  • This study was conducted in a long-term experimental forest in the central hardwoods region of southwestern Michigan to retrospectively examine the role of past forest management practices and climate on red oak (Quercus rubra L.) productivity. Initially, in 1971, plots within the experimental forest were treated separately with a clearcut and shelterwood regeneration harvest in an attempt to increase red oak regeneration. From 1987-1989, a new study was initiated within a portion of the clearcut and shelterwood plots to evaluate the effectiveness of additional oak crop tree release using mechanical and chemical applications. Cumulative diameter and mortality rates of 719 red oaks were monitored across the four silvicultural treatments: Clearcut-A (clearcut without additional release treatment), Clearcut-B (clearcut with additional release treatment), Shelterwood-A (shelterwood without additional release), and Shelterwood-B (shelterwood with additional release) plus an untreated control. Increment cores were obtained from red oak trees and neighboring competitor species. Tree-ring analyses (dendrochronology) were applied to examine the effect of these silvicultural treatments and climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) on red oak productivity. The results indicated that crop tree release following a clearcut or shelterwood harvest reduced mortality rates and thus increased survival of red oak. Red oak in control plots or plots only receiving the initial regeneration harvesting treatment and no additional competition release were negatively affected by climatic stress, which included summer moisture stress. In contrast, red oak in plots that received the competition release treatment from shade tolerant tree species not only had higher tree level productivity (i.e., tree basal area) and lower mortality rates, but were also relatively more resilient to climatic stress by showing limited or no associations between climate and growth.

  • In this paper, equivalent circuit model and novel model parameter extraction method of a silicon(Si) substrate are presented. Substrate coupling through Si-substrate is quantitatively investigated by analyzing equivalent circuit with operating frequency and characteristic frequencies (i.e., pole and zero frequency) of a system. For the experimental verification of the equivalent circuit and parameter extraction method, test patterns are designed and fabricated in standard CMOS technology with various isolation distances, substrate resistivity, and guard-ring structures. Then, these are measured in l00MHz-20GHz frequency range by using vector network analyzer. It is shown that the equivalent-circuit-based HSPICE simulation results using extracted parameters have excellent agreement with the experimental results. Thus, the proposed equivalent circuit and parameter extraction methodology can be usefully employed in mixed-signal circuit design and verification of a circuit performance.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the crack of coated Nitrocellulose Lacquer on flatand edge-grained boards of Quercus acutissima, ring-porous wood, and Betula platyphylla var. japonica, diffuse-porous wood, by variations of moisture contents at 7, 13 and 21%. Cold check system was used as an accelerating method for crack development, in which one cycle of the system consisted of 10 replications of each unit cycle, $60^{\circ}C$ for 4hr followdd by $-20^{\circ}C$ for 4hr. The analysis of Nitrocellulose Lacquer characteristics was made by means of water permeation measurement, F.T.I.R. spectroscopy, N.M.R. spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, gas chromatography, and D.S.C. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The number of cracks increased with the increasing moisture content of board. 2. The crack of coated film on flat-grained board was fewer in number than on edge-grained board. 3. The crack occurred in Quercus acutissima was more numerous on edge-grained board but less frequent on flat-grained board compared with that in Betula platyphylla var. japonica, respectively. 4. The cold crack vertically developed to the grain both in Quercus acutissima and Betula platyphylla var. japonica. 5. Water permeability in intermediate coated film was lower than in under and top coated film, but the difference was not confirmed between under and top coated film.

  • A fluxgate magnetic sensor consists of a solenoid excitation coil, pick-up coil, and magnetic core. We presents the effect of magnetic core shape in a micromachined fluxgate sensor. To observe the performance of fluxgate sensor with magnetic core side width and gap, side width of 125 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were designed in a rectangular-ring shaped core and the gaps of 0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were also fabricated in a racetrack shaped core. The solenoid coils and magnetic core were separated by benzocyclobutane(BCB) which had high insulation and good planarization characters. Copper coil patterns of 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width and 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were electroplated on Ti(300 $\AA$) / Cu(1500 $\AA$) seed layers. 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick N $i_{0.8}$F $e_{0.2.}$(permalloy) film for the magnetic core was also electroplated under 2000 gauss to induce the magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic core had the high DC effective permeability of ∼1,300 and coercive field of ∼0.1 Oe. Because the magnetic cores of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ side width and 0 gap had a low magnetic flux leakage, high sensitivity of ∼350 V/T were measured at excitation condition of 3 $V_{P-P}$ and 2 MHz square wave. The power consumption of ∼14 ㎽ was measured. The fabricated fluxgate sensor had the very small actual size of 3.0${\times}$1.7 $\textrm{mm}^2$. When two fluxgates were perpendicularly aligned in terrestrial field, their two-axis output signals were very useful to commercialize an electronic azimuth compass for the portable navigation system.m.m.m.

  • Respiratory pathogenic effects of several porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus(PRRSV) isolates were examined in swine tracheal ring(STR) cultures by examining their effect on ciliary activity. One high and one low pathogenic PRRSV isolates were then selected and their pathogenicity investigated in 3-week-old conventional PRRSV-seronegative pigs. Ten pigs each were inoculated intranasally with the high or low pathogenic PRRSV isolate and 6 pigs were sham inoculated as negative controls. Two pigs each from the inoculated group and one pig each from negative control group were killed on 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days postinoculation(pI). At necropsy, degrees of gross lung lesion was determined. Turbinate, tonsil, trachea and lung samples were collected for virus isolation or histopathology. Gross lung lesions were observed mainly on 14 days PI with high and low pathogenic isolates inducing moderate diffuse and mild gross lung lesions, respectively. Inoculation of either the high or low pathogenic virus resulted in loss of cilia in ciliated epithelium of turbinates and trachea between 7 and 28 days PI. High pathogenic virus caused increased number of Goblet cells in the tracheal epithelial layer between 4 and 21 days PI whereas the low pathogenic virus did it between 14 and 28 days PI and with a lesser degree. Although both viruses produced interstitial pneumonia, the lesion was less severe with the low pathogenic virus. The isolation of high pathogenic virus from tissues and sera was earlier and more consistent than that of the low pathogenic virus. The agreement between in vitro and in vivo tests indicates that STR cultures may be used as a routine method to determine the respiratory pathogenicity of PRRSV isolates.

  • The polyene antifungal antibiotics, mostly produced by Gram-positive soil actinomycetes, are a family of type I polyketide macrolide ring compounds with 20$\sim$40 carbon backbone contain 3$\sim$8 conjugated double bonds. Using polyene-specific genomic screening strategy, we previously isolated three novel polyene-producing actinomycetes strains from soil, implying the potential application of these strains' spores as microbial pesticides. Here, we report that the sonication is a very efficient method for actinomycetes spore generation with a sonicator power-dependent manner. In addition, these sonication-driven actinomycetes spores retained significant portion of their cell viabilities as well as antifungal activities after freeze-drying procedure, implying the potential application of these strains' spores as microbial pesticides.

  • The structural relationship of 16 asiatic acid (AA) derivatives, including AA and asiaticoside (AS) to cytotoxicity and anti-hepatofibrotic activity in HSC-T6 cells, were investigated. Cytotoxicities of AA derivatives varied from 5.5 $\mu$M to over 2000 $\mu$M of $IC_{50}$/ depending on AA functional group modifications. Substituting the hydroxyl group at the C(2) to N≡C and substituting bulky groups for dihydroxyl groups at (3), (23) of the A-ring increased the cytotoxicity, but keto group at C(11) and benzoyl ester at C(2) were greatly reduced it. Modification of the carboxylic acid group at C28 also reduced the cytotoxicity. The collagen synthesis determined by hydroxyproline content in the cells was inhibited from a maximum of 48% (Zlx-i-85 and 87) to 15% (AS) by AA derivatives. The anti-hepatofibrotic effect of these compounds might be due to the reduced expression of prolyl 4-hydroxylase $\alpha$ and $\beta$ subunits and TIMP2. However, the inhibition of collagen by asiaticoside derivatives did not show any structural-activity relationship.

  • Reactions between potassium fluoride with organic halogen-containing carboxylic acids in dimethyl formamide solvent gave a decarboxylation reaction for the case of fluoro carboxylic acids of the type of $CF_3\;COOH,\;C_3F_7COOH,\;and\;C_2F_5COOH,$ whereas an additional partial fluorination together with dimerization reaction occurred for the chlorine containing acids of the type of $CH_2ClCOOH,\;CH_3CHClCOOH, \;CHCl_2COOH\;and\;o-Cl-C_6H_4-COOH.$ The phenyl halides showed no reactivity, but the halides with two electron attracting substituents on the benzene ring gave mainly dimerization reaction. The esters and alcohols gave an usual fluorination reaction. The same reactions in absence of the solvent at the elevated temperature increase the yield of the dimerized product and gave the cyclized product, fluorenone, in case of ο-chlorobenzoic acid. It was found that the fluorination usually precede the decarboxylation reaction by checking the stiochemical sequence of reaction. Catalytic influence of potassium fluoride were discussed and the mechanism of the reaction was considered.

  • To date many kinds of compounds have been obtained from plants kingdom as antineoplastic and anti-cancerous agents. However, there is no special type of compounds for ncancer therapy. Various types of substances are effective for various types of cancers and tumors: for instance, alkaloids, lignans, terpenes and steroids etc. Curcumol obtained from Curcuma aromatica was tested and noticed to be effective against cancer of the uterine cervix clinically Oridonin isolated from Rabdosia ssp.is now investigated for clinical trials in China. Moreover, camptothecine isolated from Camptotheca acuminata is also antineoplastic alkaloid, but is very toxic. Chemical modification has been tried to decrease its toxicity. This compound is now using as clinical agent. Harringtonin was investigated as an anticancerous drug in China. Taxol, a compound with a taxane ring isolated from the bark of Taxus brevifolia, has been demonstrated to have substantial anticancer activity in patients with solid tumors refractory standard chemotherapy. Supply of this drug has severely limited full exploration of its antineoplastic potential. Some efforts are continued in National Cancer Institute NCI) Washington for surveying various Taxus species for optimal taxol content, improvement in semi-synthesis from baccatin III, improvement in method of extraction, and development of alternative renewable resources. Further, there are many compounds which have been reported as antineoplastic agents. On the other hand, we have screened on higher plants collected in Japan, China, Korea, Southeast Asia and South America for antineoplastic activity, which has been done using Sarcoma 180 ascites in mice, P388 Iymphocytic leukemia in mice, Chinese hamster lung V-79 cells, P388 cells and nasopharynx carcinoma (KB) cells in our laboratory, as primary screening. In this meeting, I will present on antitumor and cytotoxic substances of the higher plants (Rubia cordifolia, Ailanfhus Vilmoriniana, Aster tataricus, Taxus cuspidata var. nana, Cephalotaxus harringtonia var drupacea, etc.) selected from above screening tests.
