  • This study measures the change of ice flow velocity of David Glacier, one of the fast-moving glaciers in East Antarctica that drains through Drygalski Ice Tongue. In order to effectively observe the rapid flow velocity, we applied the offset tracking technique to Sentinel-1A SAR images obtained from 2016 to 2020 with 36-day temporal baseline. The resulting velocity maps were averaged and the two relatively fast points (A1 and A2) were selected for further time-series analysis. The flow velocity increased during the Antarctic summer (around December to March) over the four years' observation period probably due to the ice surface melting and reduced friction on the ice bottom. Bedmap2 showed that the fast flow velocities at A1 and A2 are associated with a sharp decrease in the ice surface and bottom elevation so that ice volumetric cross-section narrows down and the crevasses are being created on the ice surface. The local maxima in standard deviation of ice velocity, S1 and S2, showed random temporal fluctuation due to the rotational ice swirls causing error in offset tracking method. It is suggested that more robust offset tracking method is necessary to incorporate rotational motion.

  • This paper describes the characteristic analysis of ice impact force for the Arctic structure shape. In the present study an energy method has been used to predict the impact force during the ice-structure collision. This study also employs two concepts for reference contact area and normalized stress in analysis procedure. The influences of factors, such as impact velocity, full penetration depth, structure shape and ice floe size, are investigated. Full penetration occurs, particularly at lower impact velocity when ice thickness increase. But "typical size" ice floe does not expected ever to achieve full penetration during the impact procedure. The structure shape is the dominant factor in ice impact force characteristic. The results for various ice-structure collision scenarios are analyzed.

  • A numerical method is proposed to simulate level ice interaction with ship in transverse and longitudinal directions in time domain. A novel method is proposed to simulate non-symmetric transverse force in a stochastic way. On the basis of observations from the model tests, the simulation of longitudinal force combines the ice bending force acting on the waterline, submersion force below the waterline and ice friction forces caused by transverse force and ice floes rotation amidships. In the simulations the ship was fixed and towed through an intact ice sheet at a certain speed. The setup of the numerical simulation is similar to the ice tank setup as much as possible. The simulated results are compared with model tests data and the results show good agreement with the measurement.

  • In this study, a fatigue damage estimation for an ice-going vessel navigating through broken ice fields was carried out. A numerical model to simulate the interaction between ice and structure developed using the finite element method was introduced. Time series of stresses calculated by the proposed model and the corresponding fatigue analysis results are presented. The numerical model enables the long time analysis through an efficient interaction model, the application of the periodic media analysis and the convolution integral, and it allows the stress time history to be extracted directly using the finite element method. To describe the probability distribution of stress amplitudes, the 2-parameter Weibull model was applied to the calculated stress time history, and the fatigue damage was calculated using the Palmgren-Miner rule. Finally, the fatigue damage considering the ice conditions of the Baltic Sea was calculated using the proposed method and LR method, and the results were compared to each other.

  • An experimental study was performed to measure a ice concentration of ice slurry flowing in a pipe in a real time. In the present paper, we suggested a measuring method by a refractive index and compared it to other methods by a freezing point and a density. To measure the refractive index of the solution, ice particles in the ice slurry should be completely removed and a hydro-cyclone was introduced instead of a mesh. The measuring method through the refractive index coincided with the density method using the real-time solution density within ${\pm}5%$ error range, having the error range less than the other two methods. In the other hand, the measuring method through the density has a good resolution, but the result using the initial density of the solution was different more than 10% error from that using the real-time density. And it has an error range 1.5 times greater than the method through the refractive index.

  • Generation and measurement methods of EG/AD model ice, which is used in KIOST ice model basin are investigated for improvement of its properties. Temperature of seed water, air temperature in the freezing phase and the target air temperature in the tempering phase were changed in the cold room, and the properties of model ice was measured in this conditions. We also verified a conventional measuring method of flexural strength of model ice caused a little measuring error in cold room, so that we suggested a new measuring method that must be used higher supports than double the thickness of the model ice. In this study, we improved the generation and measurement technique of EG/AD model ice, and the developed procedure at cold room can be applied to the KIOST ice model basin.

  • The strength assessment is the most important part at the design of ice-class propeller. Based on ice rules for ice-class propeller in IACS URI3 and FEM, the strength assessment method of ice-class propeller is established in this paper. To avoid the multifarious meshing process of propeller blade, an automatic meshing method has been developed by dividing the propeller geometry into a number of 8-node hexahedron elements along radial, chordwise and thickness directions, then the loaded areas in five cases can easily be calculated and identified. The static FEM is applied to calculate the stress and deformation of propeller blade. The fair agreements between the results of the present method and ANSYS/Workbench demonstrate its robust and the feasibility, and also the method is able to produce smooth gradient field. The blade stress and deformation distributions for five load cases are studied, and then the strength of the whole blade is checked.

  • The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) has an ice tank to make a test environment similar to the real ice in the polar sea in order to carry out model tests. One of the most important task of the ice tank is to generate the model ice to have similar material properties as sea ice. The primary properties of sea ice which influence the ice performance of ice breakers and ice-strengthened vessels traveling in the polar sea are ice thickness, flexural strength, density, modulus of elasticity and crystal structure etc. Among them, since the density of model ice influences the buoyance resistance of ice for the ship model, the accurate measurement of ice density should be used to obtain the accurate analysis results from the model test. In this paper, some existing methods to measure the density of model ice are reviewed and a new one is proposed to measure it accurately and easily as possible. In this study, the measuring system including an UTM and several measuring devices was established to obtain the model ice density. Polyethylene and ice specimens are used for a series of repeatable measurement tests. From the results, it was recognized that both of the displacement method and the weight/weight methods gave the stable and favorable tendency.

  • The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.

  • We propose a new framework which expresses the mist and scratches of cracked ice by an impact. We combine the grid projection technique, boundary particles method, and level-set method commonly used in fluid simulations to determine the region on the surface of an ice object which is affected by a collision. Mist is then generated in proportion to the impact, and immediately diffused, using a geodesic distance field to limit dissipation. The gradient of the mist is subsequently used to create realistic patterns of scratches and elongated air bubbles. Cracks of the ice object can also be considered, and the density of the mist made to vary realistically between fragments. As a result, our method not only represents high-quality ice effects, but also allows easy integration into existing rigid body simulation solvers.
