  • In measuring EEG, which is widely used for studying brain function, EEG is frequently mixed with noise and artifact. In this study, the signals relevant to the artifact were distracted by applying ICA to EEG signal. First, each independent component which was assumed to be the source was separated by applying ICA to EEG which involved artifact relevant to the eye movement of a normal person. Next, the signal which was assumed to be artifact was removed from the separated 18 independent components, and the nonlinear analysis method such as correlation dimension and the Iyapunov exponent was applied to each reconstructed EEG signal and the original signal including artifact in order to find meaningful difference between the two signals and infer the anatomical localization of its source and distribution. This study shows it is possible not only to analyze the brain function visually and spatially for visually complex EEG signal, but also to observe its meaningful change through the quantitative analysis of EEG by means of the nonlinear analysis.

  • Recently, u-healthcare device is developed and commercialized for healthcare management and emergency medical. The kinds of the measurable biomedical signals on the device are electrocardiogram, skin temperature, pulse oxygen, heart rate, respiration, etc. Specially, the photoplethysmograph(PPG) signal of these signals is the important signal in measuring oxygen, heart rate and peripheral vascular compliance. The accuracy of PPG signal reduce from influence of the motion artifacts that generated from the movements of user or patient. Therefore, this study suggests a new method to remove the motion artifact that is using optical power modulation and ICA(Independent Component Analysis). For analyzing the proposed method, we used variety of noises made by artificially. In the results of experiments, the proposed method showed good performances than an adaptive filter.

  • For audio indexing and targeted search of specific audio or corresponding visual contents, the MPEG-7 standard has adopted a sound classification framework, in which dimension-reduced Audio Spectrum Projection (ASP) features are used to train continuous hidden Markov models (HMMs) for classification of various sounds. The MPEG-7 employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for the dimensional reduction. Other well-established techniques include Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT). In this paper we compare the performance of different dimensional reduction methods with Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) and HMMs in the classifying video sound clips.

  • For pattern recognition on high-dimensional data, such as images, the dimensionality reduction as a preprocessing is effective. By dimensionality reduction, we can (1) reduce storage capacity or amount of calculation, and (2) avoid "the curse of dimensionality" and improve classification performance. Popular tools for dimensionality reduction are Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) recently. Among them, only LDA takes the class labels into consideration. Nevertheless, it, has been reported that, the classification performance with ICA is better than that with LDA because LDA has restriction on the number of dimensions after reduction. To overcome this dilemma, we propose a new dimensionality reduction technique based on an information theoretic measure for difference of distribution. It takes the class labels into consideration and still it does not, have restriction on number of dimensions after reduction. Improvement of classification performance has been confirmed experimentally.

  • In mobile healthcare device, when to measure the heart rate by using the PPG signal, its performance is reduced according to the motion artifacts that is the movement of user. This is because the frequency range of motion (0.01-10 Hz) and that of PPG signals overlap. Also, the motion artifacts cannot be rectified by general filters. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a method using filter banks and independent component analysis (ICA). To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we were artificially applied various movements and compared heart rate errors of the moving average filter and ICA. In the experimental results, heart rate error of the proposed method showed very low than moving average filter and ICA. In this way, it is possible to measure stable heart rate if the proposed method is applied to the healthcare terminal design.

  • In frequency domain ICA, the frequency bin permutation problem falls off the quality of separated signals. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to solve the frequency bin permutation problem using the covariance of power ratio of separated signals in multi-channel FD-ICA. It makes use of the continuity of the spectrum of speech signals to check if frequency bin permutation occurs in the separated signal using the power ratio of adjacent frequency bins. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method could fix the frequency bin permutation problem in the multi-channel FD-ICA.

  • This paper presents an efficient input variable selection method using both fixed-point independent component analysis(FP-ICA) and adaptive partition mutual information(AP-MI) estimation. FP-ICA which is based on secant method, is applied to quickly find the independence between input variables. AP-MI estimation is also applied to estimate an accurate dependence information by equally partitioning the samples of input variable for calculating the probability density function(PDF). The proposed method has been applied to 2 problems for selecting the input variables, which are the 7 artificial signals of 500 samples and the 24 environmental pollution signals of 55 samples, respectively The experimental results show that the proposed methods has a fast and accurate selection performance. The proposed method has also respectively better performance than AP-MI estimation without the FP-ICA and regular partition MI estimation.

  • This paper presents a human motion recognition method using both centroid shift and local basis images. The centroid shift based on 1st moment balance technique is applied to get the robust motion images against position or size changes, the extraction of local basis images based on independent component analysis(ICA) is also applied to find a set of statistically independent motion features, which is included in each motions. Especially, ICA of fixed-point(FP) algorithm based on Newton method is used for being quick to extract a local basis images of motions. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 160(1 person * 10 animals * 16 motions) sign language motion images of 240*215 pixels. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances(speed, rate) than the method using local eigen images and the method using local basis images without centroid shift respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for removing noise components in the feature extraction process for robust speech recognition. This method is based on blind separation using independent component analysis (ICA). Given two noisy speech recordings the algorithm linearly separates speech from the unwanted noise signal. To apply ICA as closely as possible to the feature level for recognition, a new spectral analysis is presented. It modifies the computation of band energies by previously averaging out fast Fourier transform (FFT) points in several divided ranges within one met-scaled band. The simple analysis using sample variances of band energies of speech and noise, and recognition experiments showed its noise robustness. For noisy speech signals recorded in real environments, the proposed method which applies ICA to the new spectral analysis improved the recognition performances to a considerable extent, and was particularly effective for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). This method gives some insights into applying ICA to feature levels and appears useful for robust speech recognition.
