Endothermic fuel utilizing technology is considered as a unique practical method of hypersonic vehicle for long distance flight. Research activities about characteristics of fuel injection and combustion using cracked by endothermic reaction are reviewed. Studies on characterization of supercritical fuel injection and mixing within supersonic flow field are surveyed. Researches on combustion characteristics such as ignition delay time, laminar burning velocity and combustion efficiency at supersonic model combustor are reviewed. In addition, domestic research activities on endothermic fuel are surveyed.

The PID controller with fin angle and thrust as control input was designed based on the aerodynamic data of scramjet system. Flight simulation following a given trajectory which strike the target point after climb and cruise with constant dynamic pressure was conducted. After that, the required thrust for the climb and cruise was calculated and the required fuel flow rate for the hydrogen fuel dual mode scramjet combustor was analyzed. The combustor analysis of this study which conducted on integrated model of independently developed inlet, combustor, nozzles and external aerodynamic models, laying the foundation for the integrated design of the air breathing hypersonic system.

Shock tunnels are known to be capable of simulating flow-field environments of supersonic and hypersonic flights. They have been operated successfully world-wide for almost half a century. As a consequence of the strong interest in hypersonic vehicles in Korea, attention has been given on this type of facility and so an intermediate-sized shock tunnel has lately been built at KAIST. In the light of this, this paper presents our tunnel performance and some of the model scramjet test data. The freestream flow used in this work replicates a supersonic combustor environment for a Mach 5.7 flight speed.

The aerothermodynamic characteristics of SCRamjet engine for the airbreathing populsion system of the next generation flight vehicle are described. As the flow is passing by, combustion caused the total pressure loss and the Mach number decrease, but nozzle exit velocity is large enough to produce net thrust. To simulate supersonic combustion test, preliminary design of ground-based blowdown type supersonic combustion tunnel is attained. Minimum allowable operating pressure and mass flow rate are calculated for the design Mach number of 2.5 at the test section of a supersonic combustion tunnel.
This study presents a prediction methodology of thermodynamic properties by using RK-PR Equation of State in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions including both sub-critical and super-critical regions, in order to obtain thermophysical properties for hydrocarbon aviation fuels and their products resulting from endothermic reactions. The density and the constant pressure specific heat are predicted in the temperature range from 300 to 1000 K and the pressure from 0.1 to 5.0 MPa, which includes all of the liquid and gas phases and the super-critical region of three representative hydrocarbon fuels, and then compared with those data obtained from the NIST database. Results show that the averaged relative deviations of both predicted density and constant pressure specific heat are below 5% in the specified temperature and pressure conditions, and the major sources of the errors are observed near the saturation line and the critical point of each fuel.

Flush Air Data Sensing system (FADS) estimates air data states using pressure data measured at the surface of flight vehicles. The FADS system does not require intrusive probes, so it is suitable for high performance aircrafts, stealth vehicles, and hypersonic flight vehicles. In this study, calibration procedures and solution algorithms of the FADS for a sphere-cone shape vehicle are presented for the prediction of air data from subsonic to supersonic flights. Five flush pressure ports are arranged on the surface of nose section in order to measure surface pressure data. The algorithm selects the concept of separation for the prediction of flow angles and the prediction of pressure related variables, and it uses the pressure model which combines the potential flow solution for a subsonic flow with the modified Newtonian flow theory for a hypersonic flow. The CFD code which solves Euler equations is developed and used for the construction of calibration pressure data in the Mach number range of 0.5~3.0. Tests are conducted with various flight conditions for flight Mach numbers in the range of 0.6~3.0 and flow angles in the range of -10°~+10°. Air data such as angle of attack, angle of sideslip, Mach number, and freestream static pressure are predicted and their accuracies are analyzed by comparing predicted data with reference data.

The laminar burning velocity of endothermic fuel surrogates is measured in this study, in order to investigate combustion characteristics of aviation fuel after being used as coolant in an active cooling system of a hypersonic flight vehicle. A Bunsen burner was manufactured such that the laminar burning velocity can be taken for two types of surrogate fuels, SF-1 and 2. The results showed that the burning velocity of surrogate fuels was faster at high equivalence ratio conditions than that of the reference fuel (RF), and specifically, the velocity of SF-1 had the maximum value at the highest equivalence ratio compared with those of SF-2 and RF.
This study presents a prediction methodology of transport properties using the methane-based TRAPP (m-TRAPP) method in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions including both subcritical and supercritical regions, in order to obtain thermo-physical properties for hydrocarbon aviation fuels and their products resulting from endothermic reactions. The viscosity and thermal conductivity are predicted in the temperature range from 300 to 1000 K and the pressure from 0.1 to 5.0 MPa, which includes all of the liquid, gas, and the supercitical regions of representative hydrocarbon fuels. The predicted values are compared with those data obtained from the NIST database. It was demonstrated that the m-TRAPP method can give reasonable predictions of both viscosity and thermal conductivity in the wide range of temperature and pressure conditions studied in this paper. However, there still exists large discrepancy between the current data and established values by NIST, especially for the liquid phase. Compared to the thermal conductivity predictions, the calculated viscosities are in better agreement with the NIST database. In order to consider a wide range of conditions, it is suggested to select an appropriate method through further comparison with another improved prediction methodologies of transport properties.
This study presents a numerical simulation investigating hydrodynamic characteristics of high-temperature hydrocarbon aviation fuel injected through a plain orifice injector. The analysis encompassed the temperature range up to the critical point, and the obtained results were compared with prior experimental observations. The analysis unveiled that the injector's exit pressure remains equivalent to the ambient pressure when the fuel injection temperature is below the boiling point. However, when the fuel temperature surpasses the boiling point, the exit pressure of the injector transitions to the saturated vapor pressure corresponding to the fuel injection temperature. Consequently, the exit pressure of the injector increases in tandem with the rapid increase of the saturation vapor pressure due to escalating fuel temperatures. This rise in the exit pressure necessitates a proportional increase in fuel injection pressure to ensure a fixed fuel mass flow rate. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the discharge coefficient obtained by applying the exit pressure instead of the ambient pressure did exhibit no decrease, but rather was maintained at a nearly constant value, comparable to its level below the boiling point.
In a hypersonic vehicle to solve the heat problem generated during flight, a cooling technology is being developed which uses the endothermic effect that appears during the decomposition reaction of the mounted fuel. In this study, the decomposition reaction of n-dodecane fuel was performed using HZSM-5 as a catalyst, and the catalyst was coated on metal foam to maximize the endothermic effect of the catalytic decomposition reaction and suppress coke formation. The reactor was a stainless steel flow reactor with a outer diameter of 1.27 cm, and the reaction temperature was 550 ℃, the reaction pressure was 4 MPa, and the flow rate was 12 ml per minute. As a result of the catalytic decomposition reaction using a catalyst coated with HZSM-5 on the metal foam, the heat sink was 2887 kJ/kg as a maximum, the gas phase conversion rate was 34%, and the amount of coke produced on the metal foam decreased by about 56% as the catalyst was coated compared to the uncoated catalyst.
