrival rate. We make a tradeoff between the power consumption and packet delay. The method achieves the goal of efficiently reducing the listening window size, which leads to increased power saving. The performance of our proposed scheme is compared to that of the standard power saving scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our power saving scheme and its ability to strike the appropriate performance balance between power saving and packet delay for a MSS in an IEEE 802.16e mobile broadband wireless access system.

  • We observe simultaneous transmission of relay stations (RSs) allowed in current IEEE 802.16j draft standard for multi-hop relay networks may involve severe interference among the RSs, hence leading to throughput degradation. Allowing only 1/3 of the RSs to simultaneously transmit instead of 1/2 RSs as in the current draft standard reduces the interference but results in reduced throughput. To remedy this problem, we devise schemes to incorporate network coding at link-layer level (decode-and-forward) into the simultaneous transmission of RSs. Data movement is rearranged to maximize coding gain. Formula is derived to dictate exact movement of packets traveling between base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs) via intermediate RSs. The frame structure in the current IEEE 802.16j draft standard does not allow broadcast needed for network coding. We devise a new frame structure which supports the broadcast. A new R-MAP (pointers to the burst data) is introduced to implement the broadcast. Since our new frame structure is used only for BS to RS or RS to RS communication, our schemes retain backward compatibility with legacy MSs based on IEEE 802.16e standard. Simulation based on simple configuration of RSs shows considerable improvement in terms of system throughput and round trip delay. For a 4-hop relay network with 1 BS and 4 RSs with symmetric traffic in uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), throughput is improved by 49% in DL and by 84% in UL traffic compared with IEEE 802.16j draft standard under the assumption that omni-directional antennae are used in BS and RSs.
