  • The purpose of this experiment was to check the effects on metal corrosion of the 6 types of tree (Ash tree, Japanese cedar, black walnut, western hemlock, paulownia coreana and maple) which are currently being used, or the use of which is under study, by the Museum. As a method of test, an Oddy Test was conducted where the materials to be tested and the metal test piece are exposed to a specified temperature and humidity for a long period of time and the effects of materials on the test piece are observed. The results of the Oddy Test conducted on all 6 types of tree showed slight difference in the form of metal corrosion, and except for the blank, corrosion occurred on the entire surface of most iron (Fe) and lead (Pb) test pieces. Minor level of discoloration was noted in all test pieces of copper (Cu) even though different levels.

  • Cyber Mission Impact Assessment is one of the essential tasks which many militaries and industrial major companies should perform to effectively achieve their mission. The unexpected damage to an organization's assets results in damage to the whole system's performance of the organizations. In order to minimize the damage, it is necessary to quantify the available capacity of the mission, which can be achieved only with the remaining assets, and to immediately prepare a new second best plan in a moment. We therefore need to estimate the exact cyber attack's impact to the mission when the unwanted damage occurs by modeling the relationship between the assets and the missions. In this paper, we propose a new model which deals with the dependencies between assets and missions for obtaining the exact impact of a cyber attack. The proposed model distinguishes task management from asset management for an efficient process, and it is implemented to be optimized using a vectorized operation for parallel processing and using a buffer to reduce the computation time.

  • This study was designed to help develop an optimized sizing system for the military winter jackets of Korean males. First, we conducted a survey on the supply rate of military winter jackets and the wearing of suitable size jackets in order to identify problems in the current sizing system. We next developed a new sizing system generation method to satisfy the coverage rate and appropriate size number: Hybrid of Grid with Optimization. The findings of this study were: 1. The survey indicated that a 90 (chest girth) size is necessary; in addition, a one-step large size jacket fit well as a right size jacket. 2. We developed three optimized sizing systems for Korean male military winter jackets using the Hybrid of Grid with an optimization method and suggested one of them as a final new sizing system. The new sizing system consisted of two primary dimension: chest girth and stature. It has a 14 size number and its extended coverage rate is larger than the current sizing system and it has a 90 (chest girth) size. It also selected an optimized size for the area of low population density. The new sizing system is therefore considered very effective for Korean male soldiers military winter jackets.

  • Colloidal semiconductor CdSe-ZnS core-shell nanocrystal quantum dot (Qdot) are luminescent inorganic fluorophores that show potential to overcome some of the functional limitations encountered with organic dyes in fluorescence labeling applications. Salmonella Enteritidis has emerged as a major cause of human salmonellosis worldwide since the 1980s. A rapid, specific, and sensitive method for the detection of Salmonella Enteritidis was developed using Qdot as a fluorescence marker coupled with immunomagnetic separation. Magnetic beads coated with anti-Salmonella Enteritidis antibodies were employed to selectively capture the target bacteria, and biotin-conjugated anti-Salmonella antibodies were added to form sandwich immune complexes. After magnetic separation, the immune complexes were labeled with Qdot via biotin-streptavidin conjugation, and fluorescence measurement was carried out using a fluorescence measurement system. The detection limit of the Qdot method was a Salmonella Enteritidis concentration of $10^3$ colony-forming units (CFU)/mL, whereas the conventional fluorescein isothiocyanate-based method required over $10^5CFU/mL$. The total detection time was within 2 h. In addition to the potential for general nanotechnology development, these results suggest a new rapid detection method of various pathogenic bacteria from a complex food matrix.

  • Purpose: To identify factors influencing psychosocial adjustment in patients with surgical removal of benign breast tumor. Methods: With a survey design, data were collected using the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR), Body Image Scale, Physical Discomfort Scale, and Family Support Scale with patients who had had surgical removal of a benign breast tumor from September to November 2017. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean scores for physical discomfort, body image, family support, and psychosocial adjustment were $1.57{\pm}0.51$, $0.37{\pm}0.64$, $3.62{\pm}0.67$, and $4.00{\pm}0.45$, respectively. Family support, body image, physical discomfort, number of surgical removal of benign breast tumor (twice), and cancer insurance status (yes) were verified as factors influencing psychosocial adjustment. These factors accounted for 57.4% of psychosocial adjustment. Conclusion: In this study, family support, body image, and physical discomfort were identified as significant predictors of psychosocial adjustment. Therefore, this study can be used as fundamental data to develop nursing intervention strategies in order to increase psychosocial adjustment in patients with surgical removal of a benign breast tumor.

  • Korean district heating companies levy comprehensive construction fee on consumers in the beginning of construction period and the consumers' burden is much higher than those in any other network industries in Korea. It has also many problems such as inappropriate fee calculation method, cross subsidization, property right dispute, etc.. I show that the cut of construction fee by 30% and at the same time, the upward adjustment of tariff rates by 4~6% for 20 years on average will maintain current profitability based on the standard model simulation, I also suggest that fixed charge part of double tariff should be increased to 25% of total tariff and the cut of construction fee should be levied on fixed charge, directly to improve efficiency.

  • The tube formation assay is a widely used in vitro experiment model to evaluate angiogenic properties by measuring the formation of tubular structures from vascular endothelial cells (ECs). In vitro experimental results are crucial when considered the advisability of moving forward to in vivo studies. Thus, the additional attentions to the in vitro assay is necessary to improve the quality of the pre-clinical data, leading to better decision-making for successful drug discovery. In this study, we improved the tube formation assay system in three aspects. First, we used human endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs), which are endothelial precursors that have a robust proliferative capacity and more defined angiogenic characteristics compared to mature ECs. Second, we utilized a real-time cell recorder to track the progression of tube formation for 48 hours. Third, to minimize analysis error due to the limited observation area, we used image-stitching software to increase the microscope field of view to a $2{\times}2$ stitched area from the $4{\times}$ object lens. Our advanced tube formation assay system successfully demonstrated the time-dependent dynamic progression of tube formation in the presence and absence of VEGF and FGF-2. Vatalanib, VEGF inhibitor, was tested by our assay system. Of note, $IC_{50}$ values of vatalanib was different at each observation time point. Collectively, these results indicate that our advanced tube formation assay system replicates the dynamic progression of tube formation in response to angiogenic modulators. Therefore, this new system provides a sensitive and versatile assay model for evaluating pro- or anti-angiogenic drugs.

  • A through diaphragm is often used to ensure their stiffness for moment-resisting connections using rectangular steel-tube column and H-shaped beam. The through-diaphragm connections, however, have some difficulties for their applicabilities to the field due to the complexity of the fabrication and construction processes. This study thus proposes a new modular system of steel structures assembled only using bolts without welding, by bringing a connection module composed of rectangular steel-tube column, H-shaped beam and oneway bolt onto the site. An experimental study to evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed connection details based on the new modular system is then conducted. The length and type of the inner reinforcement plate are considered as the primary design parameters, and the strength, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capability of the new connections are experimentally analyzed by comparison to those of conventional through diaphragm connections.

  • Purpose: Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of patients visiting the emergency department (ED). Abdominal pain is caused by a variety of causes, so it is difficult for a triage nurse to determine the urgency of a patient, but it is still a must. The purpose of this study was to identify the related factors to the urgent diseases of patients with abdominal pain visiting ED. Methods: This study was a retrospective descriptive study. The study setting was an ED in a tertiary hospital in Korea. Data were collected from September 1, 2017 to October 15, 2017. During the study period, of a total of 6,181 patients visiting the ED, 731 complained of abdominal pain. Patients with obvious cause of pain and patients who could not express detailed symptoms were excluded. The 573 patients were included in the final analysis. We collected demographics, clinical characteristics, and final diagnosis. We divided final diagnoses into urgent diseases which were more likely to be life-threatening without treatment and non-urgent diseases. We identified the related factors to the urgent diseases of patients with abdominal pain using the logistic regression. Results: 173 (30.2%) patients had urgent diseases. Age (OR=1.02, 95% CI=1.00~1.03), referral from other clinics (OR=2.92, 95% CI=1.86~4.60), ambulance utilization (OR=2.00, 95% CI=1.27~3.15), diarrhea (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.25~0.76), and tachycardia (OR=2.27, 95% CI=1.44~3.58) were related to urgent diseases. Conclusion: Triage nurse should take into account the patient's age, mode of visiting, and route of visiting ED; and check the symptom of tachycardia or diarrhea.

  • This study focused on the problem behavior after drinking, and examined the effects of temperament of adult drinker on offensive behavior and analyzed the sequential mediating effects of aggression and drinking behavior. To this purpose, 299 subjects were assessed through the Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI)-for adults, Korean Aggression Questionnaire, and Korean Alcohol Use Disorder diagnosis. As the results, 'Novelty seeking' had the highest level of explanation for aggression. In the relationship between 'Novelty seeking' and offensive behavior, mediating effect of aggression and drinking behavior were significant. In its course, sequential mediating effect of both was shown as complete mediation. This result implies that the aggression and drinking behavior were the factors of connecting 'Novelty seeking' and offensive behavior, and the characteristic of 'Novelty seeking' does not have direct influence on offensive behavior but only through aggression and offensive behavior that it has such effect.
