  • IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) became a prevailing technology for the broadband wireless Internet access, and new applications such as Voice over WLAM (VoWLAN) are fast emerging today. For the battery-powered VoWLAN devices, the standby time extension is a key concern for the market acceptance while today's 802.11 is not optimized for such an operation. In this paper, we propose a novel Idle Mode operation, which comprises paging, idle handoff, and delayed handoff. Under the idle mode operation, a Mobile Host (MH) does not need to perform a handoff within a predefined Paging Area (PA). Only when the MH enters a new PA, an idle handoff is performed with a minimum level of signaling. Due to the absence of such an idle mode operation, both IP paging and Power Saving Mode (PSM) have been considered the alternatives so far even though they are not efficient approaches. We implement our proposed scheme in order to prove the feasibility. The implemented prototype demonstrates that the proposed scheme outperforms the legacy alternatives with respect to energy consumption, thus extending the standby time.

  • WLAN virtualization can make multiple simultaneous experiments, each of which is conducted by a separate researcher, share scarce wireless resources in an IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The experiment performed in a virtualized WLAN should be consistent with that in a non-virtualized WLAN. The more similar these two experimental results, the better the consistency. To this end, we propose a novel virtualization scheme that has good consistency by preventing multiple simultaneous experiments from interacting with one another, without any modifications to the IEEE 802.11 standard. Through an intensive simulation study, we confirm that the consistency depends not only on the number of simultaneous experiments but also on wireless channel characteristics such as Doppler frequency and Ricean factor. According to such dependencies, the proposed scheme is optimized, so that it supports good consistency.

  • It has been prevalent to be serviced through WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) as a variety of mobile devices have been introduced. If the number of mobile devices increases rapidly for the network access in a limited range of ESS(Extended Service Set), a lengthy connection delays are induced due to the initial link setup process of the IEEE 802.11i which is WLAN security standard. In this paper, we propose a new initial link setup protocol which can be executed in the ESS area of WLAN.

  • This paper addressed the implementation of the systematic performance analysis of Quality of Service (QoS) by using OPNET simulator in the interworking architecture of IEEE 802.16e (mobile WiMAX) and IEEE 802.11e (WLAN) wireless network. Four simulation cases were provided in OPNET simulator and a voice traffic was simulated with various performance metrics, such as Mean Opinion Score (MOS), end-to-end delay and packet transmission ratio. Based on the simulation results, the MOS value presented better in WiMAX to WiMAX case compared to others in both static and mobility case. Meanwhile, end-to-end delay was not greatly affected by mobility in four cases. However, mobility was affected much in MOS value and packet transmission ratio in WLAN to WLAN case than in others.

  • Backward compatibility is one of the key issues for radio equipment supporting IEEE 802.11, the typical wireless local area networks (WLANs) communication protocol. For a successful packet decoding with the backward compatibility, the frame format detection is a core precondition. This paper presents a novel frame format detection method based on a deep learning procedure for WLANs affiliated with IEEE 802.11. Considering that the detection performance of conventional methods is degraded mainly due to the poor performances in the symbol synchronization and/or channel estimation in low signal-to-noise-ratio environments, we propose a novel detection method based on convolutional neural network (CNN) that replaces the entire conventional detection procedures. The proposed deep learning network provides a robust detection directly from the receive data. Through extensive computer simulations performed in the multipath fading channel environments (modeled by Project IEEE 802.11 Task Group ac), the proposed method exhibits superb improvement in the frame format detection compared to the conventional method.

  • According to the convenience and efficiency, IEEE 802.11 WLAN(Wireless LAN) has became rapidly wide-spread on the market. However, QoS support is needed for various multimedia service. In this paper, we consider both MAC method of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.11e and Traffic Category differentiated service by QoS support method. In addition, we study currently existing back-off algorithms in view of comparative analysis. As a result we propose a new back-off algorithm called Collision Rate Based-EDCF. The proposed back-off algorithm confirms the performance by computer simulations in terms of Throughput, and QoS support.

  • In recent year, the popularity of WLAN has generated much interests on improvement and performance analysis of the IEEE 802.11 protocol. In this paper, we analyze two medium access methods of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol by investigating the MAC layer packet service times when arrival packet sizes have a general probability distribution. We use the M/G/1/K queueing model to analyze the throughput and the delay performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in a wireless LAN. We compare the performances of Basic access method and RTS/CTS access method. We take some numerical examples for the system throughput and the queue dynamics including the mean packet delay and packet blocking probability.

  • It is necessary to provide a fast and secure handover for seamless real-time multimedia services based on IEEE 802.11. In this paper, we propose FMIPv6 handoff protocol integrating L2/L3 layer based on IEEE 802.11 WLAN environment. In that, we propose a hierarchical key management scheme and authentication mechanism for protecting the handover signaling messages. The number of connections with AAA server is minimized for the fast handover. It is also compared and analyzed the handover cost with previous method.

MAC(Medium Access Control)계층 중 기본적인 매체 접근 방식인 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function)는 CSMA/CA 알고리즘을 이용하여 충돌문제를 해결한다.
